So Much Water So Close To Home
I couldn’t find my book, so I read it on the internet
All human beings have needs. The most basic ones are the natural, physical conditions required to stay alive. However there are other needs that are just as important to make the human mind work properly. Love and care are concepts deeply essential to the life of any person. If these psychological needs are not fulfilled throughout a persons lifetime it can result in different sorts of mental distortions.

The short story “So Much Water So Close To Home” is written by the American minimalist Raymond Carver and was first published in 1974. The action takes place in the town of Pasco and by the Naches River in the western state of Washington. Clair and Stuart are living together in a steady seeming marriage. Their life together with their son Dean passes regularly until Stuart and his three friends during their yearly fishing trip to the Naches River find the dead body of a young girl in the river. The conflict that arises takes their relationship out on a side track and reveals that their mutual communication is not sufficient to cope with anything out of the ordinary. Stuart is introvert, does not want to talk about the dead girl and avoids Clair’s attempts to make contact: “He chews, arms on the table, and stares at something across the room. He looks at me and looks away.” (p. 1 lines 2-3). When the men found the girl floating in the river they did nothing for the first couple of days but to make sure she could not drift away. They went on fishing, drinking, playing cards and telling stories. They phoned the sheriff on their way home and thought that was all they could possibly have done in this matter. They could not see why a dead girl should interrupt their men’s trip. Stuart does not wish to tell his wife about what have happened, and when he has to do so because of calls from the press he feels that she judges him when she wants to talk about it. He claims that he has done nothing wrong by not doing something about the dead body the moment they found it, and he gets mad by any reference to the occurrence: ““Why did you have to go miles away?” “Don’t rile me,” He says” (p. 4 lines 24-25). It would have been easy for Stuart to make up some explanation for his wife about why fishing in the Naches River contrary to the river near their home is better this time of year. However, he knows that everything could have been avoided if it was not for him and his friends need to be pure males away from family and responsibility. Clair is very affected by what has happened. Because Stuart refuses to talk it all over with her she cannot let go of the thought of it. Her mind keeps circling around dead bodies in rivers. She remembers that a girl was killed and thrown in the Cle Elum River when she was a child. She even imagines herself as the victim of such a crime: “I look at the creek. I’m right in it, eyes open, face down, staring at the moss on the bottom, dead.” (p. 4 lines 35-36). Stuarts rejection of her attempt of contact frustrates her, and his way of relating to the discovery of the dead girl makes her disgusted by him: “… lying on the far side of the bad away from his hairy legs” (p. 5 lines 8-9). She starts avoiding contact too, and the communication is definitively lost. Clair decides to go to the girl’s funeral because she cannot get her of her mind. On her way through the mountains a man in a car comes up behind her. She tries to make him pass by continuously slowing down and speeding up. The man passes, but comes back to see if Clair is alright. She, however, gets scared and fears that he is going to rape her: “He looks at my breasts, my legs. I can tell what he’s doing” (p. 7 lines 10-11). After the funeral she talks with an elderly lady who tells her that the killer has been caught in the town. Yet Clair is not convinced: “They have friends, these killers. You can’t tell.” (p. 7 line 32). They have friends, or they have helpers. For what Stuart and his friends did in the mountains was to help the killer get out of town by giving him time before reporting the murder. Back home Clair’s paranoia shows again in a moment where she thinks something has happened to her son. Stuart is in the kitchen with a glass of whiskey. He wants to sort things out: “I think I know what you need.” (p. 8 lines 8-9). He starts to take of her clothes, while Clair hears running water in her head. She is drowning in this relationship as in a cold river. There is nothing for her to grasp, no help or care. Stuart cannot give her anything but sex, and somehow Clair now associates that with love which makes her incapable of seeking the mental support and care she really needs.

Sign Miracles

...performed was when he turned water into wine at the wedding. This miracle demonstrates the seeds of the move from law to grace. When Jesus arrived at the wedding his mother, Mary, came to him and told Him they were out of wine. Elmer Towns said that Mary asked Jesus this because she knew that her son was Divine and was able to do something about it. When she asked and after Jesus told her his time had not yet come, he instructed them to fill six pots with water, which he miraculously changed to the best wine they had ever tasted. Mary told them to do whatever Jesus asked you to do. Leon Morris wrote, “The changing of water into wine is surely meant to bring out the power of Jesus to bring about a new beginning. There is a correlation between the best wine they ever had, to the best life they will ever have if they would make Jesus their Lord. Lean Morris puts it like this, “the water of Judaism into the wine of Christianity, the water of Christlessness in the wine of the richness and the fullness of eternal line in Christ, the water of the law into the wine of the gospel. When Jesus turned the water into wine, it showed His power over all creation, and His Divinity. Jesus next sign was the healing of the Nobleman’s son. This nobleman’s came to Jesus because his son was close to death. When the nobleman told Jesus this, He told him go home because your child will live. With such great faith, the man took Jesus at his word and on his way back home his servants told him...

The Praying Prey

...articulation. We often come up with thoughts like; “Does that make sense?” and the attending reply of “Hell no!” or the classic, “I can’t believe what I just saw!” For some people it’s too much to handle and they blow a 50 amp fuse, others barely notice while a few see exactly what is going on, then silently file it away. Let’s open that file. We were “Jesus People” hippie Christians, seekers rolling home to Vista from a Bible study at Captain Keno’s in Encinitas. Three Steves, an Alexis, a Bill, a Bob, a Vicky and a Nancy all stuffed inside a ’49 Chevy 2-door sedan, only because there was no back seat. The car rumbled up the coast on Hwy. 101 through a slight mist under a fairly low marine layer of about 200 ft. The moon generated a kind of glow through the cloud base and skittered on the kelp beds where the layer broke over the water. One of the guys had to pee so Steve pulled into one of the turnouts by Hole-in-the-Wall. It was still warm out in early September so we all crunched down the ice plant to an almost level spot before the drop to the beach. Alexis wanted to pray as a group so we all held hands in an elliptical with the driver on the south end, Nancy on his left and Vicky on his right. Bob “the tree” Anderson was the north point and I faced his brother Bill with...

I started my experience by asking them to define the term "disabled " which in return they answered that it is a physical or a mental condition that limits a person's condition,movements/activities or senses .To back this up I provided some basic information to help them get a more proper idea of the topic (a better grasp on the subject ,so that it will result into a good feedback session and discuss properly ) and asked if they have ever shared an experience with a disabled person or shared the same environment e.g school . I received lots of feedback in relation to this ,situations about disabled people that shared the same role as ours ,that of a student .Moreover ,I asked them how they approached disabled people .Did they act in away as if they deserved their pity ?or they regarded them as a normal person ? Furthermore I asked them if disabled people are supported enough in our socities and provided examples ; Yes (Benefits ,Positive Discrimination ,Facilities ,Improved Mentality ),No (Differentr approches ,Abuse,No benefits ,No Positive Discrimination or Facilities ) and...

Paul Milenski - Tickits

...Tickits by Paul Milenski “Then, before he put the box away, he wrote one more slip in his largest letters: “ERVYTHING WORNG!” (p. 2. l. 35-36)” This quote is a central symbol of the theme. Toby is handicapped. I believe he is suffering from arrested development. Tickets are frequently given by the police or other higher authorities to an individual, who breaks the law. Tickets are generally given, when people break the Road Traffic Act or something like that. This is the way a lot of people would describe getting a ticket. But this description does not fit the way Toby writes his tickets. Toby gives tickets to random people, who he believes are breaking the rules of a well-being society. It might seem very peculiar, that Toby writes tickets for small incidents. He gives two ladies a ticket for standing in the middle of the pavement. But there is a reason why, and the quote proves this point of view – everything in Tobys life is wrong. In order to rectify things in his mind Toby writes tickets to get a healthy society. Given tickets is something in his life, which he can control. A central theme is therefore, how Toby tries to get everything around him to be right. The text “TICKITS” was written in 1978. The writer is Paul Milenski. The text is about a young chap, his name is Toby Heckler. The story deals with a serious subject regarding human relationships and the lack of order in a Toby’s life. The narrative technique is a third person narrative. The third person narrative...

Soap

...inched through the green and ivory curtains and unmasked the layers of dust that floated around the room. It seemed like so many years ago. It was sometime in the summer between the hot months of June and July; the last day of a weeks vacation. I sit, peeling an orange with a knife, so as not to break my just painted red-satin nails, feet propped up on the table, un-shoed and sock-less. I notice the lime-green smoothie mixer that came complimentary with the hotel room. I guess that it had to be from Target and remember that I need to buy a new razor and shampoo and conditioner before we leave. Oh and soap. Definitely need more soap. I didn’t even want to think about soap right now. I want to go now but know that I really shouldn’t leave Katelyn alone despite everything. She is sleeping, I like to remember her that way that morning, sleeping like that. I try never to forget her curls and her eyelashes as I watch her sleeping on the bed; her round Jackie Kennedy sunglasses and my Audrey Hepburn heels that were thrown off the bed from the night before. I want to remember her this way. Before she goes back to her life. Her life without me. Her married life. Her life that began again last night. I try to remember her this way. The moon had deepened the curtains a olive purple as the street lamps lit the way home for the late night drunks. “I knew you wouldn’t stay Katelyn…” I told her, my tears mixed with my black eyeliner. ...

Environmental racism(2) is one of the biggest problems the world faces today. Issues created by corporate polluters produce trouble in the form of economic, as well as, physical. For some individuals and cultures, it affects them every day. Either through direct contact with contaminates in their environment, which has been linked to prenatal births and then later, diseases that are associated with coming in contact with polluted land and water.
