The similarities between my supervisor and myself in our gender, race, and ethnicity is different from the standpoint my supervisor is a female Caucasian. Our ethnicity is also different, she is from the southern California prior to relocating to Colorado. I lived in central California but align myself with the New Jersey because of the many states (NJ, PA, NY, and MD) I lived in through my life time. I do think my time I lived in California helps my supervisor and I get along, when time is critical or short we have the ability focus on our work without being too ridged about assisting our co-workers while maintaining focus on the outcome while chaos is swirling around us. This laisser-faire attitude helps maintain my blood pressure and

Differences Between Leadership and Management

...Differences between leadership and management Steve Garthe LDR/300 September 21, 2015 Earl Levith Leadership and management is a strong need for any company worldwide to become successful in their categories of business. Although there are vast similarities between the two, there are also some differences that have been known to separate the two completely. Defining Leadership has been given to us by Merriam as “a position as a leader of a group, organization, etc.” Additionally, Merriam states that leadership is “the time when a person holds the position of a leader” and “the power or ability to lead other people.” This definition allows us to think about the simplistic ways of a supervisor or team lead in which they go about their day in tasking others beneath the. Merriam also defines management as “the act or skill of controlling and making decisions about a business, department, sports team, etc.” If a company hires a manager who has a high level of skill providing production flow and profitability to their company, this will filter down through the ranks and provide those beneath the manager the tools for success. From personal experience, spending many years both a leadership role and the managerial role has provided a new level of understanding of what responsibilities each one of these positions held for the companies that I was employed with. Many of the leadership roles that were held have been basic led of operations style positions within a scan department...

Ethics Essay Eth/316

...Ethics Essay Shannon Williams ETH/316 November 25, 2013 Jeremy Gephart Your beliefs don’t make you a better person, your behavior does. This is a saying that I have been taught as a child. While reading this essay it will discuss the similarities and differences of virtue ethics, utilitarianism, and deontology, theory as it relates to ethics and morals. Also how a personal experience that explains the relationship between virtue, values, and moral concepts as it relates to one of the theories. Ethics and morality play a major role in day to day situations; they dictate how to respond in an acceptable manner. Similarities and Differences Virtue Ethics deals with what is right or wrong. It is a character-based ethic that views ones action over a period and not for a single action. Utilitarianism theory implies that an action is morally right when it creates a worthy result for the greater good of the people. Deontology is a moral theory that emphasis on one’s duty to do the right thing or take an action, without thinking of the consequences. All three theories deal with how a person perceives, judges, and react to a situation. Each theory deals with demonstrating the good in a person; making the right or morally correct decision. Both Virtue Ethics and Deontology deal with what is ethically and morally right or wrong. Motivation is what causes a significant difference among the three theories. Virtue ethics emphasis trying to achieve excellence in...

Business Ethics

...certain values that are deeply important to myself, as well as, how some of those values may conflict one another in the work place. While doing some research on clarifying my values, I came across a few interesting articles that directly correlate with the issues coming in this paper. First, an article titled, “How to deal with Conflicting Values,” gives us a powerful example of how to handle ethical dilemmas when they come to work. Second, an article titled, “Building Tone at the Top: The role of the CEO, Board, and COO,” talks about setting the standard for ethical decision making at the very top of the company. The goal of this paper is to achieve a better understanding of what values are most important to me, as well as, develop a better understanding of what values companies possess while looking for jobs in the near future. After reading over the list of values, five jumped off of the page: Competence, Diversity, Helpfulness, Success, and Wealth. First, I chose competence, because I believe that becoming competent in your field of study or even in every- day activities will allow you to succeed in life. Second, I decided to choose Diversity. The reason why we live in the most powerful country in the world comes from having the most diverse population. Third, is helpfulness, I chose this value because I simply enjoy helping people on an everyday basis. No matter how small or big the task is I always feel much better about myself for acting in a helpful manor. Fourth, I believe...

Thinking About Diversity and Inclusion

...Cultural Diversity Abstract In this paper I will be answering the following questions: What are the dimensions of cultural diversity? Identify and briefly explain the dimensions by referencing both textbooks. With what ethnic, cultural, or other groups do you identify? Describe what members of your social circle have in common. What is the difference between diversity and inclusion? What is the importance of workplace diversity training? What is your experience with workplace culture? Could there be, or could there have been, more inclusion? Thinking About Diversity and Inclusion Dimensions of cultural diversity are racial groups. It is a group that is socially set apart by obvious physical difference. Ethnic groups are groups set apart by culture patterns or nationality. There are also religious groups and gender groups. Age can also be considered a dimension. Minority groups generally share the characteristics of experiencing unequal treatment, sharing similarities, involuntary membership, group solidarity, and marriage within the group. I identify myself with being in a religious group. There are many similarities but we also have many differences. However, the things that my social circle has in common are the want to just have peace amongst us. I mean we all go to work every day and deal with the variety of people’s attitude, and their different mood swings day to day. So, when my social circle gets together all we want to do is discuss different things, have a...

Leadership Action Plan

...explanations. But, generally, the influence of one person supporting others to achieve a common mission has been the theme.  Some recognize a leader simply as one who people follow, or one who monitors and directs others, and there are others who define leadership as unifying a group to achieve a common goal.  There have been studies that mesh attributes, functional behavior, power, visions, intelligence; the list goes on, as indicators for a good leader.  But one thing I found common with The Leadership Challenge and other excerpts that I have read on leadership was that the measure of how great a leader is, is the measure of the his or her followers.  Assessments               My current employer, in order to assess employees and supervisors, has used performance appraisals.  However, with the increased emphasis on collaboration, employee development, and customer service, the emphasis has shifted to worker feedback from the full circle of sources represented. The multiple input approach to another individuals feedback of performance is sometimes...

Feelings over Creativity

...Leadership: What is it? The inquiry of what make an effective leader is an ongoing question in the education system. This topic is used to encourage students to think critically while preparing for the working America. We’ve all been asked, at some point in time, to identify the qualities of a leader. What makes a person a leader? What separates leaders from followers? As a child, a leader was the person at the front of the line. As a pre-teen, a leader was a role model. Whether it was a parent, actress, singer or teacher; at that point in life, a leader was whoever was looked up to. Entering the teenage and young adult years, everyone wants to hold the title of a leader and not a follower. This is the age where we experiment – try different things – and if others followed suit, we were a leader. As we get older, we grasp a more elaborate definition of a leader and strive to one day fit that description. In my opinion, a leader is someone who can influence others, whether it is positive or negative influence. A leader is that person that others listen to, respect, and follow. Daniel Goleman and Mitch McCrimmon both have views on what makes a leader. Goleman (1998) discusses how a great leader has emotional intelligence, which is the control over one’s emotions; while McCrimmon (2005) focuses more on thought leadership, which is based on innovation. Both articles provide an in-depth insight into the world of leadership. Emotional Intelligence of Leaders Daniel Goleman’s article...

Personal Ethics

...Personal Ethics Ethics could be described as one of the most popular term heard in the health systems these days. While ethics can be said as a important part of the care, ethics is also be said as personal. Discerning the right and wrong when facing dilemmas can be the simplest way of describing the ethics. Ethics begin with the moral reasoning of the individual and as the moral reasoning of the individual can be formed by the individual's cultural, religious, social and educational values and backgrounds. So the ethics can be personal to each individual and it may not be possible to have different individuals share identical ethical values although similarities could be possible. Like many professions, nursing also have the code of ethics to assist the professionals to resolve the dilemmas and discern between the accepted and non accepted practises. The nursing profession, like many other professions, has its own code of ethics to help the nurses to determine the acceptable and non acceptable situations and actions, the rights and responsibilities that are approved by the nursing board and society. (Garrett, Baillie, McGeehan, & Garret, 2010). The protection of individual’s rights is well defined in the code of ethics while it also set forth a standard of care for the patients under the professional care of the nurses. In this essay, the writer is attempting to discuss the impacts of one’s personal, spiritual and cultural aspects on the ethical situations of the professional...

Creating Cultural Synergy:

...the emergence of multicultural teams in the workplace provides a context. Initially, an assessment of the cultural diversity of the team members is provided. Then, a plan to leverage the richness of culturally diverse team members working together is explored. Finally, in the event that the plan is unsuccessful, a backup plan is offered for consideration. Due to globalization, people from various cultures find themselves working with individuals from other cultures, often in an intercultural team environment. A team is an interdependent group of individuals brought together for innovation and the achievement of a specific goal (Northouse, 2010). Team cohesiveness is positively associated with openness of opinions and collaboration between team members. Disagreement within teams negatively affects team members from sharing points of view (Woerkom & Sanders, 2010). Multicultural teams are more likely to display less cohesion than teams with members that share the same culture. Cultural diversity among team members can contribute to added stress and lack of cohesion because of mistrust and faulty communication within the team (Adler & Gundersen, 2008). Statement of the Problem A six-person work team located in an office in New Jersey must deliver a critical project due in 30 days. Four of the team members have worked together for 9 months and two team members that...

Compar and Contrast of Being a Counselor

...Compare and Contrast of Being a Counselor CNSL/205 09/13/2011 Dr. Katherine Van Hull University of Phoenix This paper was written to inform the reader of the compiled information that is a compare and contrast between myself and what has been predetermined as traits of being a good counselor. This paper is going to include information that was compiled from two different sources of information regarding this topic, and once this information has been compiled I, compared it to myself to see if the information gathered and my personality have some similarities. In order to be a good counselor it was determined that the counselor must first establish a two way street when it comes to talking about the things that are bothering the client. I will take both the counselor and the client to first agree that there will be changes no matter how hard they seem to be and that these changes to help better the relationship and the client. There also must be some sort of understanding between the counselor and his/her clients regarding what is expected by both the counselor and the client; both the clients and counselor also must establish a good chemistry in order for them to make any type of progress. If the patient is unable to establish any type of chemistry then the client has the opportunity to look for someone who he/she will feel comfortable with in order to be able to start their journey to healing. Even though the client is responsible for making the...

Business

...legal identity which means if the business owns money the holder owns money. Explain two reason advantage One benefit of being a sole trader is that I retain all the profit that business makes. This is good because the profit that has been made through selling products or service will come back to the owner. This means all the money that will made from the business retain to the owner as he will not need to pay anyone e.g. staff or supervisor, or accounting etc. For example, if the business receives £3500 in a month from selling t-shirts the full £3500 will retain to the owner. This is a huge advantage because firstly, the owner will have more money to spend in marketing or other promoting recourses and secondly, if more money comes in the more it encourages the owner to work harder. This will make me successful because if I retain all of the money I can expand my business in the future and similarly I will have more available to make my business better, e.g. promote my business effectively. For example, if I have made enough profit for myself and the business, I could expand it by opening a store and hiring staff, as I will have necessary money for this. (Smallbusinesspro.co.uk, 2014) Another benefit will be the owner will have the full control of the business. The owner can run the business without interference of others. This will help the business to be successful because by having the full control...

Personal Reflection Paper

... BSHS 345 Seanee Alexander July 6, 2015 Introduction This paper will focus on a personal experience with vicarious traumatization as well as invidious comparison. Will focus on how to avoid vicarious traumatization in your personal/ work life and ways to strategize to avoid this. These will also be strategies that I use as a Human Service professional to avoid traumatiztion as well. How to Stop Invidious Comparison We have to realize that we are all different and no two people are the same in any way, but as humans we have a natural tendency to constantly compare ourselves to others that we may see on a daily basis or those that we see on television. It is normal to do this to merely evaluate the similarities and differences between yourself and others. In today’s society we have turned in to comparison junkies and this is something that starts at birth with comparing babies on who’s the cutest and then it just carries over throughout the years into adulthood. * We have to learn that comparing ourselves with others is a bad habit and is a sign of low self esteem. Today’s society does project flawlessness within everyone nowadays and that is an untruth, because no one is perfect. *Understanding that everybody is different because that’s just how we are and how we were meant to be. Everyone is born different even with twins, they may look alike, but they have different mindsets, different experiences, and different emotions a lot of the times. ...

...that are working in the organization. Behavior always involves a complex interaction between the person and the situation. An individual preference does not affect the individual alone, but other people around this person. Everyone selects and organizes things differently, especially from different cultures, which is one reason why people behave differently in the same situation. Some people are very unlikely to be treated the same way as the others because everyone has different personalities and come from different backgrounds. Some people like to have all of the attention for themselves, while others are discrete and reserved, doing the work they are supposed to do. In others words, personality combines a set of physical and mental characteristic that reflect how a person looks, thinks, acts and feels. One other way that personal differences and preference can impact organizational ethics is the culture of the employees. For example, in many developing countries, it is acceptable for a senior manager to receive kickbacks from a business partner, as a way to show appreciation for the senior manager’s choice to do business with the other company. While acceptable in some cultures, this type of behavior is considered illegal in the United States, in order to give all companies a fair chance to compete for business. Usually, culture helps determine broad patterns of behavior similarity among individuals; however not all individuals respond to cultural influences. For example...
