...Although Christmas and Thanksgiving are both holidays, they both have many similarities and differences. Around Thanksgiving and Christmas, most families remain so busy that their memories of these two holidays tend to blend together. These two holidays are so similar, but yet so different at the same time, both Thanksgiving and Christmas are time of giving thanks, merriments, gift exchange and family reunion but the clear differences are there purposes are not the same. It is a time where family comes together that haven’t been around the whole year. Christmas differs from Thanksgiving in food, decorations, and family tradition. During Christmas, there is a lot of running around to do. Usually, weeks before Christmas, families get together and go out and buy Christmas gifts. They also go out and buy Christmas trees, decorations, wrapping paper, and food that is going to be cooked the night before Christmas. Days before Christmas, the families gets the gift and wrap them to put under the Christmas tree. When decorating the Christmas tree you usually put your lights on which are usually red and green. ...Black and white; happy and sad. These are both opposites of each other. However, there are also similarities between each other. Black and white may be considered completely different, but the resemblance between them is that they are still colors. Happy and sad are perceived as opposites, but the similarity they share is that they are both emotions. This whole concept applies directly to the Christian religions Catholics and Baptists. They are both similar, yet they are both different. Catholics believe that the bishops are the ones that come after Jesus’ apostles, and fill their shoes. St. Peter’s ‘descendent’ is the Pope. The Virgin Mary is extremely important in Catholicism. They believe that she was: Immaculate in her conception, a most perfect virgin in her divine motherhood, the noble associate of the divine Redeemer who has won a complete triumph over sin and its consequences, finally obtained, as the supreme culmination of her privileges, that she should be preserved free from the corruption of the tomb and that, like her own Son, having overcome death, she might be taken up body and soul to the glory of heaven where, as Queen, she sits in splendor at the right hand of her Son, the immortal King of the Ages. (“Munificentissimus Deus”) The Catholic religion is growing. Francis X. Rocca, a reporter on Religion News Services for USA Today, wrote in her article, “The number of Catholics in the world edged up 1% in 2009, the Vatican says, bringing to 1.18 billion...

...Running head: The difference in our culture The difference in a white and black culture Billy Dixon South University Online As a child growing up and into my adulthood, I have had the privilege of living in different places. I have lived in several major cities throughout the U.S. and have made friends from different countries, which are Africans, Mexicans, and Canadians. I moved from Georgia when I was nine, and I have lived in the rural of Texas since. Therefore in the past twenty-one years of my life I have had the pleasure of living in two different cultural backgrounds, and learn the differences in between. ...get so used to being in one culture that you start to forget about your family’s origin. Guatemala and the United States are two different countries with different cultures: their people eat different foods, dress differently, and speak different languages. Guatemala has a national dish that is tamale. A tamale is made of a corn masa that is flavored with a Spanish seasoning called achiote and stuffed with tomato recado, which is a flavorful thick sauce, roasted red bell pepper strips, and chicken, beef, or pork. They cook tamales most likely when they are celebrating a holiday, such as Thanksgiving. Guatemalan people also cook many other side dishes to accompany their main entrée; the side dishes are black beans, white rice, and corn tortillas. On the other hand, the United States have foods that are the total opposite of Guatemalan foods. The American people usually cook turkey for Thanksgiving; they also eat hamburgers, hot dogs, doughnuts, pumpkin pie, and apple pie. Sagastume 2 As time passed, many things changed and were lost in cultures; for example, the way Americans and Guatemalans dress now, Guatemalans are dressing similar to how Americans dress. Now, Guatemalans wear Jean pants and see through clothes such as; leggings, shirts, skirts, etc. Instead of wearing their traditional clothes. Traditionally, Guatemalan people hand made their clothes and added bright, bold colors like red, blue, yellow, and pink. These colors are found on all types of dresses, skirts...

...Relationship between Religion and International Trade Hilal AKINCI, Yeditepe University, İstanbul 2014 The main aim of this paper is to show whether or not religion has impacts on international trade and how it does happen. To do so, researches about the topic will be covered and some worldwide statistics are gathered together. Empirical Studies There are few empirical studies about impacts of religion on international trade or its relationship with international trade. In shared research of Emilia Justyna Powell, University Alabama, and Stephanie J. Rickard, London School of Economics, impacts of Islamic law on international trade is examined. Two models which are monadic and dyadic techniques are used in this study. The main purpose of them to demonstrate whether or not countries governed by Islamic law are effected regarding their international trade although they believe that “the importance of countries’ legal systems for trade has declined over time, possibly due to the increased role of international arbitration bodies and/or the standardization of international sales contracts (Powell & and Rickard, 2010). This research is important as being the first direct test of the effect of Islamic law on countries’ trade relations. The researched draws our attention to the situation that trade can be conceptualized as the aggregate flow of goods and services between countries but in fact that flows are a series of contracts between buyer and seller countries. Enforcement...

...There were too many people in England, and the economic growth could not keep up with the population demands. Anti-Catholocism and the lure of wealth through trade were some of the motivating factors for colonization. Although there are similarities, I see more differences between the colonies. Both the Pilgrims and the three ships sponsored by Virginia company were heading toward Virginia. The settlers from the Virginia Company wanted to move inland on the James River to protect themselves from Spanish warships. The Pilgrims in contrast, ended up off course and ended up in Massachusetts. Most of the settlers arriving in Massachusetts were families thus their population grew more rapidly than those settled in Jamestown who were all...

...Who am I? Currently as senior in college I am still figuring out how my culture has shaped the person I am today. I know that I am a young Puerto Rican girl earning a degree in a field dominated by males. Culture to me is simply a group of people that obtain certain beliefs and behaviors over an allotted amount of time because they live, learn, and grow together. Culture defines who we are and who we will become. At first glance people assume I am of Caucasian decent. While this is partially true, I am half Puerto Rican. Individuals that do not know me looked confused when I say my last name. Consequently, people often assume I am Mexican when they hear my last name. There is a stigma that any Spanish sounding name in Mexican. This is a lack...

...every Sunday. After church on Sundays we have a nice, huge sit down dinner. We pray before every meal together. My parents are originally from New York, and they have brought their traditions from New York to California. They grew up with a lot of Jewish friends and so they carry on some Jewish traditions even though we are Christians. We play the Dreidel game and eat Jewish food. My family eats fish every Christmas Eve to carry on my father’s tradition in his Italian family back in New York. Also on Christmas Eve my family reads the story in the New Testament of Jesus Christ’s birth, and then we each open one present. We celebrate all American holidays like Valentine’s Day, Easter (the fun egg search and the Christian story), Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas (Santa Claus and the birth of Jesus). My culture is my way of life and the reason I am the way I am. Now if I imagined I had an identical...

Although there are many similarities and some differences this could still take away from the Movie if you watched it first instead of reading the book. Laurie Halse Anderson In the movie I think there are a lot of things that could have been compared and contrasted. In the Movie there was not a no mirror scene or no prom scene. In the book Andy does not stand up for Melinda in the movie he does. In the movie Andy is not Portrayed as a monster or at least to the extent of the book deceptions. In the book she gets raped under a tree, but in the movie she gets raped in Andy’s jeep. In the book it seems like her parents and her never...

...Indentured Servants were basically men, women, homeless, prisoner, kidnapped or orphaned kids. These people wouldn’t work for money but in return, their master would have to shelter, feed, clothe. They would be free after about 4-8 years. They have a chance of obtaining land or other valuable items. Slaves, on the other hand, were from Africa. They were caught and sold by slave traders. Like animals, they were shipped around to colonies so they could work their butts off. The Masters had no power to change the status of the slave. They didn’t know English and were also most likely born into slavery. Some similarities were that they were both bought by their masters and had listened to their masters. They usually had died from serving their master and did lots of hard work. Families could be separated and if one ran away, they could be punished by being whipped or branded which was pretty officious of the masters. They never really got enough of anything. They did not have good clothes like people that were slaves did. They were also both transported far away from their...

...Alyandry vielma Islam and Christianity Many say that Islam and Christianity are similar, by making the assumption that they worship the same God. These two religions may have similar things, but it does not mean that because some beliefs might be similar that they are the same. Islam and Christianity differ in many areas like, their source of authority, the nature of God, and their essential practices. There are many areas in which they differ, but the ones mentioned are the basic structure of each religion. Since they are more different then they are similar, this would be the best way of knowing their differences. There are many things by which authority is needed. We also are subject to authority in all things. Christianity and Islam are more different then similar in the source of authority. In Christianity, the founder is Jesus, human and divine. Christianity follows the bible, which is the collection of sacred writings of the religion and includes the Old and New Testament. Under Christianity there are the Catholics and the Eastern Orthodox Christianity. Catholics follow the pope, which differs from the Eastern Orthodox as mentioned in The Council of Constantinople “And in the Spirit, the holy, the lordly and life-giving one, proceeding forth from the father, the one who spoke through the prophets.” On the other hand the Eastern Orthodox follows Christ, and does not accept of what the Council of Constantinople states, saying in the 3rd Council of Toledo, “Directs...

...Supply and Demand Simulation To identifywhich portions of the microeconomicsand macroeconomics principles are which in this simulationwe have to understand the difference between the two economical concepts first. Microeconomics is the study of the goods and services of the world and how they are affected by ways of the world. For example gas prices go up during the summer time for a reason other than oil companies wanting to make record high profits. The gas prices go up during the summer because we tend to travel more in the summer than we do during the winter. Families go on vacation more the weather is nicer nationwide, therefore the amount of outside events has increased drawing us out of the house and on the roads. Macroeconomics is the study of the economy as a whole. This concept takes into account the effect that unemployment is having on the housing market, how does the increase or decrease of taxes effect the spending habits of people, and the most recent favorite of us as Americans, how nationalized healthcare will increase or decrease the amount of small businesses in the near future. Now that we fully understand the differences between micro and macroeconomics it will make is easier for me to tell you which two concepts in the simulation were micro and which two were macro. One of the first concepts that we learn about in the simulation is the concept of supply and demand and what effect it has on the rate of rental of the apartments. Learning that we have...

...Introduction Culture is not static, rather changeable or dynamic, depending on times, people influences etcetera, I would agree with Edward Burnett Tylor that traditions and/or customs are a part of the culture, not necessarily what should be defining the culture (Sir Edward Burnett Tylor, 2004) therefore it would perhaps more correct to look at the countries unique customs. In this essay I shall analyze what is considered to be the Swedish culture as clearer defined under Identifying and Explaining my Roots culture and get more in depth of the differences or even possible similarities of each nation, Sweden and Canada. I shall also try to show as to why internationally Swedes is associated with brand names such as IKEA and VOLVO and why it is that these household names are a part of the Swedish culture Throughout the analyze I shall get insight if there are any Swedish holidays I would like to see implemented in Canada, and/or is there any Canadian holidays I felt that I missed throughout my years in Sweden? Is there any group or maybe a special gathering for Swedish immigrants in Toronto? How has the years in Sweden affected my possibility to adapt in Canada? Am I required to assimilate by means of giving up my Swedish identity and culture in order to fit in? What is the lifestyle of, and how are people from Sweden adapting in Canada? What are the stereotypes Swedish people have of Canadians and vice versa, and is it founded? Is it necessary to assimilate or can one live...

...Everyday thousands of Americans simply don't have enough food to feed their family and their children. Most turn to government assistance, such as WIC and food stamps for support. However, not all needy families qualify and some may not receive enough food stamps. In that case, they turn to local food pantries for help with food. The donations they receive can truly make a difference. Out of the realm of typical behavior, I recently donated two turkeys to Our Daily Bread Food Pantry to be distributed to their client families for their own Thanksgiving celebrations. The volunteers were overwhelmed with the support received during this time when the economy is weak. They were tremendously grateful for the local generosity and asked that I "please keep giving." I'm a firm believer in doing helpful deeds. I'm a naturally kind and compassionate person, and I believe that every negative experience in one’s life can result in something positive. I would not consider my behavior to be prosocial for the reason that I had no motive for donating both turkeys to the local food pantry designed to help others. My behavior was altruistic. Why? My act was voluntarily to help needy families with no expectation of a reward in any form, except perhaps a feeling of having done a good deed. Prosocial behavior ranges over a continuum from the most selfless acts of altruism to helpful acts that are motivated entirely by self-interest (Taylor, Peplau, Sears, 2006). The fact that I was...
