The year is 1865, June 19th, or if you will, Juneteenth. I am in my dining room just about to sit down for dinner. I am joined by several abolitionists who helped in the struggle to free slaves. Including Angelina Grimke a former slave owner from the south, William Lloyd Garrison a man with a strong Christian conscience, and Frederick Douglass a former slave. I am also joined by Thomas Ardon, a slave owner. I have invited these guests to hear and discuss their thoughts and opinions.

Me: Hello everyone! Welcome to my home! I am so glad you could all join me for dinner and this discussion on the abolition of slavery.

AG: I am happy to be here so we can talk about the cruel treatment of slaves and the prosperity that will come from the abolition of slavery.

FD: As …show more content…
AG: Precisely, these African Americans are human. They deserve to be treated as such, not animals.

Me: Absolutely! They deserve rights, all humans deserve the same rights, no matter their race.

TA: What on earth are you saying they deserve rights? Those filthy animals deserve nothing more than what they are given.

FD: That sir is where you are wrong African Americans are human and should be treated just like any other human.

WG: Slaves didn’t deserve the treatment they were given, now that they are free maybe people will see it our way. We had to speak up for those who couldn’t speak up for themselves.

FD: Now wait a second, African Americans can speak up for themselves, you white folk just don’t allow it. You did this to me for years, allowing me to tell my heart-wrenching story to help sell your case, but not to speak my mind, to say what I believed in.

WG: Well maybe I was wrong to restrain you but you didn’t even want the immediate abolition of slavery!

FD: I didn’t believe that immediate abolition was possible, the war was inevitable.

TA: You are exactly right there, these darned slaves wouldn’t have ever been freed if it weren’t for that blasted

...Constitution directly. However, slavery is mentioned and protected in the document, even though the term is never specifically used. The infamous three-fifths clause counted 0.6% of the slave population in allocating representation, which granted the South extra representation in the house. The Constitution also forbade Congress from condemning the Atlantic slave trade. Additionally, the Constitution granted the federal government the power to quell any local uprisings, which could, of course, include violent slave rebellions. If Northerners demanded the removal of any mention of slavery from the US Constitution, the South would only act negatively and the entire situation would be detrimental to the building...

...The voices of freedom that I chose was on the topic of slavery and what the word “freedom” meant. The Union and Confederacy used the same words but different meaning. In a letter, written on April 17, 1861, from Thomas F. Drayton to his brother Percival, an officer in the U.S. Navy, defends his support to the confederacy cause. He was a South Carolina plantation owner and ally for the confederacy succession. He explains that the confederacy is not fighting to defend slavery, instead, it is fighting for their own freedom. Abraham Lincoln was an United States president from the spring of 1861 to spring of 1865 when he was assassinated. He made an address to Sanitary Fair, Baltimore that discussed the different meanings of freedom on April 18,1864....

...him believing that reality and histroy should be dialectally veiwed, to his beliefs that only a large scale in an econimic system can bring about real change. His beliefs of communism and all other things became its own and is referred to as Marxism. Marxism is defined as the political and economic theories of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, later developed as the basis for communism according to Merriam online dictionary. Marx was influenced by many, its said that his ideas of how the structure of this society should be ran stemmed from the orginal philosophies of Georg Hegel. Hegel was once his professor, and I beleive Marx's strong politcal beliefs all started after hearing the views Hegel held close to him. Marx was bold, argumentative and very critical. Critical is a bit harsh but he got most of his points across through critique. According to an untitled article Marx was the first great user of critical method in social sciences and with this tool he'd pursue the job of sharing his strong deep rooted beliefs voiced in a philosophical way to ensure that the public thinks about what exactly is being said. Marx has many things published, such as the Communist Manifesto. He did a lot of explaining of communism and how things should be run because being ran that way could increase true change in our society. Marx believed in changing the economic stance of the society, would change the economic stratification of many individuals. Marx says that class struggles...

...English 311.01 (13471): The History of African-American Writing Fall 2015 Tuesday, Thursday 11:00-12:15 JR 244 Professor Nate Millsnathaniel.mills@csun.eduOffice hours: Tuesdays 1:00-3:30 and by appointmentSierra Tower 718 | Course Description / Objectives Through a historical survey of the work of major African-American writers from slavery to the present, this course will examine the defining features of African-American expression. The course is organized around a foundational question: what makes African-American literature African-American? Is it just a set of texts that happen to have been written by authors who identified as black in their respective historical moments? Are there distinct formal and thematic paradigms that unify these texts into a coherent literary tradition? What relation do black texts bear to other black texts, as well as to the Western canon? Are African-American texts necessarily “political,” by definition protesting the social and political marginalization of black people in America? Do African-American texts represent the particular experiences of African Americans, or do they (also?) address universal problems and experiences? The cultural, literary-formal, and political distinctiveness of African-American writing will thus be the guiding theme of this course’s rigorous, fast-moving survey. Additionally, students in 311 will acquire knowledge of the following: * The ways African-American...

Rhetorical Terms/Devices

...Rhetorical Terms/Devices Figurative language is the generic term for any artful deviation from the ordinary mode of speaking or writing. It is what makes up a writer’s style – how he or she uses language. The general thinking is that we are more likely to be persuaded by rhetoric that is interesting, even artful, rather than mundane. When John F. Kennedy said, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country” (an example of anastrophe), it was more interesting – and more persuasive – than the simpler, “Don’t be selfish.” Indeed, politicians and pundits use these devices to achieve their desired effect on the reader or listener nearly every time they speak. The stylistic elements in a piece of writing work to produce a desired effect related to the text’s (and author’s) purpose, and thus reveals the rhetorical situation. In classical rhetoric, figures of speech are divided into two main groups: Schemes — Deviation from the ordinary pattern or arrangement of words (transference of order). Tropes — Deviation from the ordinary and principal meaning of a word (transference of meaning). *Important Note: Words marked with an asterisk* are words for which it would be impossible for you to write 3 examples for your weekly vocabulary assignment. In those cases, please write only the definition, in your own words, and the rhetorical uses/effect of that device, or do what you are instructed to do under those words. Please mark these words that deviate...

...revise. DON’T FORGET TO PRINT, SIGN AND ATTACH THE “PLAGIATSHINWEIS”! First steps Many students neglect the preliminary work of the writing process, but if you give it sufficient attention the actual writing of your paper will be faster and more organized than if you just start writing. The most important thing is to be systematic in your approach. 1. Finding a topic Perhaps the most difficult part of any research paper is finding an adequate topic, formulating a title and making a coherent argument. Once you have decided on a topic or a title, which in literary studies will most likely involve a certain text, rephrase it as a question to guide your research. You should also think about the methodology you intend to apply to your analysis. • • • • 1 Start by reading your primary text closely. If you have access to an annotated edition of your chosen text, make good use of the materials this offers you. Read both the text itself and the additional material carefully whilst taking notes. This will be the basis for your subsequent research. Try to summarize and organize your findings systematically. Figure out which...

Use a black or blue pen. • Remember to complete the submission information on every page you turn in. Multiple-Choice Questions (1 hour) Section 1 consists of selections from prose works and questions about their content, form, and style. Questions 1-10. Read the following passage, from "The Yellow Wallpaper," by Charlote Perkins Gilman (1899) carefully before you choose your answers. You may refer to the passage as often as necessary while answering the questions. It is very seldom that mere ordinary people like John and myself secure ancestral halls for the summer. A colonial mansion, a hereditary estate, I would say a haunted house and reach the height of romantic felicity—but that would be asking too much of fate! Still I will proudly declare that there is something queer about it. Else, why should it be let so cheaply? And why have stood so long untenanted? John laughs at me, of course, but one expects that in marriage. John is practical in the extreme. He has no patience with faith, an intense horror of superstition, and he scoffs openly at any talk of things not to be felt and seen and put down in figures. John is a physician, and perhaps—(I would not say it to a living soul, of course, but this is dead paper and a great relief to my mind)—perhaps...

Over the last twenty-five years, the field of intercultural relations has developed some sophisticated methods for developing intercultural competence. Gone are the days when the only approach to an assignment abroad was “sink or swim.” And fast disappearing are the organizations who still say “the way we do it here is the way we do it everywhere.” It is now possible to prepare global managers and leaders to learn how to learn in new cross-cultural situations, thus speeding up their adaptability and improving their productivity. For experienced hands, the new methods allow them to share their own experience more effectively with the next generation...
