The ability to tap on your screen and send alerts out to all of your friends in a matter of microseconds is a contemporary phenomena of the 21st century that has repercussions which are frequently neglected. This creates the ability for those who choose to use the social media platform to network with people whom they would never have encountered if it was not for social media; however, this newfound ability creates side effects that have not been explored thoroughly, but doesn not send the new generation in the right footsteps. As an avid user of social media, I always find myself getting distracted by the buzzing of notifications from the software that has been broadcasted to my generation, and am consistently trying to evade these aberrations. …show more content…
This may not sound like a totally bad thing, because everybody trying to be perfect all the time has to be beneficial, right? Not exactly. By making mistakes, such as accidentally lighting your hair on fire, you learn, and your brain develops itself to not let situations like that happen again. Cyberspace keeps everything regardless of whether you delete it from your profile or not, someone has a screenshot, which will keep on being brought up. Your mistakes turn into tattoos that cannot fade without treatment and time, and a lot of the latter. For example, your friend may record and post you chugging three beers at a party during college, and this may seem extremely insignificant. Later, you apply for your dream job, only to realize that you were rejected because the employer did a background check and found a hint of immaturity and could not offer you the job. Without social media, that same incident would be only in the eyes of those who were firsthand …show more content…
It also does have features that are extremely valuable to society, however there should be some changes with how the platform should be advertised, and regulations to who can use it. The age group that is targeted currently by social media are the teenagers, and the younger teens that. This is an age group which is far too young to be comparing themselves to people who have already completed puberty, and have already finished education. This usage of social media at such a young age causes these children to all end up being similar, instead of exploring the world and finding what really suits them. This seems simply enough, tell all social media creators to create a recommended age higher than 13, and raise it to around 17-18. Of course, why would a social media developer want to create a smaller group of people to advertise to? They wouldn’t. Why would children follow age minimum of 17, when they do not follow that of 13 now? They won’t. This is where parental controls come into action. It is impossible for me to tell parents how to raise their children, because that is their responsibility, but I can still give recommendations. Stopping your children from using social media before 15 to 18 allows them to be who they want to be, and develop connections with real people who actually like similar things to them instead of friends who all like the same thing
