Brian Robeson is stranded alone in the Canadian wilderness after the pilot of the plane was faced with a deadly heart attack, which led the plane to sink into the lake and from then onwards Brian was along. Gary Paulsen’s use of language features makes the audience captivated, which allows the audience to visualise and connect with the story.Paulsen’s use of language features includes a large variety of metaphors, hyperboles, onomatopoeia and imagery. But in Paulsen’s writing he was mainly focused on repetition, similes and personification.

Throughout the novel similes were used to make descriptions more emphatic or vivid as well as incorporating two different things to compare to allow them to remain separate in spite of their similarities. Paulsen writes “The memory was like a knife cutting into him. Slicing deep into him with hate.” (p.25) A simile was used to make to reader feel the pain and to show empathy for the character. It was also used to emphasise the meaning of the text which allows the audience to think deeply within the story. Similes were a major part into making the story come to life as well as making it more captivating.

Paulsen’s use of personification encourages the audience to relate more to the object or idea as easier for us to relate to something with human characteristics. During the novel personification was used to make the story more dramatic and interesting and the carry across a certain mood. Personification characterizes objects and animals by describing it using human traits, qualities, emotions and physical gestures. Paulsen writes “Be asleep, his mind screams at the pilot” (p.34) Personification was used here to exaggerate to moment; as the Pilot’s brain screaming is unrealistic. This quote is telling the audience that when the pilot was dying it was as if he’s mind is forcing him to fall asleep.
