A topic that caused a big trouble for the people of the 1800s was slavery. Slavery had been a significant part of culture way before America was “discovered” and was considered “an age-old tradition” (Slave Revolts). For this reason, Americans, especially in the south, owned numerous slaves whom they considered their property. They would acquire them after they were taken captive and force them to do all the work for no benefits except their life. In fact, their owners took even their life as they were beaten on a daily basis and killed. Despite the budding efforts to end slavery by some abolitionists, slavery was too popular in the south. Slaves weren’t given the rights that the American citizens had and were treated not as people but property.
