The nineteenth century’s view on work differed greatly for men and women, as it was assumed that they shared separate work spheres. When America experienced an urban growth and an expanding industrial economy in the late nineteenth century, countless job opportunities opened up for men. However, this growth brought minimal growth in opportunities for women. Women immigrants experienced unfair working conditions; their jobs came with low pay, long hours, and very dangerous working conditions.
