Eugenia Phelen, better known as “Skeeter,” is a fictional character that changed history in the 1960’s. Skeeter makes the book flow. You can see her change throughout the book as a whole and is a very relatable character. Skeeter is a young woman who went to college to get her writing degree. She lives on a family farm with her parents and is part of the social elite group with her best friends, Elizabeth and Hilly. She starts to write a book based on black maids in their home town. Skeeter Phelen is a brave, intelligent, risk taking character that is a huge asset to “The Help.”
First, Skeeter Phelen is a very brave character. “Maybe we should just build you a bathroom outside, Hilly,” (Stockett page 10). What is happening here is that…show more content… For women to realize,We are just two people. Not that much separates us. Not nearly as much as I'd thought.” (Stockett page 492). In this quote, Skeeter is realizing that blacks and whites are not different at all, infact just your skin color. We are all equal people. She was just trying to get her point across. The reason why this makes Skeeter intelligent is because in 1960’s, no one would say that. No one figured that everyone is equal. To this day, racism is still a huge issue. She is intelligent to actually write about this too. She went to college to get a writing degree when all of her friends were dropping out of college to get married. Skeeter realizes that marriage will come. She followed her dreams to become a…show more content… That's chapter 12, don't give yourself away now.” (Stockett page 497). This quote doesn’t really mean much unless you know the background. Skeeter’s plan was to put that Hilly ate Minny’s poop in pie, in her book. They did this because Hilly didn’t want anyone to know that she did that. If people suspected the book to be about Jackson, they would know Hilly was the one who ate poop. They planned on Hilly to tell people it wasn’t about Jackson because everyone listened to her. This a very big risk for Skeeter to put this in her book. What happens if Hilly doesn’t say anything? Or if she is too mad at Minny to even care that everyone knew she ate poop? These were risks Skeeter was willing to take. If Hilly didn’t convince people it wasn’t Jackson, people probably would have gone as far as killing every single maid and probably Skeeter herself. She risked lives. To me this makes Skeeter a huge risk taker. Skeeter is someone who is willing to risk her life and others for something that she strongly believes
