The question of slavery expanding or being terminated has been a question that has been asked all throughout the antebellum period. Yet, all through that period, it was never answered. Conflict between abolishing slavery, which was fought for by the Northerners and the preservation of slavery, fought for by the Southerners has spiked as time went on. Though, each plan that was designed to make a compromise between the two only seemed to aggravate them even more. For example, The WIlmot Proviso Act was shot down by opposing Southerners, the Compromise of 1850 infuriated both argumentative sides, and the Kansas Nebraska Act escalated sectional tensions. With every new act or establishment that came rolling our way, another crack …show more content…
When the sectional tensions between the North and South heated up, Illinois Senator, Stephen Douglas knew he would have to appeal to Southerners in some shape or form. His plan was to run for president and so with that he decided to propose the idea of organizing the land in the Louisiana Purchase into two territories “Kansas and Nebraska”. Though, since this land would be above the Missouri Compromise boundary, this meant slavery would not be permitted. So, to enlighten the Southerners he decided they would repeal the the Missouri Compromise boundary line and allow popular sovereignty to vote if the Kansas or Nebraska territories should hold slaves or not. With the support of Southern Democrats the Kansas Nebraska Act would infact become a law. This would send Southerns and Northerns racing towards Kansas to make sure the vote would go to their side. Blood would shed on Kansas because of the bickering between abolitionist and people supporting in favor of pro-slavery. Then they would settle in different areas of the land creating their own governments such as the Abolitionist which was is Topeka. Buildings were burned, protest were made, and people were killed. It was a barbaric manner, that got way too out of hands. The people had lost their patience in playing games with one another and hated the idea of just keep going back at each other. They were questioning on how long they could keep this up and when it would initially get better or worse. For many this would be the last straw.
