During the seventeenth century slavery took act in America into the eighteenth century, which is portrayed in Myne Owne Ground. The book is centered on Anthony Johnson who was the first African America servant to be brought to Jamestown, Virginia. Johnson was sold to an American planter, Bennett who owned a tobacco farm as an indentured servant. As stated in Myne Owne Ground, “Anthony appeared as a “servant,” and while some historians argue that many early blacks were indentured servants rather than slaves, Anthony seems to have a slave.” I believe Johnson was a slave rather than a servant.
