In this book, there is many different examples of irony throughout the story. Solstice Hayle was having her baby on Luna and it was supposed to be a celebratory time for her and her husband, but it ended up being a tragedy. While the baby was born healthy, the mother died along the way from complications. This is situational irony because everyone thought that a new life would cause happiness, but the situation happened to bring the opposite reaction. Another example of situational irony in Fairest is when the Queen of Luna, Channary, wants something, almost one hundred percent of the time she gets it. Because she has the power and authority, no one wants to displease her. The only thing she really wants though, is Constable Dubrovsky, a man …show more content…
This element adds a more powerful connection in the text and shows depth. Symbols repeat throughout a story to bring a highly complex idea used in only one to two words, instead of many. It gives a piece something special that other works might not have. A symbol that constantly comes up in this book by Marissa Meyer is mirrors. Mirrors show the truth about one’s self without distorting or prettying it up. It appears often because the protagonist hates that they show her real self. Levana wants them banned, but unfortunately she is not queen, so whenever she sees one, her hideousness that is hidden shines through. It is a natural symbol because all over the world mirrors stand to show the true reflection of one’s inside and out, no matter who they are. The author does this to amplify the fact that the main character is not beautiful and has multiple flaws. They show the extent of Levana’s hatred for herself. Equally important, the Earth is also a big figure during the story. It shows up on a beautifully made quilt, necklace, gloves and the main sight in the sky. It is a private symbol because it not only represents beauty, but it represents Solstice Hayle. She made different fabrics that perfectly displayed how pretty it was from afar. Those fabrics were her personal touch that belonged to her and only her. The emblem also helps to tether the setting of the moon to the Earth which is where the readers are. It creates a connection
