There are many different explanations regarding the creation of the Earth. Various cultures and religions all have their own explanations that were passed down through generations that specifically explain the development of Earth. The Modoc Tribe tells their story about the creation of Earth through “When Grizzlies Walked Upright.” The Christian religion explains its version of Earth’s creation through the first two chapters in Genesis in the Bible. Both of these stories have a spiritual head figure, punishments for acting out and an above world, however their differences include a difference in the order of the creation and humans in each story. In Genesis, the text states “And the Lord God commanded the man, you are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die” (Genesis 2: 16-17). God did not want Adam or Eve to eat from a certain tree, however, temptation gets the best of them and therefore they were punished and forced to leave the garden of Eden. In “When Grizzlies Walked Upright” the Sky Spirit gets angry because a grizzly bear married his daughter and created humans. The Sky Spirit was upset that a new race has been created without his help and said “Get down on your hands and knees. You have wronged me, and from this moment all of you will walk on four feet and never talk again” (“When Grizzlies Walked Upright” 21). The Sky Spirit cursed the grizzlies by taking away the privileges of walking on two feet and talking. In Genesis, God created animals prior to the creation of humans, it states “And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky”. So then God created the great creatures of the sea…” (Genesis 1:14-15). Humans were created after animals in Genesis, however, the Modoc story says that creatures were created before humans were introduced. Humans were created form Chief of the Sky Spirits daughter and a grizzly bear. The story says. “When she was a young woman, she and the eldest son of the grizzly bears were married. In the years that followed they had many children, who were not as hairy as the grizzlies, yet did not look exactly like their spirit mother either,” (“When Grizzlies Walked Upright” 21) which describes that humans were created by the animals.
