Does social media shape our identities? Some people believe that social media brings many positive to our lives. While others believe it is full of negativity. Social media impacts our identities by influencing internal and external forces within ourselves and the environment, self-esteem, and causes many psychological concerns.

Our self-identities are how we view ourselves as individuals. According to Jim Taylor a professor at the University of San Francisco, self-identity is gained in two ways. One-way identity is gained is by evaluating our own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors based on experiences, current needs, and future goals (Taylor 2011). Second, self-identity can be gained by observing the environment that surrounds …show more content…
Jim Taylor believed some may have been bad influences but was outweighed by ones who were beneficial. Although, times have changed, and Professor Taylor think the healthy influences from the past have been influenced by the latest technology. Two ways the younger generations have been influenced is by popular culture and social media. First, popular culture does not hold the mirror that reflects our self-identities. Instead, popular culture tells people who they should be and what's best them for them. Behavioral scientist Clarissa Silva thinks we are only seeing peoples highlight of their lives and comparing it to ourselves, and that it is natural to have reactions to what we are seeing. Silvia conducted interviews with men and women, ranging from ages 28-73, that are active social media users. The interviews ranged how social media impacts relationships, dating, and our love loves. According to Silvia's interviews, 60% of people using social media reported that it has impacted their self-esteem in a hastily, 50% reported social media having negative effects on their relationships, and 80% reported that is easier to be deceived by others through their sharing on social media (Silva 2017). Social media creates a kind of a paradox effect: giving off the illusion of many choices while making it harder to find viable options (Silva 2017). The paradox effect in dating creates an illusion of having more social engagement and popularity but masking one’s true personality. Few people who communicate digitally more than physically are easier to emotionally manipulate others because they are reliant on what Silvia calls the “Vanity Validation” (Silva 2017).
