CHAPTER 1 : INTRODUCTION

Introduction In recent years, many developing countries, including Malaysia, have reported a rise in the number of unemployed ICT graduates. Extensive evidence indicates that the root of graduate unemployment is due to mismatches between graduates' skills with employers’ needs. Today's employers specifically look for candidates who are good in their subject knowledge and skills, while possessing good interpersonal skills that will enable them to communicate effectively at the workplace. They must also display good time management, team spirit, a reasonable level of aptitude in English, as well as an awareness and understanding of market and business trends. As the Higher Education Institutes (HEI) is held responsible for producing competent and skilled labor force, the HEI is always facing the demand of producing competent knowledge-based workers from the ICT labor market. Therefore, it is vital for every HEI to provide the essential knowledge, skills and expertise for students to succeed in their work place and meet the future challenges. To ensure that every student is employed, Higher Education Institution (HEI) should consistently update their education system according the employers’ need. Working closely with the industry will help the HEI to identify and close the skill mismatches gap. This raises the concern on the lack of a web based advisory system that can identify the skill gap by facilitating the communication between the HEI and the industry and make the necessary proposal to assist the HEI to revise and update their curriculum in order to close the gap of skills mismatches.
