...Bahar Arapkirli Writing Sample SOCIAL MEDIA: THE NEW OPIUM OF PEOPLE Thanks to the conceptual compositions of two different, Marxist explanation of class struggles and Freudian perspective on authoritative behavior, the critical approach on media and communication have been a growing aspect of our daily life since the second war era in which rulers used the mass propaganda by using media as an ideological state apparatus especially on increasing power of Hitler’s Germany. Today, we live in a world in which this critical approach is the very canon of decreasing the exploitation of ruler class who spend huge amount of money only for media and communication. (Peter and Simmonson 2004) From the perspective of working class, the picture seems more colorful than fifteen years ago if we consider this criticism of media and its trustworthiness by the effects of social media and blogging. One may clearly say that “Now we have our own instruments to clarify the fact and enjoy publishing our own opinion.” and even I can nod my head and ignore the “dark side of the moon”1 presented by Karl Marx on the topic of exploitation, however, in this essay, I’m going to follow my ideological ancestors and say “matter a fact, it’s all dark”2 as a rejection to this very uprising idea that alternative media makes us less exploited by ruler class of Turkey because our own counter-hegemony attitudes on social media tricks us into a brand new hegemony, the hegemony that forwards...

...Essay: Do you think social networks are a tool to gain friends or a means of isolation? During the wide distribution of the internet, social networks are more and more used for means of communication. But does this new type of development provide a better way to find friends or does it lead to isolation instead? First of all, one can say that social networks like facebook make it easy to keep in contact with friends and family as it is convenient, fast and for free. Therefore it offers a good way to maintain a relationship. To actually make friends through facebook though, seems to be more debatable. These particular types of friendships are based on a non-physical relationship, in which gestures, expressions and the outward appearance are not presented to each other. As these are important chracteristics of a person, the question occurs if one really gets to know the true personality through facebook. Hence, facebook friendships are rather acuaintances and therefore superficial. However, social networks give members the opportunity to contact old friends they havent seen in a while. Furthermore especially facebook allows members to find people from the same school or class. In this case facebook can help finding friends for people who are too shy to approach somebody personally. Nevertheless, social networks should not be overused but can be used additionally to normal cummunication. I believe that isolations only occur on very rare occasions. This can happen, members...

...In her paper, Sharon Vallor mentions that while new social media provides little avenue for direct shared activities, they do reflect friends’ will to connect with their friends. (Vallor, 2011) Vallor’s paper focuses mainly on how new social media can contribute towards friendship by means of shared virtues. She does this by exploring the ethical significance of new social media trends relating to friendship. (Vallor, 2011) For her argument, she states that this “will” can be indicative of and meets the aims of friendship with respect to Aristotle. Indeed, with the limitations that are brought about by the fast pace of life and its circumstances, the significance of the will behind people’s actions is heightened considerably. This is especially...

Contemporary Business (BUS508) Strayer University, Takoma Park Campus November, 2013 Introduction In these days of technology, our daily activities and social interactions are becoming dependent on social media. This is not limited to people who are living in most advanced countries but in less technologically advanced countries as well. This, in other word, indicates that social media has become a global phenomena. Published and unpublished sources show that over a billion of people around the globe visit social media at some time regardless of the amount and nature of use. Understanding the ever growing number of subscribers, software programmers are developing various social media platforms considering the cultural and linguistic background of the user society. The most popular social media sites, as most of witness or could guess, are the Facebook and Twitter but the Chinese Qzone, the Orkut of the Brazilian (which is owned by Google), Friendster of the Malaysian and other less popular social media platforms are already in the market being visited by their respective users. ...ITRODUCTION In an attempt to understand ‘new media’ and politics we need to define what ‘new media is and what politics is. First we start by defining politics. According to Mansoor Maitah, Politics, in the broadest sense, is the activity through which people make, preserve and amend the general rules under which they live. Lasswell also defines politics as the process of who gets what, when, and how. He believes that politics is the process of allocating scarce values. He comes up with this equation; politics = allocation values (resources) wealth status power. By definition ‘new media’ according to Marshall McLuhan (1980) generally refers to the digital media which is interactive, incorporate two- way communication and involve some form of computing as opposed to ‘old media’ such as telephone, radio and TV. However there is a thin line between ‘old media’ and ‘new media’. This is because the ‘old media are getting digitized and some have consolidated with some ‘new media’ forms. Therefore we surround the term ‘new media’ with quotation marks to signify that they are digital interactive media. Without the quotation marks we generally are denoting media which is new to the context of discussion. To illustrate this, TV at is invent was new media and therefore cannot be said to be ‘new media’. Also parts of the world that have not received certain types of media will call them new media when introduced to them. GAGETRY DEFFERETIATION FROM THE PLAT FORMS.-TO BE DONE VIRTUAL...
