How Can Social Psychology Assist Towards Sustainability in the Hospitality Industry?
Human society has developed into a stage where environmental issues have become an international concern. A focus and worry on climate change is completely essential. The U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warns that the planet is warming faster than previously predicted. Madeleen Helmer is Head of the Red Cross and Red Crescent climate change center in the Netherlands. She says problems caused by climate change will not go away and must be addressed (Schlein, 2009). We need to be cautious that it is not a rush to focus on climate change without considering the physical and psychological reasons that have caused it. As a traveller must consume products in the destination, the environmental impact from the hospitality and tourism activities is unavoidable. Beside of this, travellers especially who of the world’s developed nations enjoy the comfort and convenience of technological innovations not dreamed of a century ago. (Myers, 2009) With the rapid development of tourism, the conception of tourism is misunderstood and expanded; therefore the tourism activities lead great pressure to the environment. According to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, the top level of growth in human is self-actualization, followed by esteem and love/belonging (Maslow, 1943). Based on his theory, the human motivation towards material wealth will move through to spiritual wealth eventually. This is the reason why the increases of households with telephones, cars and higher salary have been not contributed to their happiness. Moreover, temporal discounting can be applied to everyone somehow. People do things despite knowing the risk of it in the long rum. The desire can overrule the concern in the future. When the event has no immediate and direct affects on their life, they choose to not concern about it. This is why hotels know that environmental issue has drawn attention for decades and most of them have claimed that they are being as sustainable as possible, but clandestinely keep on using the dismal environmental products, such as chemical cleaning materials and incandescent bulbs due to the low costs and good results.
