Local and global social issues are always continuously emerging, thus a need for leaders to initiate and sustain positive change is vital. Empowering people to become part of a social change movement may be a daunting task as many are afraid of the uncertainties of new opportunities. Thus, one of the possible methods to ease the task is to utilize the Social Change Model of Leadership Development as a guide to help people realize their potential in creating a positive change in their communities. But how does the Social Change Model facilitate positive social change? The Social Change Model was created in attempts to aid individuals to enhance their group, community, and individual values. The model focuses on seven core values such as consciousness …show more content…
As individuals, what qualities do we possess that may support the groups’ effectiveness and social change? This is where the Social Change Model’s core values come in. There are seven core values, however, through an individual’s perspective, one of the approach to enhancing one’s personal capability to promote positive social change is the consciousness of self. The model defines consciousness of self as “awareness of your personality traits, values, and strengths, as well as your abilities to be a self-observer who is mindful of your own actions, feelings, and beliefs (NCLP, 44).” To be conscious of self is to be able to reflect back on our strengths and weaknesses and realize there are always areas for improvement. In short, they need to be able to lead themselves before they can lead anyone else. Which is easier said than done, as not everyone is open to constructive criticism and seek improvement. Despite this struggle, once one is truly open to self-exploration, they know their capabilities and limitations. It’s important to assess your personal values and capabilities – are they aligned to those of the groups’ goal or task? If …show more content…
These three values usually correlate with each other as in any group working towards a common goal usually will have diverse viewpoints that converges to find novel solutions to the problem. However, collaboration can be difficult for some people who prefer to work individually. In fact, group work was never a forte of mine, until I got to Portland State. Through college, I got to study life - through observing others and being open to what others can teach me. They usually say two head is better than one; but through Portland State, I have almost four-hundred other minds in just one class with astounding novel ideas that emerge and open up a world that was never before accessible to me. Or when I volunteered for the DKMS with a group of peers with different background, yet we all shared a common purpose that is dedicated to fight against blood cancer and blood disorders. Thus, collaboration allows a group to “capitalize on the multiple perspectives and talents of group members” to create an effective team that can work towards their common purpose (NCLP, 111). Another essential ingredient to collaboration is controversy with civility. Any group is bound to have differences in a viewpoint that may not align with others.
