...JIMENEZ, Isabela P. ENG 1 1AD-7 Ms. Claustro Filipinos have so much slang words or colloquial terms or sometimes we call it “salitang kalye”. It may be said and understood by many especially the teenagers because most of it started on the social networking sites or through text messaging or from the local TV shows. I honestly like these colloquial words because it shows how Filipino people are so creative in forming such new words that only the Filipinos understand. An example would be the phrase “Rak na” or sometimes “Rak na ituu”. I tried to search for its meaning and foreign people on the https://ph.answers.yahoo.com ask if it’s a Thai or a Filipino word. A Filipino answered his question saying “RaK na Itu, is a Filipino (slang) sentence meaning "Let's Rock This [to heighten the mood in music], Let's Do This [term], Roam And Kill [for gaming]", usually being used as a term when you and your friends have thought of doing something that can attain the goal of the majority of the group, such as happiness, a successful clash [for gaming], etc.” What the guy said is actually what it really means for me except for its meaning in gaming because I don’t play games. .”. I first heard it from my high school friends and I didn’t even asked what it means since I got it easily. I sometimes say it even up to now especially when I have to do something. I barely say it at home but I sometimes say it when I converse with my group of...

...Introduction Slang is an independent non -literary form of human language. Though scholars have argued There is no straight forward definition of slung due to its socio linguistic complexity factors surrounding its use and formation. (Eble, 1996). Different definitions of slang have describe it either on a positive or negative way. (cited in Partridge 1935:2) defined slang as a highly colloquial type of language that are considered below the level of speech of those regarded to be educated. Slangs words are used with a high degree of informality and vocabulary richness. Slang is used by specific group of people characterized by the territory they come from, subculture or age. Slang comes in a variety of ways one notable ways is through the subculture. The society keeps on changing as well as slang use. Youths are mostly fond of using and creating slang, they do so to show their own identity. Slang is a linguistic variety that cannot be separated from the social surrounding of the users Classification of slangs Slang can be classified into two that is specific and general slang. Specific slang is a slang used by a particular members of a group with the main aim of showing respect to other members of the group. They are mainly used by people who are in the same age but identified by the factors such as social status ,age , education or similar occupation. ...Examples of Slang Language Slang is a perpetual whirlwind of creativity among the young and avante garde. These groups are constantly breaking new ground with artistic expressions of their lives and the life around them. It’s impossible to be in a hip nightclub, or at a cutting edge art gallery, without the latest slang flying around like confetti. Why do people use slang? There are many answers as there are people who are continually reinventing English as we speak. Teenagers Are Experts One of the first signs of impending adolescence is the desire to put space between you and your parents’ generation, and the fastest way to do that is through the art of language. Teenagers develop their own idioms and expressions that make adults scratch their heads, trying to figure out what the slang means (and if it’s something they should be upset about.) For example: • Emo - If you’re “all emo,” it’s like being a drama queen (a slightly older expression.) Emo was a type of music that seemed to rip at the souls of adolescent angst. It frequently included wearing all black clothing, dying one’s hair pitch black, and having a complexion so paper white that it looked as if the teen had grown up in the basement. To be emo was to be perpetually depressed, moody, and emotional, and perpetually at odds with society (even if it was nothing more than a pose.) • My bad - If a teen has made a mistake, the phrase “my bad” is frequently employed as a cover. It means what it appears to mean: “I...

...Slang, informal, nonstandard words and phrases, generally shorter lived than the expressions of ordinary colloquial speech, and typically formed by creative, often witty juxtapositions of words or images. Slang can be contrasted with jargon (technical language of occupational or other groups) and with argot or cant (secret vocabulary of underworld groups), but the borderlines separating these categories from slang are greatly blurred, and some writers use the terms cant, argot, and jargon in a general way to include all the foregoing meanings. Origins of slang Slang tends to originate in subcultures within a society. Occupational groups (for example, loggers, police, medical professionals, and computer specialists) are prominent originators of both jargon and slang; other groups creating slang include the armed forces, teenagers, racial minorities, ghetto residents, labor unions, citizens-band radiobroadcasters, sports groups, drug addicts, criminals, and even religious denominations (Episcopalians, for example, produced spike, a High Church Anglican). Slang expressions often embody attitudes and values of group members. They may thus contribute to a sense of group identity and may convey to the listener information about the speaker's background. Before an apt expression becomes slang, however, it must be widely adopted by members of the subculture. At this point slang and jargon overlap greatly. If the subculture has enough contact with the mainstream...

...Slang has been around for quite a while in the Americas and has become an integral part of our society. We rely on colloquialisms for the sake of simplicity; it is the heart of each generation’s culture as it lays the basic foundation of language for each succeeding one. Slang truly is the way youth rebel and it helps establish an “emblem of tribe identity” within certain groups. Adult authorities have the power to pick and choose what children can wear or style themselves with. However, what is out of their control is kids’ use of slang words or listening to music containing slang even though they are allowed to because it is natural for them to become exposed to reality and to express their thoughts and feelings in a unique manner. Slang is indeed the “core element of youth culture” that disregards universal regulation....

...linguists have endeavoured to clearly define what constitutes slang.[1] Attempting to remedy this, Bethany K. Dumas and Jonathan Lighter argue that an expression should be considered "true slang" if it meets at least two of the following criteria:[1] It lowers, if temporarily, "the dignity of formal or serious speech or writing"; in other words, it is likely to be considered in those contexts a "glaring misuse of register." Its use implies that the user is familiar with whatever is referred to, or with a group of people who are familiar with it and use the term. "It's a taboo term in ordinary discourse with people of a higher social status or greater responsibility. " It replaces "a well-known conventional synonym". This is done primarily to avoid discomfort caused by the conventional synonym or discomfort or annoyance caused by having to elaborate further. Michael Adams remarks that "[slang] is liminal language... it is often impossible to tell, even in context, which interests and motives it serves... Slang is on the edge."[2] And while efforts like Adams' open slang up for discussion, introductory definitions like his and Partridge's "Slang To-Day and Yesterday" offer "little more than a sketch" of what slang is.[2] [3] Slang dictionaries, collecting thousands of slang entries, offer a broad, empirical window into the motivating forces behind slang.[4] While many forms of language may be considered "sub-standard", slang remains distinct from colloquial and jargon terms because...

...As an individual who regularly accesses the internet and social media, I can say that I am aware of the mainstream American slang terms used everyday. However, there are still some particular words that I have never heard of before. The term bleeding dry refers to taking away all the money from an individual. It would be used as, “The new computer software company taking my business and bleeding me dry!”. The final term I have never heard of before is dookie salad, meaning someone is unsatisfied with a certain situation. An individual can say, “Daniel already left. Dookie salad!”. The word york refers to the action of vomiting. Someone can use it as, “Phil had too much to drink, he yorked all over himself!”. Although I now know the definitions of these words, I don’t believe I will use them....

Slang can be divided into four different types; country slang, urban slang, gay slang and common slang. Country slang is used by those who are in the rural parts of a country, while urban slang is spoken by those from the city or by African-Americans. Gay slang is used by gays,...

...people and so are their meanings. As children, people learn to talk and which words to use to get their ideas across. As they mature they learn more complex ways of expressing thought. As language changes over time people have to adapt. Words not only change locally, but also learned some words take on an international meaning. Many words’ meanings has spread internationally and become a part of another culture’s language. As time progresses the meaning of certain words changes. Today the word “dude” is slang for a male. In the 1800s “dude” “referred to a dandy-ish sort of doofus” (Peters, 2010). It mocked a man for the way he dressed or spoke. The term began as a way to make fun of a person, but later took a different form in the west. It referred to “a non-westerner or city dweller who tours of stays in the west of the United States” (Peters, 2010). . In the 20th century, “dude” took on another meaning. The African American community turned the word into slang. It meant cool, or simply “the boys” or “fellas.” As the sixties approached the term became associated with a cool person and embraced by surfers. Many people can see “dude” gained momentum in movies such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Fast Times at Ridgemeont High, Wayne’s World, or Clerks. In some of these movies the word “dude” even took on an exclamatory position. The word “cool” has changed tremendously over time and taken on several parts of speech. The word can be a verb, noun, or adjective....

...Figurative Language versus Literal Language Professor Veronica S Critical Thinking – PHI 210 January 22, 2013 Figurative Language versus Literal Language Figurative language is writing or speaking where ‘figures of speech’ such as metaphors and similes freely occur (Oxford Reference, 2003) where as literal language is opposed to figurative it suggests the influence of the letter as a measure of strictness and rightness: the literal truth is seen as being true in a basic and absolute way. If something is done literally, a person follows instructions ‘to the letter’, without flexibility or imagination (Oxford Reference, 2003). In this paper several figurative language expressions will be defined and discussed by providing examples for each term, appropriate circumstances for using the expressions and when it might lead to misunderstanding. An idiom is an expression established in the usage of a language that is peculiar to itself either in grammatical construction (as no, it wasn’t me) or in having a meaning that cannot be derived as a whole from the conjoined meanings of its elements (as Monday week for “the Monday a week after next Monday”; many a for “many taken distributively”; had better for “might better”; how are you? for “what is the state of your health or feelings?”) (Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, 2002) Also an idiom doesn’t mean what its individual words mean. In Italian, “In the mouth of the wolf” is an idiom, it means “Good luck”, and “kick the bucket”...

...Good afternoon dear professors and dear colleagues! Today I have an opportunity to present to you the research, the designation of which is «Lexical analysis of the novel «On the road» written by Jack Kerouac». Trips, journeys, wanderings and youth are the main sources of inspiration for Jack Kerouac whose book has remained bestseller for more than 60 years. Buddhist, philosopher and travelling writer, not only wrote the book about hitchhiking, but also gave the name to the whole direction in literature and society, namely beat generation. Besides, the novel is characterized by autobiographical features since Jack Kerouac depicts the life of beat generation, the representor of which he was. From linguistic point of view, «On the road» is a unique example of spontaneous prose invented by Kerouac therefore it is an interesting material to research. Furthermore, little research has been undertaken to study the novel ‘On the Road’ as a linguistic phenomenon. The actuality of the theme of our research consists in research of the emotive prose as a linguistic prose, stylistic and lexical peculiarities of which are not investigated enough. The purpose of this study is to examine and analyze lexical and stylistic items used in novel ‘On the Road’ by Jack Kerouac. The tasks of our paper lie in description of stylistic characteristics of emotive prose, in detection and analysis of lexical and stylistic items in the novel. The object of the research is the novel ‘On the Road’ written...

...in which the words are used are written in an informal manner for example, "crab's arse my arse" , this style of language would not be appropriate for a children's TV programme or a documentary so it gives me the impression that this particular show is aimed towards people between the ages of 25 and 60. These words can also be linked to ideolect because the character that uses these words the most is Jim so i would say that it is a language style associated with that particular character which enables the audience to connect with that character and understand him. A second main feature i found used is slang with the words "mates" and "P.". Slang is a very informal language mainly exchanged between people who know each other which is why I think it is a very effective feature to use because the script is written for an acting family so the producers/authors may have used slang to engage and attract the audience and also to to allow them to connect and it takes and formal views away to create more of a humorous scene. Both of these words can link to abbreviation as well with "P." being an abbreviation of pence and "mates" being an abbreviation of friends. Another framework I came across in the extract is discourse and a big feature used throughout is high frequency turn taking, not once does anyone interupt, the conversation flows fluently although a lot of informal language is used there is still no interuptions, and with turn taking there is quite a few adjacency pairs for...

...Archaic words These words are no longer in everyday use or have lost a particular meaning in current usage but are sometimes used to impart an old-fashioned flavor to historical novels, for example, or in standard conversation or writing just for a humorous effect. Some, such as bedlam, reveal the origin of their current meaning, while others reveal the origin of a different modern word, as with gentle, the sense of which is preserved in gentleman. Some, such as learn and let, now mean the opposite of their former use. 1. Abroad-out of doors 2. Accouchement-birthing 3. Advertisement-a notice to readers in a book Obsolete. Words This label is attached to entry words and senses for which there is little or no printed evidence since 1755. A temporal label commonly used by lexicographers (that is, editors of dictionaries) to indicate that a word (or a particular form or sense of a word) is no longer in active use in speech and writing. 1. “bell, book, and candle” – the popes of old’s favoured way of excommunicating someone, but also a fancy way to intensify your retelling of screeching or railing at someone. 2. “with squirrel” – pregnant. 3. “balderdash” – once an adulterated wine, also an en mode way of saying that something is untrue.
