In the story “The Scarlet Ibis”, James Hurst uses similes and metaphors to demonstrate sadness and death in the world. During the story, the family went outside to figure out what the noise was that was disturbing their meal. They came out to find a scarlet ibis laying there dead. “It lay on the earth like a broken vase of red flowers, even death couldn't mar its beauty” (Hurst 3). This quote is showing a simile.
