“Don’t be afraid of change you may end up losing something good, but you will probably end up gaining something better.” (unknown) Change can be something you are afraid of, but in the end it usually is for the better. Similarly in J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye and Pleasantville directed by Gary ross, the characters don’t understand what can happen when change occurs. In both Catcher in the Rye and Pleasantville change is represented as a beneficial thing, but it can also be frightening.
In Catcher in the Rye change is beneficial and frightening. In the novel, Mr. Antonelli talks to Holden and gives Holden advice about what to do with his life. He tells Holden that he can change but he can only change if he wants to. “You’re going …show more content…
He never wants change to occur in his life he wants his life to stay the way it is. On page 58 he says, “ One thing about packing depressed me a little. I had to pack these brand new ice skates my mother had practically just sent me a couple of days before.” Holden doesn’t like packing because he is moving on instead of staying in the same place. The idea of moving on scares him because he is terrified of change. Holden is a character who rather have everything stay the exact same instead of everything changing. “I was thinking about the lagoon in Central Park, down near Central Park South. I was wondering if it would be frozen over when I got home, and if it was, where did the ducks go. I was wondering where the ducks went when the lagoon got all icy and frozen over.” Holden constantly talks about the ducks because he knows they have gone somewhere but he isn’t sure where. If Holden finds out where the ducks go he can finally figure out himself. The ducks are a huge part of change in this novel because if Holden finally find out where they go he could understand where he should go. “Change is scary but not as scary as staying the same the same forever.”
