...Obstructive Sleep Apnea For many people, a night’s sleep consisting of tossing, turning, and snoring is relatively normal, and most think nothing of it. But for some people, it is more severe than just restless sleep, it actually is a potentially life threatening disease called Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Someone who is suffering from OSA has blocked airways while sleeping, and they actually stop breathing during their sleep. Being aware of what Obstructive Sleep Apnea is, knowing the signs and symptoms to look for, learning who is more susceptible to this disease, acknowledging how it would be diagnosed, being aware of its precursors, and understanding the available treatments, are all things that should be assessed and should be taken seriously....

Sleep Apnea

...Sleep Apnea and Cardiovascular Disease Snoring is a common disorder that affects millions of people around the world. Snoring occurs during sleep and most people who snores do not realize that they snore, unless told by others who hear them produce a snoring sound. Even though normal snoring is not dangerous to human health, having repeated breathing stops during the snoring process can be life threatening to the snorer. According to the American Heart Association (2012) study, having repeated breathing stops during the snoring process is dangerous and can result in the development of cardiovascular problems and even death. This condition is known as sleep apnea. In this respect, an individual with sleep apnea experiences repeated breathing stops for as many as thirty times in an hour when asleep. Such episodes are dangerous for the snorer since it increases the risk of developing heart failure, high blood pressure, stroke, and arrhythmia. Research shows that one in every five people suffers from sleep apnea. America, in particular, has one of the highest incidences of people with the disease. According to Lettieri (2010), about 15 million adults suffer from obstructive sleep apnea in America. Introducing a Nursing Procedure

...Procedures A doctor asked me to come up with a procedure for the assessment and treatment of “Sleep Apnea in Adults”. There is wide variety of factors that I would have to consider in an attempt to write up and apply a new protocol or procedure: 1. Would this be within my scope of nursing? There are many resources to find information on my standards of practice. These resources include a variety of nursing organizations (including statewide, national and international), education institutions (including community colleges and universities), and my state’s Board of Nursing. Basically, I would ask myself if I have had the education, skills, and experience to properly assess and treat adults with Sleep Apnea. 2. How simple or complex should this procedure be? Will it be a simple questionnaire with a list of simple explanations of the treatments that I could give to my patients and let them fill (it) out or will it be a tool to be used by other medical professionals? This will determine how much and how thorough my research will be. Will I do comparative studies on other researcher’s work and studies, on the detection (screening with questionnaires and/or tools and procedures for diagnosing), and treatments (weight-loss programs, CPAP, MAD, surgery, etc…). Should I do studies of patient outcomes (short-term and/or long-term)? There is an abundance of educational resources to use for research. 3. How will I format it? Will it be something that I will want to send to nursing organizations...

Day-to-Day Stress

...Day-to-Day Stress Omar R. Hameen GEN/200 May 17, 2011 Barbara Alston Day-to-Day Stress In the following paper I would like to talk about a problem that causes stress my daily life. I will describe how to gather information to help me solve this problem and where the information can be obtained. In this paper I will talk about my experiences and how I deal various forms of stressors at home and in social settings. Daily stress Stress is a term used by many, is severly misunderstood, and often used to describe a negative condition or emotional state. It is our biological way of dealing with sudden changes in our life. The biggest stressor for me is fatigue.   Most days, my morning starts around 10 a.m.   By 11 a.m., I’m hurrying to the store to grab an energy drink then back home to work on school assignments and apply for jobs online.   At 12 a.m. I start my “work day”, which typically requires cleaning, preparing my daughter for school, and taking care of any outside work that needs to be done.   I usually find myself leaving home at 5 p.m. and heading to pick up my daughter from daycare.   Whether we go to the park, play some type of sports in the yard, or go on a bike ride; I spend the next 3 hours running around behind my 4 year old daughter, using my last bit of stored energy. When our playtime is done we head inside to do her school work and other learning activities.   Spending family time is important, so usually its dinner and a movie until...

Sleep Disorder

...Development Abstract This paper will list two published medical research articles on Adolescent Sleeping Disorders. Sleeping disorders plague people and most have no idea that they even have the disease. Sleeping is the most important function your body has to cope with injury and stress. We need sleep to give our bodies a chance to heal themselves, flush out impurities in our digestive track or blood stream, and to rest vital organs. Sleep is needed to replenish after daily physical activity. In young adults, sleep will allow your body to release growth hormones that affect the bones, tissue, and new red blood cells (Gavin, Mary L., MD. "KidsHealth." Sleep Problems in Teens. Kids Health). Teens and adolescents spend one third of their day sleeping. Meaning by the age of 15, you will have spent about five years of your life asleep. Most adolescents need right around nine-and-a-half hours of sleep each night (Ransohoff, Katie. "Sleep and Sleeping Disorders."). Surveys conducted show that most adolescents get right around six to seven hours on the average. If you do not get enough sleep, you may experience some of the symptoms of sleep deprivation. Some of these symptoms of sleep deprivation are: • Falling asleep in class • Irritability • Difficulty waking up in the morning • Difficulty concentrating • Depression after prolonged sleep deprivation Most people think that sleep is a time where nothing happens and your...
