Ethical Speaking Analysis

...I once listened to a speech where ethics were involved that affected me as a listener. It was an informative speech cautioning smokers to smoke in designated areas only. Although I am not a smoker, there were times that the speaker alienated smokers. The speaker stated that for the second time in three months, this facility suffered a fire in close proximity to a building. The first fire was caused by the careless disposal of a cigarette butt and the second fire is still officially under investigation by the fire department; however, preliminary findings point to the exact same cause - careless disposal of a cigarette butt in an area outside a designated smoking area. The callous disregard of smoking regulations on the part of a minority of employees represents a direct threat to the safety and livelihoods of other employees. I cannot and will not continue to turn a blind eye to these threats. My primary responsibilities revolve around the safety and health of our valued employees, and the successful execution of our vital work. He went on to say he would not permit the behavior of a few careless or malicious people who violate our existing smoking policies and regulations to jeopardize the workforce and the mission. For those who continue to ignore the existing policies and regulations governing smoking on these premises will not continue to be warned. If someone is caught breaking the rules, there will be no verbal or written counseling. He or she will be subject to...

Smokers

...Smokers In some countries, people are no longer allowed to smoke in many public places and office buildings. Do you think this is a good rule or a bad rule? Use specific reasons and details to support your position. The question about whether people should be allowed to smoke in public places is the one that is open for debate. All people can be devided on two groups: smokers and not smokers. Smokers agree that they do not benefit the society by smoking, but think that they should have some special places in office buildings or public places where they can smoke. However, others believe that smokers should not be allowed to smoke in any places except their own apartments. Personally, I completely agree with the last opinion. For the following reasons, which I will mention bellow, I think that smokers should not contaminate the air other people breathe. The first reason for this is that smokers not only damage their own health but actually cause damage to the health of others. Scientists say that people who do not smoke, but regulary breathe in the smoke of cigarettes, so-called "passive smokers", poison their health more then smokers themselves. For example, when I was a student I lived with the roommate who was a chain smoker. First I did not know what to do, I smelled that smoke everywhere and I could not breathe freely, but in a few weeks I got used to it. Now I think that I was a real smoker because of the fact that I regulary breathed in so much smoke. Second...

Smokers

...“recovering” smoker myself, I could only respond with a loud “NO KIDDING!” One thing the doctors did not seem to realize, however, was that quitting is easier for some people than for others. In my experience I have found three types of cigarette addicts: the Ultra Light Addict, the Regular Addict, and the Unfiltered Addict. My Aunt Jessie is a prime example of the first type of addict, The Ultra Light. (Her brand of choice is Virginia Slims Ultra Light.) People who visit Aunt Jessie’s house might never know she smokes. The only clues are the clean, shiny crystal ashtrays carefully placed around her home. Even though it’s her home, she always asks permission of a visitor before lighting up. When she does smoke around a nonsmoker, she holds the cigarette well away from her companion and blows the smoke behind her. Aunt Jessie smokes like Barbara Stanwyck used to smoke in the old movies: elegantly, daintily, thoughtfully. Sometimes I wonder, though. I mean, I just know that as soon as her visitor leaves, Aunt Jessie hauls out a huge plastic ashtray from beneath the kitchen sink and starts puffing away, one cigarette after the other, stopping only to spray Lysol to disguise the smell. The second type of addict- the Regular- doesn’t bother with Lysol (although he will lower a car window if asked). I know this because my father is a Regular. His brand of choice is Pall Mall, but he’ll do with Winston’s if necessary-just so long as they’re not menthol. Dad is not a heavy smoker. He’s just...

...smoking a user right, should not be infringed on by others whom understand the harsh illnesses caused by inhaling smoke directly or second hand. I strongly disagree with this point of view that asking someone to stop smoking whether in public or private are to be considered persons who hates people(misanthrope is someone who hates people). If the writer and can say smokers have the right to die from smoking if they chose then the same is true of non-smokers right to live without illness from cigarette smoke. Signs are placed in public areas as a reminder of the dangers of cigarette smoke not as a method of punishment to the smoker. If we were not educated to the dangers of second hand smoke as well as the effects on the smoker themselves there would not be any need for no smoking signs. However smoking is regarded (if too many smokers heed the Surgeon General’s warning and stop smoking, they will live to long and break the budget.) it is a fact the cost of treating a person whom has been smoking and has an illness related to cigarette smoke has cost the none smoker and smoker a great deal of needless expense. Living a healthy life is more cost effective even if a person’s life span is extended. There is less expense spent on research for treatments to curb cancers directly related to ingestion of cigarette...

A Smokers World

...Janet Bean English Comp I 5/5/13 What Your Mother Was Afraid Of A Smokers World Imagine yourself walking out of class on a fall day, it is not too warm and it is not too cold, you could even say its perfect temperature. It’s a Friday and your feeling good, the sun beats down on your face and you see all of your friends standing around outside of the union doors. You approach them as they laugh and converse amongst themselves. When you finally get there they give you a warm greeting and you realize you are out of cigarettes. You proceed to ask for one and as your friend is pulling you out a cigarette he proceeds to talk trash and give you a hard time for not having any. As you put it to your mouth you realize you do not have a lighter. When you ask for a lighter, you get a specific response “Oh you want me to smoke it for you too?” As you light the cigarette, you begin to inhale and feel the thick, deliciously deadly smoke enter your lungs. You feel the burning sensation all over you. As you continue to ingest the horrible gas, you and your friends continue to talk and laugh. Then you slowly begin to realize that smoking is about more than just an addiction. It is about bringing your friends together. Smokers can identify themselves with other smokers and find similar interests; it’s like a sports team, except not nearly as healthy. In this essay I will allow readers to understand and identify that smokers are not just people they are complete strangers bound together by an...

A Comparison Between the Fitness of Smokers and Non-Smokers

...Title: A comparison between the fitness of smokers and non-smokers. Introduction: When smoking tobacco, the blood vessels are being constricted (why???Mention how this happens), which raises the blood pressure and causes hypertension that can lead to heart attacks. Consuming tobacco furthermore damages the lungs and its capacity. (say how it damages lung capacity and what effects it has on the human, when the lung capacity is damaged.) With this experiment I want to investigate how smoking affects the fitness of the human body focusing on the blood pressure and the capacity of the lungs. Research Question: How does smoking affect fitness, in terms of lung capacity and blood pressure? Hypotheses: I believe that the lung capacity of smokers will be lower and the blood pressure will be higher, compared to the lung capacity and blood pressure of the non-smokers. This is due to the effect tobacco has on the lungs and the blood pressure. As mentioned already, smoking, and with it consuming tobacco, causes the blood vessels to …(mention briefly again what happens to blood vessels and lungs to verify ur hypothesis) Material: • Blood pressure measuring instrument • lung capacity measuring instrument Method: The first step of this experiment is to measure the lung capacity, blood pressure and pulse of each of the 3 smokers and 3 non-smokers before they exercise so that we will be able to see how the initial value for their lung capacity and blood pressure...

Confessions of a Quitting Smoker

...Confessions of a Quitting Smoker 2011 marks the 39th revolution of the planet around the sun while I remain conscious of this bewildering existence. I will thence have another year to go before I slide into the 40s. The forties; I’m not even sure what happened to the thirties, and already I have to learn to write a new digit. In those quiet moments of the morning when introspection is possible, I have been able to confirm that I remain as spirited, indomitable, adventurous, exciting and curious as I was when I was 18. So I figure that in order to avalanche through the forties, health is going to be an incredibly important attribute in my existential makeup. My knees creak when I walk down the stairs. They ache when they stay bent for longer than 10 minutes. My left shoulder is recalcitrant on the good days, and frozen stiff exactly when I need it most. I have never played tennis before, nor used a bow and arrow. So how on Earth did I get a left tennis elbow and a right archer’s elbow? It appears that I have fallen into a terrible trap. I believe the old saying goes something like, “you won’t know you miss it till after it’s gone”. My health; my vigour. I am losing it. But I still love the great outdoors! I like to kayak. I like to run in the rain; skip rope. Let my whole shoulder drop off when I am paddling. Never mind, it’ll be worth it. But in all my times doing what I love most, one annoying event keeps taking place that mars the experience. My lungs. Oh, my god-forsaken...

Theory to Help a Smoker

...Emotion and Motivation Carley Boisclair Mr. Dover Many individuals have a nasty habit that they wish they did not have. For instance, my client has been a chronic smoker for the past seven years of her life. She never really considered it a problem until she fell pregnant. Her doctor informed her that continuing her habit would prove extremely fatal to her baby's development. Therefore, she has seeked my help in understanding the best way to help her quit. The client enlightened me with a little background information, telling me that the majority of her family have always smoked cigarettes around her, even as a small child. Therefore, when she was offered a cigarette in high school, she saw no problem with it because she was completely use to it. She explains that it seems as though it was inevitable that she would become a smoker just like the rest of her family. However, even then, smoking was not a habit to my client. It all first started when her father passed away from a car accident right after she moved away for college. With her one idol gone, she felt she had no one to turn to, so she turned to cigarettes. My client has been smoking ever since. While my client wants to quit in order to save her baby as well as herself, she feels as though cigarettes are a huge part of her life now. Therefore, we must explore many different routes in order to help my client successfully overcome her distructive habit. To begin with, classical conditioning can explain my client's...

The Social Norms of Cigarettes and Hookah Smokers

...cigarettes and hookah smokers My target article of choice is (Roohafza et al., 2013) the research of the social norms with Iranian young cigarette and hookah smokers. The first introduction to either use of cigarette and hookah smokers accrues in their youth; continuing into maturity. The toxins within the tobacco smoke causes the surge in childhood illness and premature death. Consequently, the struggle to avoid or cut back on the frequency of smoking should be mindful of the younger age groups. Moreover, identifying the factors of smoking beginning in the youth is essential to accomplishing in tobacco regulations and prevention measures. Behavioral Response of Smokers After Quitting

...CHAPTER 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND I. Introduction The use of tobacco continues to be a major cause of health problems worldwide. There is currently an estimated 1.3 billion smokers in the world, with 4.9 million people dying because of tobacco use in a year. If this trend continues, the number of deaths will increase to 10 million by the year 2020, 70% of which will be coming from countries like the Philippines. (The Role of Health Professionals in Tobacco Control, WHO, 2005). The World Health Organization released a document in 2003 entitled Policy Recommendations for Smoking Cessation and Treatment of Tobacco Dependence. This document very clearly stated that as current statistics indicate, it will not be possible to reduce tobacco related deaths over the next 30-50 years unless adult smokers are encouraged to quit. Also, because of the addictiveness of tobacco products, many tobacco users will need support in quitting. Population survey reports showed that approximately one third of smokers attempt to quit each year and that majority of these attempts are undertaken without help. However, only a small percentage of cigarette smokers (1-3%) achieve lasting abstinence, which is at least 12 months of abstinence from smoking, using will power alone (Fiore et al 2000) as cited by the above policy paper. The policy paper also stated that support for smoking cessation or “treatment of tobacco dependence” refers to a range of techniques including motivation, advice...

Before participating in the experiment, students provided personal information such as exercise and smoking habits. This data was then compiled into a database, which was made available to the current class. From this data, I selected 4 variables (RQ, SV, ⩒O2, and MAP) to analyze in relation to 2 populations (10 male smokers versus 10 male non-smokers). I averaged the data from each population, then performed 4 unpaired t-tests to determine if there was a relationship between smoking and each individual variable. In the experiment, students rested for approximately 5 minutes to establish baseline resting values, then had their blood pressure...

Health Promoting Young Adult Smokers

...prevention. Without knowledge people cannot make healthy choices about their lifestyles therefore health education is very much a part of health promotion (Tannahill, 1985) cited in (Bright, 1997). This assignment is going to be based on a health initiative towards a group of young adult smokers within age range of seventeen and twenty five years. The author has chosen smoking because more young people continue to take up cigarette smoking and yet smoking has been identified as the biggest single cause of preventable ill health and premature deaths in the United Kingdom (DOH, 1999). The paper is going to support the choice of the topic with statistics and what the government is saying. The needs of the young adult smokers are going to be identified and these needs are going to be addressed through interactive lecture approach. It is essential to consider a health promotion model as a tool to meet the assessed needs. There are many health promotion models but for purposes of this assignment, Ewles and Simnett (1999) model of health promotion is going to be used.
