He wanted people to understand how horrible it was for the slaves and how it affected them and the slaveholders. The audience of Douglass were northerners who either showed no concern or were supportive of slavery. He wanted to show to his audience how slavery was terrible for slaves and how it corrupts slaveholders. During Douglass's time as a slave, he witnessed many times when his masters were once kind-hearted but then they turned into cruel people. Douglas had a master, Mrs. Auld, who was nice and taught Douglass his ABCs but she soon changed once her husband brought to her attention that being kind to slaves was useless. “ That cheerful eye, under the influence of slavery, soon became red with rage.”( Poetic Tools Narrative) This describes how the influence of slavery makes a person evolve from someone kind to someone cruel. Another one of Douglass’ masters, Mr. Plummer, was an inhumane man who whipped woman till they bled. “(He would) whip upon her naked back till she was literally covered with blood. These examples prove that slavery is not healthy for slaveholders minds it shows how a good and kind person is turned into horrible and cruel.
