...Discuss, with the use of examples, two negative ways in which the social media has been affecting formal Standard English use in the Jamaica classroom and one methodology that a teacher of English might employ to combat these negative effects. The social media craze is one that affects most if not all persons today. Whether we are old, young, from different races or cultures, we have been exposed to these channels of interaction in some way. Not only that but we have a wide range of these Medias to select from. While some operate one or two accounts, there are those with multiple social media accounts for example Facebook, Twitter, Tagged, Viber, Whatsapp and so on. These types of media serve many different purposes including the replacement of traditional news forms, keeping in contact with friends and family members and to promote businesses and social events. The reality of it all, however, is that everything has both advantages and disadvantages. In this case we examine the negative effects of social media on the use of Standard English in the Jamaican Classroom. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to emphasize the extent to which the use of social media has contributed to the inappropriate use of the Standard Jamaican English and the poor expression in written language among our Jamaican students. Jamaica has been described as a bilingual society with the Jamaican Creole (JC) and Standard Jamaican English (SJE) being the major and minor languages. However the problem...

Social media are increasingly visible in higher education settings as instructors look to technology to mediate and enhance their instruction as well as promote active learning for students. Many scholars argue for the purposeful integration of social media as an educational tool. Empirical evidence, however, has lagged in supporting the claim. Most of the existing research on the utility and effectiveness of social media in the higher education class is limited to self-reported data (e.g., surveys, questionnaires) and content analyses. This paper summarizes the scholarly writings as well as reviews the findings of empirical investigations. Some limitations are discussed, and future areas of research are proposed. INTRODUCTION Few people will have failed to notice the recent emergence of social media—especially much-publicized applications such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Wikipedia. Even the most casual of internet users will now be aware of the notion of social network sites and blogs, maybe even wikis and virtual worlds. Since being declared Time Magazine‘s ‘Person of the Year’ at the end of 2006, social media have come to dominate the ways in which digital technology is now used around the world. Of course, there are distinct geographical and cultural variations within this global adoption—whereas people in the USA may log on to Facebook and Twitter, Chinese users are more likely to access Renren and NetEase. Yet in all these guises, the general principles of social media remain the same. These are internet applications that rely on openly shared digital content that is authored, critiqued and re-configured by a mass of users. Social media applications therefore allow users to converse and interact with each other; to create, edit and share new forms of textual, visual and audio content; and to categorize, label and recommend existing forms of content. Perhaps the key characteristic of all these social media practices is that of ‘mass...

...The education of our children has always been emotive and when the mass media is added to the mix, volatility is inevitable. Hardly a country in the world is spared controversy in education, but when one looks behind the sometimes anarchic scenes, there is a lot about which to be optimistic and hopeful. Traditionally, the mass media and education have enjoyed a love-hate relationship. On one hand television and newspapers particularly, have provided extensive and extremely useful education content. On the other, however, their newsrooms never seem to hesitate when controversy rears is ugly head. In theory, it is absolutely vital for the mass media to keep an eye on the way in which governments administer and develop education, but it has to be said that in this day and age of a battle for survival within the mass media industry, the watchdog does tend to become somewhat rabid at times. Like most businesses the mass media often takes a line of least resistance when problems occur and a first step always seems to blame the trades union movements. In South Africa the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) inevitably faces tremendous criticism from the mass media when its members protest the enormous challenges and deprivations they face in the classrooms. Many of those challenges having very little to do with actual teaching. Regrettably, the relationship between the mass media and education involves a lot of indulgence in blame-games and reaction by...

...Integrative Design and Evaluation Jeanette Boxley American Intercontinental University Online Abstract When it comes to education and the new different type of technology that are available for use in the classroom, we as teachers must stay on top of the materials. Using these types of tools the teacher will be able to give the students the best possible education available for them. But these are only tools and teachers must be able to use them along with instructing the students on what the best way would be for each and every student in their classroom. Integrative Design and Evaluation Educational Technology Statistics Schools in 2003 did not have the computers needed to meet their student’s needs, out of all the schools in the United States the ratio of computers to students looked like this; there were 4 students for every computer. During this time frame there are only about 8% of the schools that would lend out laptops to the student body they had only about 5 computers available to lend out at that time. Also during this time frame about 10% of the public school system had some sort of hand held computer for both the students and the teachers to use during the school day (U.S. Department of Education). Out of all 50 states 48 of these included some type of technology standards in the years 2004-2005. During 2004-2005, out of the 50 states there were about 16 that offered or had some sort of charter school that were operating some type of cyber schooling...

...25th March, 2015. Broad Topic: Science and Social Media Tutor-Approved Topic: The impact of social media on academic performance of students of the Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine. Social media has become a growing phenomenon with many varied definitions. Social media generally refers to media used to enable social interaction. Social media has gained wider acceptability and usability and is becoming one of the main communication tools among students especially at tertiary level education (Al-Rahmi and Othman 2013). Further research reveals that the three major advantages of social media in higher education are improved study patterns, enhancing relationship and improving learning motivation. Social media facilitates the academic experience and helps develop study patterns but caution needs to be exercised with respect to time management (Noel 2015). A new term known as ‘interprofessional education has been introduced where different individuals come together to share knowledge with other peers. This leads to improved studying outcomes as students learn from each other’s experiences (El-Badaway and Hashmen 2015). This allows students to acclimatize to a new learning environment since they have the opportunity to share knowledge with others and conduct projects more efficiently. Wang (2014) states that learning through the use of social media provides pedagogically sound content to suit the needs of the...

...Social Networking In Schools: Educators Debate The Merits Of Technology In Classrooms In this digital world, opportunities for education are available like never before. Though teachers using online tools are empowering students take part in their education, they may also expose them to inappropriate material, sexual predators, and bullying and harassment by peers. Teachers who are not careful with their use of the sites can fall into inappropriate relationships with students or publicize photos and information they believed were kept private. For these reasons, critics are calling for regulation and for removing social networking from classrooms -- despite the positive affects they have on students and the essential tools they provide for education in today's digital climate. The positive effects of social networking sites in education are profound. According to a study conducted by the University of Minnesota on student use of social media, students who are already engaging in social networking could benefit from incorporating it into curriculum. Christine Greenhow, who was the principal investigator in a study, elaborated on the impact social networking could have on education. "By understanding how students may be positively using these networking technologies in their daily lives and where the as-yet-unrecognized educational opportunities are, we can help make schools even more relevant, connected, and meaningful to kids." ...all over the world need social media for effective learning. Education is no exception in using social media. Little is known about the influence of social media use on the academic and social lives of students. Social media has been influencing our lives for quite some time now and the trend of using it is ever increasing day by day. According to (Qingya Wang Johnson & Wales University - Providence, qaw733@jwu.edu) education has been dependent largely on the print and electronic media for quite some time, but those media are expensive due to lesser availability, on the other hand, social media is inexpensive and easily available. Using time-diary and survey data explores the use of various types of social media among students. Time-diary results suggest that the majority of students use electronic media to multitask. Robust regression results indicate a negative relationship between the uses of various types of electronic media. In addition, we find a positive association between social-networking-site use, cellular-phone communication, and face-to-face social interaction. Also, not all consequences of this technology are good ones. Many students rely on the accessibility of information on social media specifically and the web in general to provide answers. That means a reduced focus on learning and retaining information. Also it allows to hide behind screens and limited our social interaction face to face. You get the feeling of being social without having to go...
