THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction Social Networking sites, one of the most commonly used and popular to teenagers, specifically students. The Social Networking is helpful through being the fastest way of communicating to others. Thus you can connect toy your friends and relatives and keep updating with them. SNSs are inexpensive medium socializing; you can connect and reunite with your old friends and keep in touch.

You can also ease of setting up events such as creating a group of invites. It also gives us information and knowledge accordingly. With the latter-day technological wonders; are barrages of factors which can keep student attention from their studies? SNSs could also be a tool of invading ones privacy; likewise, SNSs are open to everyone.

SNSs are also medium for people who are bully; cyber bullying is one most commonly problems in SNSs which a great factor of making one’s life miserable. Also, SNSs can cause lack of personal communication; there is a concern over people becoming so reliant upon the convenience of social networking sites that they aren’t actually using “real life” verbal skills and losing them out on social intimacy with other people.
Also, SNSs not only give knowledge and information but also some of them five hoax and makes troll of information. Nowadays, teenagers put more time on SNSs and this would be high risk in their academic performance. Nevertheless, students must give proper education on how these problems could be avoided. Not only students should rely on these educations but, it should start on their hands and become responsible on manipulating these social networking sites.

Nowadays, college students are less prepared for college-level work because of being addicted to it. Once they get to college, they tend to spend fewer hours studying their homework while spending more hours using social networking sites such as Facebook, twitter, tumblr and others. In this study, researchers tried to know the effect of both time spent in studying and the time spent in social networking.

Distraction is also one of the disadvantages of social Networking to college students because it will distract the attention of every student when it comes in studying. Students May also feel the unwillingness to devote time for studying because it’s more easy for them to use social networks than to study their lessons. College also have the possibility to have problem in their concentration in other more important things because they paying too much attention in social networking.

Nowadays, every college student is becoming addicted to social networking and researchers thought that it getting worse. Do you think it is helpful for every college student’s studies? Or it’s just a waste of time. Does every college student is well prepared for the level of working in college? What do you think the effects of too much using of social networking sites? Why do you think that distraction is one of the disadvantages of social networking? Let’s find out.

The social networking and internet communication is becoming extremely popular to teenagers especially to students. It is one of the most popular topics that being talked about by the students. Social networking is the process of finding friends and managing friendships, even if they do not know each other. Moreover, they are able to get updates from their friends by using these social networking sites. Some people are also discussing different important topics that encourage them. They exchange their ideas as well. Example of this social networking sites are Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and etc. through this, we develop our interpersonal relationships.

However, there are several/negative effects of social networking sites on our day life. Many students had become their everyday routine to access in the internet and log-in to their accounts. They always rely on using these sites even when doing home works and school works, they just type and then they instantly got answer in just few clicks. Facing up in front of computer and accessing your internet the whole day just to update your status, chat with friends and even playing games makes you time useless. It is really a time consuming and becoming addicted to this sites. Why are social networking sites frequently used by the students nowadays? This research aims to determine the social networking sites to the interpersonal relationships of the students.

Statement of the Problem This study is trying to find out the disadvantages of Social Networking. Its effect to the Academic performance of the College Students of the University of the East-Manila SY: 2012-2013. Specially, it sought to answer the following question.

1. Why is it social networking appealing to all the people? 2. Is social networking important in our lives especially in our studies? 3. What are the consequences that can affect to a person being exploited in a social networking? 4. What are the learning implications of social networking? 5. Can the social networking penetrates and remains on the mind of the users even though the technology is vastly advancing?

Assumptions This became essential to everyone that you’re required to have amounts on these social networking sites to have that belongingness. Social networking gains a lot of popularity among students these. It is so convenient that it allows two persons from different places to communicate with each other. It already became essential to every student that each student must have it to have that sense of belongingness although there are lots of great things that social networking can do. But there are also disadvantages, like abusing these sites and loss of focus on the part of the student because of staying too much time in front of the computer and can be called addiction.

Back on the old times when there is no technology at all, students were studying at their best and researching at libraries to be able to get sufficient knowledge about their topics at school. But now, they spend most of their time updating their accounts on these social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and many more.

Significance of the Study
Educational Implication This study would let college student’s act in accordance on the guides on the proper use of Social Networking Sites. In that instance, there would be fewer occurrences of problems such as spreading negative sentiments, cyber bullying, copyright infringements, spamming, trolling, privacy issues and social networking addiction. It should be stressed out that this study could have been the answer for these problems or anyhow would help elude these social networking problems.

1. This study aims to explain the effects of using these social networking sites. 2. Explains the lot of negative effects to the students who are accessing these social sites. 3. Gives the realization of being use these sites and became the addiction of students. 4. We also would like to give a certain form of guidance to those who are in the situations. 5. Lastly, we would like to provide evidences that would solidify the support on controlling the usage of social networking sites, thus reducing the risk of assimilating such addicting activities.

Definition of Terms
Academic Performance - It is how well a student deals with his or her studies and meets standards set out by local government and the institution itself. It can also be defined as what a student have shown that he or she can do in a certain subject.
Communication - It is the exchange and flow of information and ideas from one person to another. It may be face to face, through letters, cell phones and telephones. In this study, communication is the act of exchanging and sharing common interest with each other through social networks.
Distraction - It is something that diverts attention. Something that interferes with concentration or takes attention away from something else. It is negative in a way that you can’t focus on what you are doing. Positive in a way that it can be useful for you.
Time Management - It is the act or process of planning and controlling over the amount time spent in such activities. It may be aided by range of skills, tools, and technical used to manage time when accomplishing specific task, projects and goals complying with a due date.
Virtual Community - People sharing cyberspace connection. A group of people communicating with each other, sharing common interest via internet. They are computer-mediated people and are self-subscribing.

Scope and Delimitation This study limits its coverage on the academic performance of college students of UE Manila SY: 2012-2013 only. Its main purpose is to identify the common problems that they encounter and to propose possible solutions regarding these problems. This study considers every aspects of students’ personal information that has an impact on their academic performance especially the disadvantages of social networking. Each of the respondents is given same questionnaires to answer. And this study focuses on the current college students of UE Manila SY: 2012-2013.

INPUT PROCESS OUTPUT

The researchers will first consider the factors that may determine the disadvantages of social networking. Through this, it will help us to gather information and data regarding on the topic. Then selection of the data and information gathered will take place. After this, the researchers will have an analysis on those factors that must be understood and analyzed in order to determine what will be the answers on the disadvantages of social networking. Lastly, from the information and data gathered, to the analysis of these factors, the output or application will take place.
