Social Responsibility

Company Q is a smaller grocery store that seems to be struggling with keeping up with the current culture of social responsibility. These days it’s very important for businesses to implement social responsibility in with their business especially for Company Q who is competing with larger grocery chains. Implementing social responsibility in some way seems to help and increase profits for the business. Of course all at the same time the company must focus on fulfilling its obligation to its stakeholders, it can become very challenging for management to balance all the demands that are coming from every direction. (www.jci.cc/docs/programs)
Company Q has recently closed two of its other stores due to profit issues and the locations being in high crime rate areas. Customers also have been requesting them to sale healthier and organic products. In theory if they meet the request and sell the items will benefit the company due to higher profit margins. If Company Q did not sale these items they run the risk of losing more customers because these items are found at other local neighborhood markets. So Company Q did add the requested items, but only a small section.
The local food bank came to Company Q and asked them for food donations of their day old food instead of throwing it out. Company Q’s management declined to help the local community deciding instead to throw the food away, stating their concerns about their revenue to possible stealing and fraud by employees taking the food instead of donating it. By doing this Company Q is showing the community the lack of caring, negative outlook on social responsibility for a company that has been in the community for a long time. They are also showing distrust on their employees, which brings a very negative outlook upon the company. Seeing

Corporate Social Responisbility of Oil Compabies

...Introduction Corporate social responsibility (CSR) in this era of globalization can be termed as an essential business cost for companies to achieve success in the long term. Hence to uphold the brand of CSR, corporations are not to neglect the environment that would tarnish their image. Royal Dutch Shell Plc is ranked seventh among the top global oil producing companies for year 2012 by Forbes (Christopher Helman 2012). Despite its prominent reputation and its claimed aim of achieving the worldwide energy demand in a responsible manner, it does negate the fact their business operations have impacted the environment of Nigeria. The pressing argument that will be discussed in this paper would be the interminable oil spills due to the defective facilities and insufficient checks of equipments which are identified as the one of the main sources of the environmental contamination by Shell in the Niger Delta, how these irresponsible activities have implicated the environment which leads to unfavourable circumstances for society and stakeholders such as institutional investors, and the efforts made by Shell to counteract the situation. Background of Oil Spills in Niger Delta Before Shell tapped on the Delta, the eastern area of Nigeria was resource wealthy. However what thought to be a profitable activity for the corporations as well as Nigerian people too turned out to be a severe environmental threat and has been evolving for a few decades since 1956. Shell did acknowledge...

Social Responsibility and Managerial Ethics

...Chapter 5 Social responsibility and Managerial Ethics WHAT IS SOCIAL RESPONISBILITY? Two views of social responsibility The classical View * The classical View says that management’s only social responsibility is to maximize profits. * Management’s only social responsibility is to maximize profits (create a financial return) by operating the business in the best interests of the stockholders (owners of the corporation). * Expanding the firm’s resources on doing “social good” unjustifiably increases costs that lower profits to the owners and raises prices to consumers. The Socioeconomic View * The Socioeconomic View is the view that management’s only social responsibility goes beyond making profits to include protecting and improving society’s welfare. * Management’s social responsibility goes beyond making profits to include protecting and improving society’s welfare * Corporations are not independent entities responsible only to stockholders. * Firms have a moral responsibility to larger society to become involved in social, legal, and political issues. * “To do the right thing” Comparing the Two Views * A stage 1 manager is following the classical view of social responsibility and obeys all laws and regulations while caring for stockholders’ interests. * At stage 2 managers expand their responsibility to another important stakeholder group – employees. Because they want to attract, keep, and motivate good employees, stage 2 managers...

Health and Safety

...Subject: Stowham Community Centre Proposal Finance | Introduction: In this report I will be telling you about the 3 options for the Stowham Community Centre and what I will recommend as the best choice and that will be more beneficial financially and socially. The beneficial part is that you will be saving more money and is cheapest, social part is that it’s for a certain age group where they will get along and can come and do some learning and meeting new people and be able to build up confidence and get involved into new activities. | Findings: In my Findings I have found that each option e.g. Café, Karts and Arts have a lot of sales but overall café has the most of a total of £25.066 which will be very profitable. In the monthly running up costs café and karts have the most expenses for the running costs whereas the Arts have a very cheap running costs with a total of £11.790 so when they are going through all the building and the stock also the insurance and wages and all the other bills will be very cheap because they will have profit of £5.000 every month because of their monthly income whereas café and Karts they will only have a profit of 1 to 2 thousand pound. The most successful to be in the set-up cost will be the Arts again because they have cheap expenses for the Equipment and stock whereas the Café and Karts are a lot more expensive to be paying for the cheapest Building work would be the Café but for the total for the set-up cost will be the Café. ...

...What do we mean at DePaul by a “Socially Responsible Leader”? DePaul’s Vision Twenty12 calls for a special focus on “developing socially-responsible leaders and engaged alumni.” This goal is central to the full expression and realization of our Catholic, Vincentian and urban mission, which challenges us to maintain vigilant attention to the common good and to the sacred dignity of all people, especially the poor and marginalized. The development of socially responsible leaders in today’s complex, global, and ever-changing world requires a commitment to students’ holistic and integrated learning by a community of faculty, staff and University partners who accompany and mentor students on their developmental path. Moreover, it requires that the University community itself embody what it seeks to develop in its students, thus acting as an effective mentoring community and environment. At DePaul, five broad categories have emerged as central to our understanding of socially responsible leadership: 1. Self-Understanding & Personal Integrity Socially responsible leaders have achieved a sense of self-authorship or personal agency. They critically assess and actively discern how their personal gifts, talents, resources, and abilities might best contribute to the broader human community. They articulate and live with a sense of authenticity, purpose, and ethical integrity. They maintain an appreciation for the transcendent dimension of human life, and seek ongoing personal...

He talked about RIASEC which is a personality model, and it is an interest inventory tool designed to help match your interests and skills with similar careers. RIASEC stands for realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising, and conventional. The people who are realistic are the “doers”. They like to fix things like cars or like to hunt; they like things that are hands on. The people who are investigative are the thinkers. They like to ask a lot of questions and they may like school because they get to learn new things. Artistic people are the creators they like music, instruments, art, they like to create different things. Social people are the helpers they like to volunteer, or help a...

Drama Reaction of Death of a Salesman

...salesman is known to be used in conveying social matter on the American society. Death of a salesman shows how the American dream can be harder to achieve than some people expect it to be. Arthur uses time to his advantage as he uses flashbacks to at one point have a conversation with his dead brother of a past conversation that he is showing other people as he is playing cards. They are used to show his brothers success to try and push him in the right direction for willies sake. His sons also go back to see their past and recollect. Gripping with a influence of the past is a theme that all literature has become in modern literature and of Death of a Salesman ("What Literary Devices Does Miller Use In "Death Of A Salesman"?", 2015).  The American Dream The American dream in my eyes is for wealth and happiness and many people would have the same dream and thoughts of what the American dream is and how they would precede it. Willy is always looking for a way to fix his sons after their failures and he uses the aspect of foreshadowing to try and show that even with the best of wises there is not always a way to fix problems for people that do not want to be fixed or that cannot fix themselves. Biff and willy also have a different look on the American dream and because he cannot live up to his father standards and expectations it contributes to the breakdown of the family ("Arthur Miller'S Death Of A Salesman Has Been Used To Convey Social Commentary", 2015). Hello World

...January 30, 2009 The End of Solitude By William Deresiewicz What does the contemporary self want? The camera has created a culture of celebrity; the computer is creating a culture of connectivity. As the two technologies converge — broadband tipping the Web from text to image, social-networking sites spreading the mesh of interconnection ever wider — the two cultures betray a common impulse. Celebrity and connectivity are both ways of becoming known. This is what the contemporary self wants. It wants to be recognized, wants to be connected: It wants to be visible. If not to the millions, on Survivor or Oprah, then to the hundreds, on Twitter or Facebook. This is the quality that validates us, this is how we become real to ourselves — by being seen by others. The great contemporary terror is anonymity. If Lionel Trilling was right, if the property that grounded the self, in Romanticism, was sincerity, and in modernism it was authenticity, then in postmodernism it is visibility. So we live exclusively in relation to others, and what disappears from our lives is solitude. Technology is taking away our privacy and our concentration, but it is also taking away our ability to be alone. Though I shouldn't say taking away. We are doing this to ourselves; we are discarding these riches as fast as we can. I was told by one of her older relatives that a teenager I know had sent 3,000 text messages one recent month. That's 100 a day, or about one every 10 waking minutes, morning...

Biospychosocial

...Penney, (2013) defines “The Biopsychosocial Model” as an approach or method that guides and helps to understand individual’s biological, psychological and social aspects, for example emotions, behaviours and thoughts. Therefore the importance of understanding human health and illness will aid nurses with knowledge of how to provide holistic care. It is a health care model that deals with the clinical care and practical guidance to the patient. (D) Physical Factors The skeletal system of an individual goes through major changes because the musculoskeletal system response slows down due to aging affecting movement and posture, for example loss of calcium from the bone. Banks et al. (2009) stated that mineral density will decrease after menopause. Therefore at this life stage of women they are prone of hip fracture. Ageing affects bones making them weaker and less dense which make them likely to fracture easily, Individuals might find it difficult to lift things and the less dense the bones the less flexible movement becomes because of the weakness...

Coping with Stress

...take my mind off of some of the hard times we all go through in our lives. Stress can cause health problems or make health problems worse. It can cause unhealthy physical symptoms if it becomes persistent, such as in response to life’s daily challenges and changes. Some people may constantly feel fatigued, unable to focus, or even out of control even if the cause is something minor. Learning how to cope with stress is not only beneficial to my health, but it also helps me manage my life to the point where I am not overworking myself. The article “Coping with Stress” suggests that psychologists have identified three coping methods: Reappraising the situation, learning from the experience, and making social comparisons. In my personal experience, I have used the learning and social aspects. I feel it is important to learn from what you are going through. It builds my confidence, and helps me to understand what’s in front of me. For example, my 4 year old son has been...

Social Construction of Reality

...CheckPoint Social Construction of Reality Aldonia Bailey SOC/120 11/29/2013 Carol Parker Currently I work in a chiropractor office where, I have been for a little over a year. My coworkers at first knew me as the quite one but as time went by they got to know me. So now they know me as the feisty one in the office, because I rarely put up with clients ignorance. My coworkers also think I’m antisocial because I’m not fond of going out after work or going to many office functions. I mostly agree with them, because I feel like I should treat work as a professional space. In the beginning I felt different, I socialized with my coworkers by going out on weekends and after work, but as time went on I felt like all my coworkers did was go to clubs and get drunk. However this may work for some people its just not the lifestyle I’m comfortable with. Even though my interaction now is limited with my coworkers I think I’m more open and sociable with my family (mainly my aunt). My personable social status is determined by my family dynamic, mostly because I feel comfortable where I can let my guard down. When considering how my social status influences my view of the world, I instantaneously think of my childhood and the way my mother treated me. My childhood was stressful mainly because my mother wasn’t the most financial or emotionally stable individual. With that being said she was also very physically and mentally abusive towards me and my brother so the cops and DPSS were always...

Catcher in the Rye Essay

...‘THE CATCHER IN THE RYE’ AND ‘IGBY GOES DOWN’ – NON-CONFORMITY Both J.D Salinger’s 1951 Bildungsroman novel The Catcher in the Rye and Burr Steer’s film Igby Goes Down, demonstrate that regardless of context, the youth will choose not to conform to socially held values. We can see that this is the manifestation of the vulnerability and hesitation experienced as adolescents like us grow up. Ultimately both these texts explore the search for identity and individualism as a cause for non-conformity. The Catcher in the Rye was written during a post war era and a time of drastic social change. However, many of its conservative values remained and most importantly, the notion of youth conformity was held in high regard. On the other hand, Igby Goes Down is set in the 1980s -1990’s American era, a time of expanding multi national corporations, materialism and commercialism. Salinger and Steers utilise the characterisation of their young, sardonic and rebellious protagonists, Holden and Igby to epitomise non-conformity. The composers allude to the recurring theme of isolation and alienation in both texts. As a result of their non-conformity, the protagonists experience rejection and depression as they search for their selfhood. Similarly, the national ethos of the American Dream is explored as a mere fallacy, and both composers portray this through their protagonist’s wealthy backgrounds and opulent upbringings and yet money doesn’t bring them happiness. Salinger, through literary...
