...kids to not play it too safe on the playground, it teaches them how to be well-rounded people and conquer their fears, anxieties, and panics in life. When I was a child, I was always climbing and swing on things, and I would fall, get scratches, and get back up to do it again. I would sometimes cry, because it would hurt too much; however, I kept climbing and swinging. If I had stop climbing and taking those daredevil risks, I would not conquer my future risks in life. It is like the story of David and Goliath. David was only a child in Saul’s army. He was tired of the giant, Goliath, mocking God and taunting the people of God. He gain courage and remained courageous through his life by standing up to Goliath and defeating him with “a sling shot and five smooth stones in his pocket” (Samuel). Just like David conquered his giant, children who are allowed to be kids and take risks can conquer their giants and become courageous adults. While courage is a great start, allowing kids to take on danger and uncomfortable tasks builds confidence and character to face any adversity and believe that great change can happen. In the Book of Genesis, Noah was building an ark for the great flood that was coming forewarned by God (Noah's Ark). Instead of doubting God and being afraid to do the abnormal, Noah built his ark and waited on God to do the...

...manager and foreman saying the machine was maintained satisfactorily, who takes responsibility to an unfortunate injury? The table saw is one of the most commonly seen and used tools in the power-tool industry. These tools are dangerous enough to have their own specialized accident litigators. The Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that “there is an average of about 10 finger amputations a day just from table saws used by consumers” (O’Donnell, 2011). These accidents account for about 67,000 recorded injuries every year and costing an approximate 2.1 billion in medical expenses yearly. The current safety technology on saw blades includes a plastic cover for the blade that is designed to protect users from rotating blade; this plastic cover has proven to be ineffective. Although most injuries occur when consumers come into contact with the blade, these consumers remove the...

Sir Azer Avilius “Must be at least five thousand septims in here” said the boss “Pretty good find eh, boss” said the one who found it. “Yes it was, we’re leaving, Ognolf, let’s go,” the boss called to the man he left at the corpses. He got no response, he turned back and saw Ognolf was dead, a young redguard man stood over his corpse, his two curved blades drawn and bloody, his clothing was simple cloth pants and vest, with leather bracers and a leather belt, and dirty gray cloth covered the bottom half of his face. “What the?” said one of the bandits, the man stood over Ognolf silent then he turned his gaze at the three of them. “Is this what you’ve become Layne, a simple bandit?” said the man, his question was directed at the leader of the bandits. “Layne?” said the bandit wielding the bow, it was drawn and ready “It doesn’t matter kill him” said the boss. “Look at his clothes, he’s a student from the Valley of Blades,” said the dunmeri bandit The student wore the Valley school’s basic uniform, it was light and breathable for training, barely suitable for the winter, and not at all suitable for open warfare. The mask covering his face was less a mask and more of a conveniently placed rag. The archer loosed an arrow at the student, He dodged it effortlessly. “A student, eh, time for a lesson” said the dunmer bandit, he drew his sword and charged, running past his boss...

...Knives Knife blades are made using low carbon steel. The initial shaping of a knife is done through forging or blanking. When forging, the blade material is heated to a high temperature or forging temperature in a forge and shaped with a hammer on an anvil to achieve the desired shape, often to near final dimension, where very little stock removal, if any, is required to finish. Steel can be folded either to form decorative pattern welded steel or to refine raw steel, or as the Japanese call it, tamahagane. Grain size is kept at a minimum as grain growth can happen quite easily if the blade material is overheated. In a mass production environment, or in a well-equipped private shop, the blanking process is used to make "blade blanks." This can be achieved by a number of different methods, depending upon the thickness of the material and the alloy content of steel to be cut. Thinner cross section, lower alloy blanks can be stamped from sheet material. Materials that are more difficult to work with, or jobs that require higher production volume, can be accomplished with water jet cutters, lasers or electron beam cutting. These two lend themselves towards larger custom shops. Some custom knife makers cut their blanks from steel using a metal-cutting band saw. Knife makers will sometimes contract out to a shop with the above capabilities to do blanking. For lower production makers, or lower budgets, other methods must suffice. Knife makers may use many different methods to profile...

...Holly Johnson Mrs. Ulrey English 12 10 March 2011 Vampires: Fact or Fiction? When the word “vampire” comes up in a conversation an immediate thought that comes to mind is Twilight. The Twilight series has made the world of vampires and werewolves a teenage girls greatest fantasy. To some, the idea of having a mythical creature fall madly in love with you is romantic, but what if vampires aren’t actually mythical creatures? What if they are real, human like killers who have a taste for human blood? How can a human being make up something so vile, it almost seems like it somehow has to be based off of a real life situation, or maybe the imagination of early humans, due to boredom, led to the creation of this creature. Is this doomed to be a mystery forever? We may never know who came up with the first vampire story. What we do know is the “vampire tales originated in Eastern European and Balkan countries, such as Hungary, Romania, Greece, and Albania” (Crawford 2). People during the late 1600’s until the early 1800’s did not take vampire hunting as joke like people would today. They were actually very serious about it and vampire hunters were considered extremely important. One could not just become a vampire hunter but instead had to be born with a special gift, such as clairvoyance. Only males could be born with clairvoyance, which is basically a sixth sense and allows you to see vampires. Since only few were able to be vampire hunters they “commanded handsome...

...audience he will then preform some mumbo jumbo magic stuff like saying some words or waving a wand. Then he will casually block the first assistants feet from view by either blocking it with another miscellaneous prop for a moment or by rotating the box, this gives his first assistant enough time to pull her feet in and the second assistant to poke her feet out, wearing the same shoes of course, the magician then grabs the saw blade and makes a cutting motion through a pre cut line in the box. Then the magician will split the box in half revealing the middle and amazing the audience even more. Then he closes the box does whatever he does to cover the legs and then opens up the box to show that he did not actually in fact cut his assistant in half. The crowd then cheers out of amazement and the magician makes loads of money after they go home and tell all their friends what they saw. ...In the sci-fi story “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep”, author Philip K. Dick introduces to his readers a futuristic religion based around a very common human emotion, empathy. Empathy plays the biggest role in the book through the global religion known in the novel as Mercerism. The practice of Mercerism centers on a piece of technology known as the empathy box. Users of the empathy box will take this technology by it handles which in turn infuses them into a type of physiological virtual experience. One of the experiences showcases the struggles of a mysterious man named Mercer and his journey up a mountain. Mercer’s journey up the mountain is met with hardship as unidentified bystanders would toss rocks at him as he attempts to ascend to his destination. Mercer would repeatedly fall to the bottom of the mountain but resume to the repeat process of reaching the top. Characters in the book also experience acts of enlightenment with Mercer where they are taught or told something by him that builds their character in the real world. Towards the end of the story, character Rick Deckard seems to have reached a point of enlightenment when he was able to experience the fusion with mercer in the real world without the use of the empathy box. It was then when Rick realized that Mercerism wasn’t just a false religion meant to mind trick people into becoming subordinates. The interesting thing about the empathy box is that not only are you watching this tragedy of Mercer unfold in front...

...science fiction films we can’t help mentioning Metropolis and Blade Runner. Made over 50 years apart from each other, both films address the problems that people living in the present foresaw in the future and the other of which is concerned with machines’ effect on human beings. Both films are quite visually stunning and attention grabbing and they are good examples of how science fiction movies have changed over time with the evolution of technology. Undoubtedly, these two films exhibit a gorgeous technological world and tell us a myth of future similarly and differently. In Metropolis, the workers depicted in the film have to live in poverty and work under very dangerous situations underground. The background blending of the two environments demonstrates a surrealistic environment and two contrasting atmospheres in the movies. The film Metropolis is set in the year 2026, in the extraordinary Gothic skyscrapers of a corporate city-state. In spite of it being a black and white old movie the director describes a magnificent vision of future world filled with high-rise buildings. It is a simple world, consisting of two classes--the pampered citizens of the surface and the workers who belong underground. The environment on the surface is super modern while the underground is crowded and shabby. This easy setting makes the story line clearer and the visually inspired, action-packed pictures were hits of that year. Blade Runner depicts a dystopian Los Angeles in 2019, in which genetically...
