Many argue that the blues and jazz are the first truly American musical forms. With its origins in slave narratives, the blues took root during the 1920’s and 1930’s as African-America composers, musicians and singers performed in the cabarets and clubs of Harlem. Jazz, however, has is origins in New Orleans. Today, we can still appreciate the music of Bessie Smith, Duke Ellington, and B.B. King.
Rock and roll is also a distinctively American form of music. Our country’s first “rock star” was without a doubt Elvis Presley, who emerged in the nation’s airwaves in the mid-1950’s with such hits as Heartbreak Hotel, Don’t Be Cruel, and All Shook Up. A decade later, Americans were expressing themselves musically through rhythm and blues, pop, folk rock, and protest music. Today, thanks to recording technology, we have easy access to our country’s rich musical

Purpose and Significance Thanks to the globalization, the demand for the bilingual workers is on the rise. As English majors, we believe that what we can do to be more competitive in this increasingly globalized world is to have a solid command of this language. The certificates such as TEM-8(Test for English Majors Band Eight) is a must but what really matters is what ability the students really have possessed and could be employed at ease. Upon reflecting on the TEM-4 (Test for English Majors Band Four) /TEM-8 scores the seniors have acquired, we clearly learn that there is still quite a room for improvement, especially when it comes to writing. Some students still find it tough to put pen into the paper and work out a satisfactory essay; some are hard-pressed to express themselves smoothly in the...

Heaven or Hell

...descriptions of the reality and horror of war are frightening and shocking to the reader, aimed to affect emotionally and cause them to consider. The story is structured to make the reader visualize pain and death in war – Hell, when everything appears lost and hopeless, and Heaven - heroic and victorious, when the obstacles are overcome and the “Draconic Empire” defeated. The story has a formal register to deliver suspense and the factual horrors of war. This has been achieved in a number of different ways, firstly, the complex sentence, “Sergeant Hugh Mott and his colleagues frantically worked away in the belly of the bridge whilst troops continued to traverse the spine.” This creates formality through its sophisticated structure coupled with a serious and impersonal tone. Standard English also creates formality with the active verb phrase, “With a resounding thud his body hit the cliff”. There is no slang or dialect which helps to develop the formal and complex tone intended. The use of lexis, with the polysyllabic words, also creates a formal tone. The verbs, “surging”, “paralysing”, “illuminated”, and the pre-modifying adjective, “terrifying” are all a formal use of lexis. The story also avoids abbreviations such as the pronoun and verb, “He had”, instead of “He’d” which is more informal. Heaven or Hell is targeted at a teenage male audience who become gripped by the powerful descriptions and breath-taking scenes of war. To appeal to this audience I have used semantics in the...

Sentences

...Sentence structure This guide explains how sentences are constructed and how different types of sentences are formed. It shows you how to punctuate each type correctly and how to combine different sentence types for effective written communication. Other useful guides: Using paragraphs, Using the comma. What is a complete sentence? Sentences provide us with the framework for the clear written expression of our ideas. The aim in writing is always to write in complete sentences which are correctly punctuated. Sentences always begin with a capital letter and end in either a full stop, exclamation or question mark. A complete sentence always contains a verb, expresses a complete idea and makes sense standing alone. Andy reads quickly. This is a complete sentence as it contains a verb (reads), expresses a complete idea and it does not need any further information for the reader to understand the sentence. When Andy reads is an incomplete sentence. It contains a verb, but the opening word when tells us that something happens when Andy reads; we need more information to complete the idea. When Andy reads, he reads quickly. This is now a complete sentence, as the whole idea of the sentence has been expressed. The following examples show the incomplete sentences in italics. There is another theory. Which should not be ignored. There is another theory which should not be ignored. The proposal was finally rejected. Although they considered it. Although...

Chem Exam

...parts. In the first part, you will analyze an unknown solution for the presence of seven common ions. In the second part, you will test an unknown solid to determine which of two possible identities is correct. Part I. Spot Tests for Some Common Ions A simple approach to the qualitative analysis of an unknown solution is to test for the presence of each possible ion by adding a reagent which will cause the ion, if it is in the sample, to react in a characteristic way. This method involves a series of “spot” tests, one for each ion, carried out on separate samples of the unknown solution. The difficulty with this way of doing qualitative analysis is that frequently, particularly in complex mixtures, one species may interfere with the analytical test for another. Although interferences are common, there are many ions which can be identified in mixtures by simple spot tests. In this experiment we will use spot tests for the analysis of a mixture which may contain the following commonly encountered ions in solution: CO32– SO42– PO43– SCN Cl – – carbonate sulfate phosphate thiocyanate chloride acetate ammonium C2H3O2– NH4+ 78 Chemistry 1B Experiment 16 The procedures we involve simple acid-base, precipitation, complex ion formation or oxidation-reduction reactions. You will carry out each test three times. First, you will test 1 M solutions of each ion, so you can easily observe the expected results. Then you will test 0.1 M solutions of each ion, which will require...

...Types, and Common Mistakes Sentences are classified as simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex. This designation is based on the clauses used to create the sentence. Clauses: Every clause must have a subject and a verb. There are two types of clauses: independent and dependent (subordinate). An independent clause contains a subject, a verb, and expresses a complete thought. It is able to stand independently. Example: The class is hard. A dependent (subordinate) clause contains a subject and a verb but does not express a complete thought, and, therefore, cannot be left alone. If a subordinate clause is left alone, a fragment will result. These clauses depend on independent clauses to express a complete thought. Example: If the class is hard, Sentence Types: A simple sentence is one independent clause with no subordinate clauses. Example: The statue is in the garden. A compound sentence has two or more independent clauses and no subordinate clauses. The two clauses are joined by either a coordinating conjunction or a semicolon. Coordinating Conjunctions (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) can be easily recalled by learning the acronym FANBOYS. Example: I finished reading the book, and I returned it to the library. The girls went to the store; they bought new shoes. A complex sentence consists of one independent clause with one subordinate clause. Example: When the teacher spoke, the students were silent. A compound-complex sentence has at least two independent clauses and at...

Organic compounds also contains other elements such as hydrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, nitrogen, or sulfur. The foods you eat provide the organic compounds that your cells are made up of and that they use to function. Organic compounds give the elements carbon, hydrogen, oxygen (“CHO”) that are needed to make biological macromolecules. Biological macromolecules, are large molecules (also known as polymers). A monomer is a molecule that is able to bond in long chains. Monomers are small molecules that may be joined together in a repeating fashion to form more complex molecules called polymers.
