Instagram is an online mobile photo sharing application through social networking, this enables users to share videos and pictures and connect them with other social networking platforms like Facebook and twitter. In October 2010 Instagram was created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger as a free mobile application and then it rapidly gained attention and grew in popularity with over 100 million active users in April 2012 and over 300 million as of December 2014. Instagram was then acquired by Facebook Co-founder Mark Zuckerberg for about $1 Billion dollars and Facebook got all rights to user’s photos and to sell user’s photos to a third party without notification or compensation.
The person I chose to interview is my best friend Susan, I have known Susan for about 10 years now and one thing I know about her is that she loves attention and loves taking pictures. I believe Instagram was made for her. Susan first learned about Instagram sometime in 2011 being that Instagram started on October 6th 2010 so she wasn’t too late in signing up like the rest of us. She said the first time she signed up she wasn’t too savvy about the application she just loved the fact that she could take pictures and then filter them however she likes then upload them into the app for the whole world to see. Susan’s first post was a picture of her face which we now call a selfie, she said whenever she did her makeup and hair she always thought to take a picture of her work then post it on Instagram this way she can show people how well she does her makeup and also do people’s makeup if they request her services.
Susan posts pictures on a daily basis and it ranges from hair, makeup and how she dresses for the day, she loves to take pictures especially if she wearing a cute outfit. Susan has about 35,000 followers which she also indicated the she doesn’t know most of her followers and just like the attention her pictures are getting on Instagram. She doesn’t follow a lot of people and she has about 500 people she follows. Most of the people she follows are celebrities, make-up artist and fashion boutiques. Like an article I read stated “Some would argue that Instagram has supplanted some of fashion week’s influence. This summer, at least, Instagram has driven the makeup conversation.” “Crowd-sourced photography magazine Street Dreams, which draws its content from Instagram users, is attracting attention of fashion brands, cultural institutions and large corporations and has collaborated with brands like Coach and the Tribeca Film Festival.”
A lot of people not only my friend uses Instagram to self-promote themselves, brand and businesses this has become a norm in the social media world. I initially wrote that since Facebook acquired Instagram, Facebook can share your pictures with a third party and even sell it for monetary gain without the knowledge of the user or owner and won’t give any kind of compensation. I asked my friend how she felt about that or if she has any knowledge about that. She responded and said she didn’t know her pictures could be sold to a third party by Facebook without knowledge or compensation, she never read the terms and condition after Facebook bought Instagram and she will take the opportunity to read the terms and condition.
Instagram has really changed my friends life in terms of how she portrays herself on Instagram she spends most of her time taking the best pictures and selfies to be used on Instagram and the most difficult part of our friendship is that whenever I call or text her, she doesn’t answer immediately but I can post and comments on picture, this has become a very bad habit and has put a strain on our relationship. Susan indicated that she can’t live without social media that it has become part of her life, that she must log into her account every day to see what’s going on or if she needs to post most pictures. She said she loves to keep her followers updated and gain more followers with the pictures she posts.
According to an article I read “Internet addiction was first proposed as a psychiatric disorder in 1996, soon after the Internet entered our everyday lives. According to a 2012 study posted on the National Institutes of Health website, "Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD) ruins lives by causing neurological complications, psychological disturbances, and social problems." It is still not officially listed as a psychiatric disorder in the bible of psychiatric disease, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V), though the more narrowly defined Internet Gaming Addiction was added in May 2013.Other subtypes of Internet addiction -- such as social media addiction -- have not been studied enough to receive their own clinical definitions or treatment recommendations. But some of the research on Internet addiction in general may shed light on observations about social media.” Social media is slowing seen as another form of internet addiction and might soon be added to the list of internet addiction besides online gaming.
Susan likes the fact that she gets so much attention on Instagram compared to her real life or Facebook profile and she doesn’t see herself leaving Instagram. She said it took her years to build her image and gain lots of followers on Instagram to one day just giving it up. Susan also mentioned that Instagram is very important to her because she stays up to date on fashion trends and lots more and it makes it much easier to keep in touch with her followers especially those they find interest in her makeup services. Lastly, Susan believes that everyone should sign up for Instagram, that it’s a fun application and keeps you updated in today’s world, she highly recommends it because she has been a user for years and she loves it so far.
