Six degrees of separation (also referred to as the "Human Web") refers to the idea that, if a person is one step away from each person they know and two steps away from each person who is known by one of the people they know, then everyone is at most six steps away from any other person on Earth.

six degrees of separation
Six degrees of separation is the theory that anyone on the planet can be connected to any other person on the planet through a chain of
acquaintances that has no more than five intermediaries. The theory was first proposed in 1929 by the Hungarian writer Frigyes Karinthy
in a short story called "Chains."
In the 1950's, Ithiel de Sola Pool (MIT) and Manfred Kochen (IBM) set out to prove the theory mathematically. Although they were able to
phrase the question (given a set N of people, what is the probability that each member of N is connected to another member via k_1, k_2,
k_3...k_n links?), after twenty years they were still unable to solve the problem to their own satisfaction. In 1967, American
sociologist Stanley Milgram devised a new way to test the theory, which he called "the small-world problem." He randomly selected people
in the mid-West to send packages to a stranger located in Massachusetts. The senders knew the recipient's name, occupation, and general
location. They were instructed to send the package to a person they knew on a first-name basis who they thought was most likely, out of
all their friends, to know the target personally. That person would do the same, and so on, until the package was personally delivered
to its target recipient.
Although the participants expected the chain to include at least a hundred intermediaries, it only took (on average) between five and
seven intermediaries to get each package delivered. Milgram's findings were published in Psychology Today and inspired the phrase "six
degrees of separation." Playwright John Guare popularized the phrase when he chose it as the title for his 1990 play of the same name.
Although Milgram's findings were discounted after it was discovered that he based his conclusion on a very small number of packages, six
degrees of separation became an accepted notion in pop culture after Brett C. Tjaden published a computer game on the University of
Virginia's Web site based on the small-world problem. Tjaden used the Internet Movie Database (IMDB) to document connections between
different actors. Time Magazine called his site, The Oracle of Bacon at Virginia, one of the "Ten Best Web Sites of 1996."
In 2001, Duncan Watts, a professor at Columbia University, continued his own earlier research into the phenomenon and recreated
Milgram's experiment on the Internet. Watts used an e-mail message as the "package" that needed to be delivered, and surprisingly, after
reviewing the data collected by 48,000 senders and 19 targets (in 157 countries), Watts found that the average number of intermediaries
was indeed, six. Watts' research, and the advent of the computer age, has opened up new areas of inquiry related to six degrees of
separation in diverse areas of network theory such as as power grid analysis, disease transmission, graph theory, corporate
communication, and computer circuitry.

Six Degrees of Separation

...ARTICLES OF CONFEDERATION: After the Revolutionary War, Congress realized they needed something to unite the states but also protect their rights. Thus came the Articles of Confederation. It helped establish a central government that contained a unicameral body of Congress. It also established the powers that Congress did and did not have. While Congress made accomplishments under them, such as winning the Revolutionary War, the Articles of Confederation made the government weak. Politics and Power is the theme because with this subject, they feared giving the government so much power that they didn't give it enough to help the country function properly. RATIFICATION OF CONSTITUTION (FEDS VS. ANTI-FEDS): Due to how weak and ineffective the Articles of Confederation were, delegates met up and decided to recreate it, forming the Constitution. Fierce debates over the ratification of the Constitution between the supporters, known as the Federalists, and those who opposed, known as Anti-Federalists, lasted almost a year. Federalists argued that a strong central government would make the efforts of the Revolution useless, restrict states' rights, and it didn't offer protection of individual rights. The Federalists eventually backed off and included a Bill of Rights, allowing the Constitution to be ratified. American and National Identity is the theme because it's about how the two opposing groups had different views on what the Constitution should contain, therefore resulting...

"Un"Social Networking

...causing health problems are some of the problems created from the technological advancement of this day and age. Social networks have been fabricated as the means of establishing and maintaining contacts and meetings in order to build online communities of people with similar interests and activities. These advancements could be more convenient for exchanging messages, following the latest trends, joining interest groups, and participating in real life events. Most know of the small-world phenomenon, soon after meeting a stranger, we are surprised to discover that we have a mutual friend, or we are connected through a short chain of acquaintances. In his article, Duncan Watts uses this intriguing phenomenon, colloquially called" six degrees of separation", as a prelude to a more general exploration.  With an ever growing social outlet, this phenomenon is giving youth an easier way to bridge the gap of being connected to most. A curious survey showed that 62% of people age 16 and older believe that dwelling in the virtual environment is an integral part of their lives: It’s rapid, convenient, and informative. Identification of One's Self

...Identification of One’s Self In the opening lines of Fred Schepisi’s 1993 film, “Six Degrees of Separation”, Ouisa Kittredge states, “I read somewhere that everybody on this planet is separated by only six other people. Six degrees of separation.” This refers to the theory that each person is separated from another person by no more than six people. This theory will turn out to play a major role in the plot of the film. The entertaining and flashy movie was filled with “chaos and control”, which is respectively referred to Wassily Kandinsky’s paintings, “Black Lines” and “Several Circles”. The chaos begins with Ouisa and Flan Kittredge, two New York City socialites, who live in a lavish Fifth Avenue apartment, welcome a young African American man named Paul, who claims to be Sidney Poitier’s son, into their apartment. Little do the Kittredges know, Paul will eventually contribute to the theory that everyone is separated by only six other people. New, unusual experiences can instantly change one’s self and in return, prompt the person of re-evaluating their life and their identity that separated them from all other’s. When the ambiance-filled movie begins, the audience instantly sees the production design that gave the film a sophisticated look. The Kittredges are soaked up in their social life and do not realize that their life that many dream of could change in an instant. The couple is getting ready to have a business dinner with Geoffrey Miller, a South African...

Ifrs vs Gaap

...Comparing IFRS to GAAP As we are so often, America as a business entity can be very stubborn when it comes to maintaining the way we do things against external pressure. Whether it is differences between the American standard of measurement and the metric system or differences in accounting standards, the United States likes to be its own boss so to speak. As stated before, one of the premier differences in business practices between the United States and the rest of the world is the difference in accounting practices. The United States maintains the usage of GAAP or “Generally Accepted Accounting Principles,” while much of the developed world uses IFRS or “International Financial Reporting Standards.” While both systems are more than viable, there are many subtle differences between the two. These differences can affect companies in a variety of different ways especially if IFRS becomes a mandatory practice for the United States and thus, all accounting information changes would have to be retroactive. Depreciation and Fair Value One large difference between GAAP and IFRS is the aspect of component depreciation. According to Marie Leone from CFO.com, component depreciation means that companies must “recognize and depreciate equipment components separately if the components can be physically separated from the asset and have different useful lifespans” (Leone, 2010). This method of evaluating assets is required by IFRS but not by GAAP. While this practice is allowed to be...

Histroy

...Of course, how you define social media can determine where you actually start the history of the medium. For example: some people define communication by letters via the postal service as social media, but most people define it as the ability to use the internet to share and communicate instantly with others, even across great distances. That means, that social media can be traced back to one website in particular – and no, it wasn’t Facebook. 1997: The Birth of Social Media The first social media site that everyone can agree actually was social media was a website called Six Degrees. It was named after the ‘six degrees of separation’ theory and lasted from 1997 to 2001. Six Degrees allowed users to create a profile and then friend other users. Six Degrees even allowed those who didn’t register as users to confirm friendships and connected quite a few people this way. From Six Degrees, the internet moved into the era of blogging and instant messaging. Although blogging may not seem like social media precisely, the term fits because people were suddenly able to communicate with a blog other instantly as well as other readers. The term “blog” is a form of the phrase “Weblog” which was coined by Jorn Barger,...

Decision Making Process

... The Process Following the six steps of the decision-making process, I made a career changing choice. The six stages of the process, as outlined by Bateman and Snell (2011) are “identify and diagnose the problem, generate alternative solutions, evaluate alternatives, make the choice, implement the decision and evaluate the decision” (p. 89). An emphasis on time management played a major factor in the decision to reenlist also. Identify Problem Exiting the military with no educational achievements created uncertainty on obtaining a quality job with respectable wages and benefits. Enrolling into school as a 27-year-old freshman was also very intimidating. Maintaining the current lifestyle seemed nearly impossible. These situations presented cons of exiting the military on 27 November 2011. The problem was discharging from the military was not what I wanted but transferring from McGuire was. After numerous requests for a transfer over an eight-year period and constant rejections, it seemed hopeless. The only option appeared to be a discharge. It created the feeling of loving something that did not love you back. Alternative Solutions After gaining advice from the career advisor, I generated a game plan. 1. Start separation process in January and schedule required briefings. 2. Start reenlistment process and get paperwork done in case I changed...

Anticommunism

...is used to describe reckless, unsubstantiated accusations, as well as attacks of the character or lack thereof of political adversaries (University of Illinois, 2011). There are a variety of differences between anticommunism and McCarthyism. Anticommunism refers to conservatives, liberals, and socialists and the basic ideals that connect their political system. This system of social operation is often counterproductive to the modern American capitalist system of government that many American households enjoy. McCarthyism, however, attempts to create an idea of “guilt by association,” simply meaning that mere association with an individual places them in such a category. For example, McCarthy created the six degrees of separation chart, stating that each individual is only six steps away from any other person on Earth, claiming...

How to Build a Powerful Network

...author, New York Times #1 bestsellers, Who's Got Your Back and Never Eat Alone quotes: “The currency of real networking is not greed but generosity.” The article then goes on and describe the ways in which one can diversify and strength his/her network. The author describes that the best way to increase the efficiency of your network is by strengthening your relationship with people who you already have in your network. The article also talks about the weak ties and how they can help you increase the effectiveness of your network. Weak ties are normally outside one’s inner circle and hence have a greater probability to give new information that your close relationship might not. The article then goes on to talk about the three degree of separation. This idea specifically excited me. A person extended network is much more diverse and bigger than he realize. This gave birth to one of the early taglines of LinkedIn “Your Network is bigger than you think”. It also gives an idea about an ideal network. An ideal network would be where you have both the close allies and the weak ties. In words of Reid Hoffmann “The best professional...

...advantage. The cost of goods sold is also higher, as the company has to contend with lower productivity Having made the wrong hiring decision, a company may seek to cut its ongoing losses by replacing the worker. Replacement costs, including sourcing costs, administrative and processing costs, and lost productivity for the hiring manager, all become part of the cost of a bad hire. The cost of a bad hire for a software engineer can exceed mil- lions of dollars, while the wrong choice of a CEO may result in the loss of billions of dollars of shareholder value. Bad hires produce damaging results that can be calculated as the sum of these direct and indirect costs: Productivity loss Loss of customers Loss of brand equity Legal liability Separation costs Replacement costs How to measure QOH Measuring quality of hire amounts to measuring how the candidate varies from pre-hire requirements and expectations. The comparison between pre-hire requirements and the new hire’s actual performance on the job may be made in one of several ways: surveying the hiring manager; consulting annual performance reviews; or measuring worker productivity and tenure directly. Hiring Manager Survey a straightforward measure of quality of hire is to ask...

Harry Harlow

...Harry Israel was born in Fairfield, a small town in Iowa. He was the third of four boys and grew up in a family that placed a top quality on the value of education. When he completed his bachelor and doctoral degrees at Stanford University, his advisor convinced Harry to change his surname from Israel to Harlow because of the concern of possible discrimination of his last name. In 1930, Harlow began work as a comparative psychologist at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and remained there for his entire career. Among many honors, Harlow was a member of the National Academy of Sciences, was elected president of the American Psychological Association, and received the National Medal of Science from President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1967. Harlow is most famous for his work with rhesus monkeys. After studying how to decrease the spread of disease, especially tuberculosis, in animal colonies, Harlow observed the infant monkeys’ unusual behavior that had followed separation from their mothers. This sparked his exploration of affection. Harlow was one of the first researchers to study love scientifically. The misconception that children only needed necessities like food and cleanliness was at its peak in the 60’s. But Harlow was ready to disprove this notion. When separated from their mothers, infant rhesus monkeys exhibit behaviors including emotional discomfort and withdrawal as well as atypical sexual and social behaviors. However, these monkeys seemed to become attached...
