...Ethics Skit A presentation CAST (in order of appearance) Narrator Albert Amelia Dr. Roberta Bravais Magnus Stacy Lab Member 2 PART I. Narrator stands. Narrator: Dear Dr. Date, So I have this issue, and I don’t really know what to do. I’m a student in a graduate program here at the U, and on my way to run my NMR last Friday night, I passed my advisor’s office. One of my labmates was in there, too, and…let’s just say that, although we are an inorganic group, physical chemistry was more of what I saw… Narrator sits down. Enter Albert and Amelia from the BACK DOOR. Amelia is wearing a coat, looking like she’s heading out, and Albert is carrying an NMR sample. Amelia: Hey, Albert! We’re all going out to happy hour right now to celebrate Victor’s oral defense. Are you coming? Albert: Yeah, that sounds like a great time! I’m just going to run down to the NMR lab to run this sample – I’ll see you there? Amelia: Sounds good! See you in a bit! Amelia leaves through the BACK DOOR. Albert proceeds down the AISLE and passes a sign that says “ADVISOR’S OFFICE”. He slows down and looks into the office. He sees Roberta and Magnus in a full embrace, Magnus’s head resting comfortably on Roberta’s shoulder. From Albert’s face, we see confusion and a little bit of shock. Albert doesn’t remain in front of the office door, though – he continues walking and exits through the FRONT DOOR. Narrator stands. Narrator: So you can see what I mean. What is going on here...

...Dave Chappelle’s Clayton Bigsby skit helps to understand what transgressive humor is, as well as running the risk of reproducing racist stereotypes. Transgressive humor is repeatedly described as uncomfortable laughter, which is a large majority of the types of laughs that are produced in this skit. The character is a blind black guy who has, by some weird instance, has been raised to be as if he were a white supremacist. The skit is a mockumentary of some type of primetime news feature, and follows Bigsby to his book signing where he finds out he is actually black. Bigsby is ruined, and even divorces his wife, who is white, because she was a n* lover. This is not the only occurrence of that word in this skit, and it is completely filled with stereotypes against black people, coming from the only black character in this skit....

...Stop The Bullying Every day, on every playground and hallway in our American schools, children, youths, and teens are harassed, tormented, made fun, physically and mentally abused and embarrassed by bullies. Is your child one of these bullies or a victim of bullying? This bully behavior is not only happening in the United States but all over the world. Many children and youths observe miserably as other school children get bullied at school. Bullies usually pick on personalities and individuals who are weaker than themselves, so they can build themselves to feel better about themselves. Sadly to say, many individuals have witnessed bullying or been a bully themselves. As parents, school administrators and citizens of a community we need to unite and stand up to bullies and give our children the tools, knowledge and skills to reach out for help from their peers, teachers and parents. In many school systems across the nation, plans to protect students from the growing occurrence of bullying are being developed. Bullying within our school systems has become a nationwide growth and development of strategies and proposals between parents, teachers, school administrators and government to assist our school systems to promote antibullying programs, therefore giving the kids who are being bullied an outlet to reach out for help. The current antibully programs in the school systems are not effective because they are based on self-reporting systems and those have been shown...

...the perpetrator spending significant time in jail, yet somehow comedians have found a way to turn this subject into a laughing matter. For example, seasoned stand-up pro Bill Burr once said during his 2012 routine, “They say there is no reason to hit a woman. Really? I could give you like 17 right off the top of my head” (Burr). This daring claim sent the audience into an uproar of laughter. The same joke idea was previously used in Chris Rock’s 1996 routine when he said, “There’s a reason to hit everybody! Ya just don’t do it. Ain’t nobody above an ass whoopin’” (Love)! Again, the audience reciprocated with a positive, chuckle-filled response. Saturday Night Live has also had their share of the subject with having produced three different skits that involved domestic violence humor. Even Family Guy produced a 2011 episode that revolved around domestic violence. Humor about domestic violence may provide laughter in some circumstances, but the laughter only masks the devastating problem that sweeps our nation. The Journal of Family Violence explains domestic violence as, “Intimate partner violence (IPV) often culminates in acute physical injury, sexual assault, and mental health issues” (Karakurt). These actions are punishable by law. Though, the law still has trouble protecting all victims from domestic violence. Mark and Valerie Wynn from the Domestic Violence Report wrote, “Even the most well intended police officers overlook violent crimes against women (e.g., sexual assault...

...respectable product that we could have pride in. One such tribulation was the fact that we were not able to use a script during the presentation, a new experience for most of us. Additionally, I enhanced the difficulty for myself by way of not opting write down potential revealing ideas on a notecard that would help me while presenting the skit. The fact that I do not particularly enjoy oral presentations only enhanced this tribulation. However, with additional practice and memorization outside of class, I was able to gain confidence in myself and the...

...were able to help the group analyze the entire scenario. We strategically gave scenarios that would allow the group the opportunity to visualize each and every entity of the skit. We needed to see what the interviewer and candidates would say and do. We had to figure out how the candidate’s would interact without becoming envious of one another. Next, the team efforts; everyone put in the same amount of time. Two of the team members took the roles of writing out the skit to ensure that everyone would be able to follow. Each member allow everyone to express to express their ideas and concerns. The team made it very comfortable for each member to give feedback and input to each person ideas and suggestions. Each member selected which part they were going to play/act out in the skit. I believe that our personalities went perfectly with each individual. The planning process was great. The first of the planning process was selecting when to meet, we decided to meet after the presentation given by the guest speaker. We meet for about thirty minutes. During that night meeting we collectively agreed to meet one additional time to practice/run throw the skit for a final time. In Week four we meet and practice one other time before we entertained the class. I believe that the group really put on a great skit...

...and a very satirical (and not so serious) performance, and the satire laced skit used a wide range of satirical devices to get our point across, using humor rather than solemnity. Exaggeration or farce was the most heavily used device in my own opinion, and can be seen through the skit, shown by quotes such as “I have a Ph.D. in applied physics.”, followed by “Ph.D., you mean fundamental dumbness (phunduhmentil dummnesst)?”. Of course having that response to that statement is ridiculous, and the probability...

We will start off by introducing ourselves. Today we are going to talk about relationship threats, which are challenges that have negative impacts and serious effects on relationships. Specifically, we will talk about relational transgression, interpersonal violence, and sexual coercion.. It’s important to learn about this topic because all of us have experienced it at some point. We also have done research outside from the textbook. (YAN) According to the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey, one out of ten women has been raped by an intimate partner, and one out of ten men has experienced physical violence. This pie chart shows the distribution of threats, and according to the survey, we can see that 42% of all threats come from physical violence and rape. Moving on to our first main point, relational transgression. Relational transgression takes place when fundamental relationship rules are violated. In romantic relationships, relational transgressions can include flirting...

...way the satire is effectively used evokes conversation about the topic through a humorous proposal. This thought-evoking Davis 2 satire brings to light the actual problems that are plaguing the country (in this case, poverty and the separation between the rich and the poor). Another type of comedy that brings out the actual problems being faced by the world is the television show “The Colbert Report”. This popular TV show, hosted by Stephen Colbert, is a parody of a newscast. He incorporates the world-wide news, as well as popular news-worthy events that are currently happening, and turns them into attention-grabbing parodies. One of Colbert’s skits discusses Nazi’s and common day neo-Nazis. People, in fact, did respond to this skit in a negative way and eventually was forced to ban it from his show. Although this skit was not allowed, it was still successful in...

...lean environment especially in the pull system. Versatile Buildings is a company that specializes in building custom garages, houses, farm buildings, and storage sheds. The raw materials used for these specialized buildings are mostly timber and steel. Versatile Buildings used to have a lot of inventory, tangled product flow and long manufacturing lead times. However this was before they converted to a lean environment and improved the efficiency of their operations. In the video they started off by showing a skit of a push system. This system was very inefficient and had design flaws in the overall production assembly. In the push system operators were constantly moving the product through their operation station. When a fault was introduced to a machine in step 1, the problem wasn’t seen until the product reached step 3. As a result there were 11 faulty parts that had to be scrapped. These 11 scrapped parts are a huge loss for any manufacturing plant. The second skit represented a pull system. It was clear that this system was much more effective for an assembly line. In this system operator 1 waits for operator 2 to take the part in the Kanban space. In other words the operator in station 1 doesn’t begin assembly on a new part until the operator in station 2 has begun working on the part in the Kanban space or the card is empty. It’s referred to as a pull system because you’re waiting for the operator in front of you to pull the part into their operation before you continue...

...NURSING ISSUES AND HOMELESS YOUTH PRESENTED BY MICHELLE ALLEN AND LORI UMENHOFER I. Research and Awareness A. Homeless youth face the same issues faced by children in the general population, but their issues are exacerbated by the circumstances inherent to their homeless status. B. As touched upon in the skit, some of the health care issues especially prevalent in the homeless youth population are psychosocial issues, nutrition issues, communicable diseases, dermatological disorders, respiratory disorders, dental health issues, sexual health issues, substance abuse issues, and issues related to medication adherence. II. Psychosocial Issues A. Multiple studies have identified the adverse effects of homelessness on children’s psychosocial health. 1. Kern Medical Center Study – In comparison to other poor children who have never been homeless, there is increased risk for depression, anxiety, behavioral problems, and academic problems in homeless children. B. Women who are homeless during pregnancy usually do not have access to prenatal care, are often undernourished, and are often substance abusers – all of which leads to low birth weight babies with neurobehavioral problems predisposing them to lower academic achievement and behavioral issues at higher rates than children who are not homeless. C. Studies such as those carried out by the Health Care for the Homeless Clinician’s Network show that, for children who are homeless with their families, under stimulation by...

...For my service-learning project, I worked with Alexander Porter and Victoria Mustovic to teach a class of third grade students about the immune system. We taught at the Cochranton Elementary School to a group of around twenty kids. We were in the gym to teach them so we had to use alternative ways to interact than presenting slides or drawing on a chalkboard. First, we went around to hear everyone’s name, to make them feel more appreciated and interactive. Vicki, Alexander, and I then performed a skit that was used to teach the students about the immune system in a visual and auditory way. During many points in the skit, the students were asked to repeat important points that we were making. After the skit, we asked questions about topics covered...
