In the world everyone comes from different cultures, beliefs, and appearances. Racism has been a part of society for a pretty long time. Racism occurs because one person or group may not like another race. Thus, people harass and hurt each other whether physically, emotionally, or mentally. Racism can be seen in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and Bodega Dreams by Ernesto Quinonez, where in both books whites are portrayed to be superior then the rest. For example in the 1920’s the whites thought that they were the superior race. Till today many different races look down on each other. Quinonez 2000 novel Bodega Dreams shows us how our race could determine how we are treated in society. The novel talks about the real life of Spanish Harlem neighborhoods. Even though it is not encouraged, and is looked down upon, many people continue to act racist and put down one another. Racism will always cause some people to think that they are superior than others. In both books Bodega Dreams and The Great Gatsby set examples of racism. Racism put you in the top of society or at the bottom. In Bodega Dreams, racism can have effect people because it leads to thinking that their race isn’t capable of anything or can make them feel out of place. For example Vera, she was conscious of what other people thought about her and where she came from and her neighborhood is looked down by others, she doesn’t respect it so she hides the truth from her new friends in Miami. In The Great Gatsby Tom’s opinion on the superior race was that the whites are better than the other races and intermarriages should not be allowed. The endings of both books were a bit different. The Great Gatsby ended with Gatsby’s dream and the American dream being over. However Bodega Dreams ended with Bodega giving Lations hope and because Bodega things will change for the better in the
