...It was just a normal Tuesday. Dad had dropped me off after our usual stop at Donuts & More. Buffy greeted us at the door, where I said my goodbye. They boys wanted to watch E.T.. Again. So, as usual, I went with Buffy to do laundry in her dark, dingy, musty smelling basement. Buffy was my babysitter, and I always loved going over to her house. There was always something to do, and even when there wasn’t she still managed to find something. We were never bored. There was, however, part of going to her house that I always dreaded. The dog. I don’t remember what his name was, but he was a full grown golden retriever, and I hated every second I spent near him. He was the devil in dog form, except I was the only one who could see it. We got to the basement, and I sat at the bottom of the stairs as Buffy began to put laundry in the washing machine. The stairs were always cold. The gold metal that lined the edges always felt freezing to the touch, the result of being in the dark, dingy basement. After a while, the cold stop bothering me, my body slowly adapting to the coldness. Laundry was always done seconds after I started to begin to warm again. “Let’s go.” Buffy would say, and I would follow her up the stairs. Something was different today, though. Devil Dog was waiting at the top of the stairs…. I was almost to the top of the stairs, as a little kid crawling up the stairs always felt like it took years. Two steps from the top I stood up. I would later regret...

...The Spear Maker The Spearmaker moved with a controlled urgency. The girl’s moaning had quieted so she must be between contractions. Where she came from he didn’t know but for once he wished he lived closer to the neighboring village. “There is no time for this”, he thought as he opened random cupboards looking for a clean cup—the girl was thirsty! This was an untimely distract, he needed to be in the Sun Room to make the final preparations for his spears. The moment he had been preparing for all year was just upon him: Dragon’s Sun would arrive at sunrise and he still had so much to do. Finally he found a ladle lost in a pile of tools on the table. His home was filthy and stunk of sweat and iron. Lately he’d had no time to waste on cleaning because he had been putting the finishing touches on his spears to prepare them for the arrival of the Dragon’s Sun. His house was more a workshop than a home anyway. It sat nestled in at the base of Dragon Mount beside the clear running mountain river unimaginatively named, Coldstream and was built over an open crevasse in the earth that constantly bubbled with molten lava. The fumes that spilled forth reeked of sulfur and the deep unknown and probably would have killed most men, but the Spearmaker was not most men. He had built his forge around the bubbling crevasse and the heat from the earth’s belly allowed him to shape iron to his will. The river, flowing next to house, provided the pure water in which he tempered his steel...

...Changing Roles. The role of woman in vampire literature has changed significantly over the decades. Works expanding from the traditional Bram Stokers Dracula to more modern work as well-known as Twilight. Lucy in Dracula was portrayed as being “slender with large brown eyes and full lips”, she was considered a “damsel”. Her character became the stereotype for the females in novels that followed. In Buffy the Vampire Slayer the role of women changed. The female was no longer the “damsel” but now was the warrior. In the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, by Laurell K Hamilton, Anita is one thing the vampires fear most that is why she is called the “Executioner”. But there are many similarities in the women of classic and modern day literature and film as well. The role of women in the Victorian era were to be virginal and innocent, or else they were a mother and wife. If she was not either of these she was considered impure and dirty. Bram Stoker Dracula is a prime example of this system. In future writing women have gotten a chance at significant change. Now women can be the slayer, the persuader, and the enforcer. Women have grown in brains and brawn. The main female character in Dracula, found him in his sleep and during a period of time Dracula changes Lucy into an independent woman. According to one of the prevailing interpretations of the novel, Dracula acted as a catalyst for the female desire. Woman’s sex drive, as it was believed in the Victorian Era, could not exist on its own...

...Khaled Aldehneh Professor Cortese Oct 25th 2015 Final Draft Buffy the Vampire Slayer Society has many ideas about proper behaviors regarding gender roles. Over time, it is obvious the rules and expectations made up by society regarding proper male and female behavior has become very different. Males have to live up to the standards of having a good career and living up to strong goals to reach it. Males are always seen as strong and tough while females are known for their feminine behaviors and softness—the least capable to qualify for tough jobs. “Like all sciences and all valuations, the psychology of women has hitherto been considered only from the point of view of men.” (Karen Horney). In Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the Director David Solomon challenges gender roles in society by empowering the woman, and challenges traditional ideas...

...In Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, written by Seth Grahame-Smith, the author uses much explicit and implicit rhetoric language. This fiction tale is set in the time period of the civil war. The years of one of the most remembered president, Abraham Lincoln. But there’s a twist, in this fiction novel, Mr. Lincoln fights for your freedom, not from politics, but from vampires. He is the vampire hunter. As a young adult, Lincoln and a friend travel down the Mississippi River to New Orleans on a flatboat to sell a number of goods. Here Lincoln's life is changed forever after he witnesses a slave auction. Lincoln follows a slave buyer and his new slaves back to their plantation and discovers to his horror that the buyer is a vampire. The slaves are to be used not for labor but for food. Lincoln writes in his journal his belief that vampires will continue to exist in America as long as they can easily buy their victims in this manner. To end slavery is to end the scourge of vampires. On pages 145-147, the author describes Abraham and a few men hired by him to take a trip to New Orleans to deliver some goods. They first travel through the Sangamon River; Smith describes it as a “far cry” from the “mighty missisp”. Stating that it was compared to the Mississippi river as a creek of a stream. Then he goes into more detail describing it as a troubled body, leading to the “forgiving” Illinois river. They later get through the river and make it to their destination. Smith stated...

...Biully Character Sketch Based on the book “Raising Dragons” This book is about a teenage boy by the name of William Bannister who gradually starts to realize that his breath is getting hotter and hotter. By the time he is in high school, his breath is so hot, he sets off the fire alarm. The principal, one of the long lines of dragon slayers going back to the time of king Arthur realized that he has a pupil that has dragon blood. The story is about his struggles, victories, defeats, gains, losses, and friendship. His first character trait that I realized was his kindness. He demonstrated that in Chapter 3. “ Right after school, Billy was walking back home when he saw a little boy being picked on by some bully in high school. He stopped, frozen for a second, wondering what would happen if he helped the little kid. Then he thought what would happen if he didn’t. he dropped his backpack and his books and rushed to the little kid’s aid. When he got close enough, he yelled and said, “why don’t you stop picking on him? He is half your size.” The bully then picked the kid up by the hair “this little squirt?” Boiling with rage, Billy opened his mouth to say something, but words didn’t come out. Fire sprayed the high schooler and he dropped the kid and ran away, with his hair smoking.” That was a great demonstration of his kindness to the kid, and the bravery to stand up to the bully. Another character trait that I noticed was his forgiveness. “ When Billy got home he asked to talk...

...tricks, God of travel, trade, and thievery. Guider of dead souls to the Underworld Son of Maia, son and personal herald of Zeus I hear of your stories, and it brings me laughter and joy. Herald of the gods, let me reminisce of your past. Sharp eyed Hermes, son of Zeus, was sent by his father to the region of Argolis in the Peloponnese, Sent to rescue his father’s lover, Io the nymph, banished by the jealous Hera, wife of Zeus. Io was guarded by a hundred-eyed giant, Argos Panoptes. Hermes, cunning and swift, distracted Argos with his music, and assassinated the mighty giant with his sword. Thus, Hermes earned the name Argeiphontes, Slayer of Argos. Oh sharp-eyed Hermes, another tale I recant. The story of a woman comes to mind. She was created by Hephaestus, son of Hera, as a gift for Epimetheus. Hermes, Slayer of Argos, provided her the power of speech, putting in her, lies and crafty words, gifted to her a shameful mind and deceitful nature. After all the gods had gifted attributes to this woman, Hermes bequeathed a name to her, symbolizing all her gifts: Pandora. Then Hermes, god of transportation, delivered this first woman to Epimetheus. Her curiosity was ultimately the bringer of all evils of mankind. Farewell, Hermes, who brings us luck, forever continue your cunning and...

...Semih BOZ 21102153 Section: 5 ABSTRACT One of the discussion topics of music world is the relation between heavy metal music and religions. It is generally thought by non-authority people that heavy metal is music of Satanism. This remains as a prejudice, because the truth is different from what is thought of. The early times metal bands are even conservative and they have nothing to do with Satan in terms of religion. But most of the metal bands used satanic elements in lyrics, in music or on the stage. However, the intension of it is to attract listener’s attention. On the other hand, there is a small group in Norway actually worshipping Satan. In spite of the fact that they are in small numbers, their big actions made people talked about themselves. WHAT IS THE RELATION BETWEEN HEAVY METAL AND RELIGION? Heavy metal is a music genre which has very hardcore sound and brutal theme in terms of lyrics. It covers the issues like life, death religion love betrayal etc. It is generally associated with black color and heavy metal bands seem very tough wearing black and silver stuff. This is some kind of requirement to be a metal band, because this music deals with the issues which are not mentioned explicitly by any other genres but heavy metal, then that music is something strong and brave. Therefore, who makes that kind of music should appear in the same way. If and only if, they ought to have a strong theme. This strong theme comes from the music which is made by powerful electric...
