...Torrejon Henry SOC 213 Sociology of the Family Action Activity 4 An issue that I feel that is important to discuss is child abuse. There are different types of ways a child can be abused and there are signs that show that a child is being abused. The first article I chose to discuss came from the website americanhumane.org. A pattern of behavior by parents or caregivers that can seriously interfere with a child’s cognitive, emotional, psychological or social development is what emotional child abuse is defined. It includes ignoring, rejecting and isolating etc. No child should ever have to experience this and parents definitely shouldn’t render it. Love is supposed to be unconditional for the child. The second article I focused on came from the article titled, Child Abuse from nlm.nih.gov. This article talks about the different outcomes of physical child abuse. “Five children die each day from child abuse,” stated by author Neil K. Kaneshiro. This statement made me feel some kind of way because that is a lot of kids dying each day. I never would have thought so many parent or guardians would abuse their children till the point of death. Children are gifts from God that deserves to be taken care of and cherished. The final type of child abuse I decided to discuss is sexual child abuse. This type of child abuse is real sensitive to me and really upsets me to the point of disgust. The article I found to discuss came from americanhumane.org. It discusses how...

...Introduction The transition metal catalyzed cross-coupling reactions such as Negishi,1 Heck,2 Suzuki-Miyaura,3 Stille,4 Kumada,5 Hiyama,6 and Sonogashira7 are extremely powerful tools for making C−C bonds. These methods have been extensively used in wide range of academic areas including material product synthesis, materials science, medicinal, biological, supramolecular chemistry, catalysis and coordination chemistry. Some of these reactions are also useful in pharmaceutical, agrochemical and fine chemical industries.8 Among these powerful transformations, the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling (Scheme 1) (defined as transition-metal catalyzed cross-coupling between an organoboron compound and an organic halide or pseudo halide) is the most widely applied transition-metal catalyzed C−C bond forming reaction since its discovery in 1979.9 Scheme 1. Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. Suzuki reaction has become the most attractive approach for C−C bond formation due to many reasons. Firstly, the mild reaction conditions and broad functional group tolerance of this transformation. Secondly, the use of organoboron reagents has many advantages such as they are inexpensive, some are thermally stable and inert to water and oxygen, thus easy to handle (industry), they transmetallate with a variety of metal compounds under exceptionally mild reaction conditions, low toxicity, good availability of diverse organoboron reagent and easy separation of boron containing by-products from the reaction...

Nguyen Hedonic shopping motivations 227 Received February 2006 Revised July 2006 Accepted August 2006 Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam Tho D. Nguyen and Nigel J. Barrett School of Marketing, University of Technology, Sydney, Australia Abstract Purpose – This study aims to explore the impact of hedonic shopping motivations (HSM) and supermarket attributes (SMA) on shopper loyalty (SLO). Design/methodology/approach – A sample of 608 supermarket shoppers in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam was surveyed to test the model. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data. Findings – It was found that SMA and HSM had positive effects on SLO. It was also found that the impact of hedonic motivations on SLO was different between the younger and older, as well as lower and higher income groups of customers. However, no such difference was found between female and male shoppers. Research limitations/implications – A major limitation of this study was the use of a sample drawn from one transitional market. Cross-national samples will be a direction for further research. Also, the study focuses on attitudinal loyalty. Behavioral loyalty should be taken into account in future research. Practical...

...A General Review of Tetracyclines Antibiotics Chang Liu Instructor: Prof. Jasson Sello Department of Chemistry, Brown University Providence 02906, RI Tetracyclines are the first broad-spectrum antibiotic to be applied to clinic use. Nevertheless, the increasing incidence of bacterial resistance of tetracyclines led to a series of studies on the development of semisynthetic tetracyclines to circumvent the resistant organisms. In order to better design the structures of tetracycline derivatives, research on the action mode of tetracyclines, mechanisms of resistance, biosynthesis and total synthesis of tetracyclines were also performed. Keywords: Tetracyclines, Structure-activity Relationship, Mode of Action, Mechanisms of Resistance, Biosynthesis, Total Synthesis 1. Introduction Tetracyclines are a group of polyketide broad-spectrum antibiotics that has activity against a variety of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, mycoplasmas, chlamydiae and peotozoan parasites [1]. The discovery of tetracycline was in the 1940s. At that time, the problems related to the production of Pennicillin has been solved and pharmaceutical industry and academic institutes started to concentrate their energy on the development of new antibiotics. In 1948, the first member of tetracycline family—chlorotetracyclin, or Aureomycin was discovered as an isolate of Streptomyces Aureofaciens in an antibiotic screening program functioned in Lederle Labs [2]. In 1950, oxytetracycline or Terramycin—second...

...Journal of Counseling Psychology Vol. 5, No. 3, 1958 The Place of Values in Counseling and Psychotherapy1 C. H. Patterson University of Illinois fact, ethics might be considered as an expression of a group's values, an attempt to represent or express them in a systematized form. This is no doubt why Sutich (28) became involved in values in his discussion of ethics. Bixler and Seeman (3) state that "ethics are principles of action based on a commonly accepted system of values," thus relating professional ethics to social values. The APA code of ethics (1, p. 49) states that a cardinal obligation of the psychologist "is to respect the integrity and protect the welfare of the person with whom he is working." This is clearly an expression of the value of the individual in our society, as is recognized in Principle 1.13: "The psychologist should express in his professional behavior a firm commitment to those values which lie at the foundation of a democratic society, such as freedom of speech, freedom of research, and respect for the integrity of the individual" (1, p. 10). Philosophy of Counseling. From ethics and values to philosophy is only a short step. A philosophy is an integration of values, usually resulting in statements of postulates and assumptions, or principles. It is only natural, and to be expected, that philosophies of counseling and psychotherapy should reflect the philosophies How Values Affect Counseling of the societies in which these activities and Psychotherapy...
