CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
OVERVIEW OF SIWES The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) was established by Industrial Training Fund (ITF) in 1973 to solve the problem of lack of adequate practical skills preparatory for employment in industries by Nigerian graduates of tertiary institutions. It is an acceptable skill training program which forms part of the approved minimum academic standard in various degree programs for all Nigerian universities, polytechnics and college of education to acquire industrial skills and experience in their various disciplines. The SIWES program involves the students, the university and the industry (employer). It is funded by the Federal Government of Nigeria and jointly coordinated by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) and the National Universities Commission (NUC). This training program is also an effort to bridge the gap existing between theory and practice of engineering, science, agriculture, medicals, management and other professional education programs in the Nigerian tertiary institution.

OBJECTIVE OF SIWES
The objective of SIWES includes the following:
1. To expose students to work methods and techniques in handling equipment and machineries that may not be available in tertiary institutions.
2. Prepares students to contribute to the productivity of their employers and national development immediately after graduation.
3. It provides an avenue for students in Nigerian tertiary institutions to acquire industrial skills and experience in their various disciplines.
4. Provides exposure of students to the environment in which they may eventually work, thereby enabling them to see how the future professions are organized in practice.
5. Enable students to bridge the gap between knowledge acquired in school and the relevant production skills required in work organizations.
6. To make the transition from the university to the labor market easy for students, and thus enhance students contact for the later job placement.
7. To give room for social and academic interaction with professionals in their field and working environment and also to expose the reality of working places.

INTRODUCTION TO INTEGRATED DATA SERVICES LIMITED (IDSL) Integrated Data Service Limited (IDSL) was incorporated in 1988 as one of the eleven subsidiary companies of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to offer geophysical and petroleum engineering services in the upstream sector of the oil industry. APPLIED COMPUTER SERVICES DEPARTMENT (ACSD) As the use of electronic communication has become more common for businesses of all sizes, so has the need for the creation and staffing of a computer services department in any company that employs telephony and internet devices to conduct business and Integrated Data Services Limited is not an exception..
Information technology is all about allowing for the most effective and competent forms of electronic communication to take place. These communications may come in the form of telephony, such as point to point phone calls or audio conference calls. They may also be provided as video and web conferences, internal communications such as common network drives or server access, and external devices such as electronic mail that is sent through a secure server. Obviously, there has to be someone within the organization that understands how these forms of communication work, and can ensure they remain in proper working order at all times. This is where the ACSD come handy in IDSL.
ACSD is a collection of persons who are experts when it comes to electronic communications of all kinds. In addition to understanding what forms of electronic data, visual, and audio communication are available, the department should be able to evaluate available services and determine which services and vendors can provide the best equipment and services support for the company. Along with making determinations about what equipment to use and which vendors to work with, the department should also be able to oversee the day to day operations of all electronic communication devices within the company.
Here are some basic functions of ACSD in IDSL:
1. Overseeing of all equipment which includes configuring network access, setting up and making changes to existing workstations, and assigning access rights at various levels to key personnel within the company.
2. Computer hardware maintenance/troubleshoot and the company’s business software.
3. ACSD ensures there is a workable disaster recovery backup in the event that some section of the network should happen to fail. The department teams understand the adverse effect of network redundancy to the continued healthy operations of the company.
4. Providing final decision with selection of conference call vendors, web site hosting, choice of primary and backup servers, and even the choice of a local and long distance phone services with an eye to making sure the company has the best communication resources on hand that it can afford.
ACSD is much more than just a group of people who show up when your computer crashes. The department plays a valuable role in making all other departments productive and successful in their endeavors.

OTHER DEPARTMENTS IN IDSL WHO’S OPERATIONS DEPEND ON ACSD
1. Reservoir Engineering Services Department (RESD): This department offers full integrated services in reservoir engineering and management and also assists its clients to optimize their hydrocarbon resource by use of efficient and effective state of the art reservoir engineering tools
2. Data Acquisition Department (DAD): This department is positioned to offer the best cost effective seismic data service based on the department’s knowledge of the terrain, state of art technology, experienced staff, a robust community relations policy and environment friendly procedures.
3. Data Storage: Data storage, integrity and safety are a major concern of our clients. This is the reason why qualitative data storage services have been offered over the years to a wide range of clients of the oil and gas industry in Nigeria.
4. Finance and Accounts Department (FAD): This department takes responsibility for organizing the financial and accounting affairs including the preparation and presentation of appropriate accounts and the provision of financial information for managers. The department uses System Application Products (SAP) to carry out most of its operations.

CHAPTER THREE
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
CONCLUSION
My six months industrial training at Integrated Data Services Limited (IDSL) was a challenging one and I was opportune to acquire good practical knowledge on hardware, software and networking. At the hardware section, I learnt how to remove CMOS battery from a motherboard, setting up of a projector, connection of a power cord. At the software section, I was taught on the process of installation of operating systems, Microsoft office software, system updates and anti-virus, browsers, tune-up utilities. At the networking section, I learnt how to fire an Ethernet port, pinging of a network to know if it is working, setting up of proxy settings of systems.

RECOMMENDATION
Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is important because it prepares student for the labour market and it exposes student to the outside world. During my industrial training, I observed that there is limited space for attachment position of students by organizations for industrial training so it is therefore recommended that all school authorities and the government should liaise with these organizations and also with the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) for the acceptance of IT students.
One of the primary challenges faced by intending students for internship is acceptance by organizations of choice. It is therefore recommended that organizations especially private organizations be prevailed upon not to reject students wishing to do industrial training with them.
Lastly, organizations should endeavor to pay a form of stipend to students under industrial training to enable them easily transport themselves.
