...Look around you, according to the U.S. Social Security Administration’s Official Website “one out of every six people you encounter is on some form of Social Security.” Whether it is Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), which is for insured workers, disabled spouses, and children disabled before age 22 of disabled, retired or deceased workers. Or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which is given to people with little or no income, it is costing the United States government over $66 billion a year to fund. Furthermore, West Virginia leads the nation in the percentage of recipients on Social Security with a whopping 24%, or one out of every four people. (“Quick Facts”) The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program was created in 1972 to establish a minimum income for elderly, blind, and disabled people who were unable to work. As a Bail Enforcement Agent my job is to bail people out of jail who have been charged with a crime and are incarcerated. Almost 80% of the people I bail out of jail are receiving some form of SSI, or have an immediate family member who does. The crimes they commit range from domestic violence, breaking and entering, DUI, robbery, and illegal prescription drug distribution. Should the people who go out and commit these crimes be entitled to such generosity from our Government? Is anyone considering the people who work hard to support their families and are paying to fund these programs? The United States Government needs to implement some type...

...History The U.S. Social Security program is designed to aid residents in need through welfare subsidies. The programs are provided by organizations on federal, state, local, and private levels; and help to provide eligible residents with food, shelter, healthcare, education and money. Aid is provided through financial aid for college education, unemployment disability insurance, food stamps, pensions for eligible low-wage workers, subsidies for housing, and health insurance programs for public employees (Feldstein, 2005; Krugman, 2007). President Franklin D. Roosevelt enacted the Social Security Act on August 14, 1935 as a means to battle the Great Depression of the 1930’s. Beginning in 1932, the government had started providing loans and grants to States to pay for direct relief and work relief, since States, local communities, and private charities did not have the financial resources to cope with the growing needs of the American people. Then in 1935, when the Social Security Act was created, two social insurance programs were established on a national level for the American people. One of these Federal systems provided benefits for the elderly and retired workers who had been employed in industry or commerce. The second was a Federal-State system that would provide insurance to the unemployed (Historical Development, n.d.). Since its conception, the Social Security Administration has grown and developed programs shaped by America’s changing economic and social conditions...

...performance. Hostile environment is simply put as unwanted sexual advances or sexual jokes. This could make the environment at work very uncomfortable. Having regulations concerning sexual harassment has made the workplace better in many ways. The hard workers and ones who deserve the job will be the ones to make it up the ranks because they will be judged on work performance, not chosen by returning sexual favors. This will also make the workplace more enjoyable, because a person will be able to walk into work and focus on work. They don’t have to deal with judgment and criticism of others based off of their sexual gender. Social Security disability insurance is going to influence staffing because people with disabilties can be hired with a limited list of job requirements. This is going to change the way staffing is done. Someone who is hired with a disability is going to have their own personal set of job requirements they are capable of doing, which is most likely going to differ from some of the other staff I similar positions. References Weitzer, P. I. (2002). Sexual harassment: Cases, case study, and commentary. New York: P. ...With the rising number of workers in America who are dependent on SSDI benefits rising to a record one out of fourteen, the Social Security Administration is experiencing a loss of funds at a rate much earlier than anticipated (Finger n.p). The funds intended to return to workers once retirements are reached are now instead going to SSDI beneficiaries. Noted by Finger “According to the Congressional Research Services this program cost taxpayers $128.9 billion in 2011 and was in deficit to the tune of $25.3 billion” (Finger n.p). The SSA funds come from the constant 1.8% payroll tax, and SSDI makes up 18% of Social Security spending (Finger n.p). Taxpayers are unknowingly suffering from disability fraud without even realizing the seriousness...

...alcoholics and drug addicts really get Social Security disability benefits? Not anymore. There never were all that many people getting Social Security disability benefits on account of alcoholism or drug addiction, but Congress has now prohibited Social Security from paying disability benefits on the basis of alcoholism or drug addiction. However, alcoholics and drug addicts have heart attacks, get cancer or get sick in other ways just like everyone else. Alcoholics and drug addicts who become disabled apart from their alcoholism or drug addiction can become eligible for Social Security disability benefits. Abstract Social Security Disability Insurance (SSD or SSDI) is a payroll tax-funded, federal insurance program of the United States government. It is managed by the Social Security Administration and is designed to provide income supplements to people who are physically restricted in their ability to be employed because of a notable disability, usually a physical disability. SSD can be supplied on either a temporary or permanent basis, usually directly correlated to whether the person's disability is temporary or permanent There are many different types of disablities that are covered under SSDI. However, one area that has been under heavy debate is whether or not substance abuse should be considered a disablity and funded by SSDI. This study examined symptom severity and level of functioning in recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits for drug addicts...

...Michelle Robinson 5/29/16 HCA255 Orazie Slayton Social Security Administration During the Great Depression of the early 1930s a form of Social Security was created but the federal government was not involved in the support of elderly people and their families, those concerns were considered to be handled locally or by the state. According to the America’s Historical Documents (n.d.), that changed on August 15, 1935 when president Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act, this act established a system of old –age benefits for workers, benefits for victims of industrial accidents, unemployment insurance, aid for dependent mothers and children, the blind, and the physically handicapped (America’s Historical Documents, n.d.). Now the Social Security Administration (SSA) operates as an independent federal agency under the Social Security Act. The framework, issues, and priorities of the Social Security Administration has an impact on health care policy and delivery. Like any other federal agency the Social Security Administration has a purpose and a mission that acts as a blueprint in how to meet the needs of the serviced population. The SSA serves a purpose to the public to provide protection for aged and disabled persons against the expenses of being ill, providing material needs of individuals and families, also keeping families together, and to give children the chance at a healthy and secure future. ...Medicare Policy Process The health care, policy-making process is composed of three major stages; the formulation stage, legislative stage, and the implementation stage. The policy process refers to the specific decisions and events that are required for a policy to be proposed, considered, and finally either implemented and/or set aside. It is an interactive process with multiple points of access providing opportunities to influence the multiple decision makers involved at each stage (Abood, 2007). Each stage presents a unique set of events for a policy to be proposed, considered, and either implemented or rejected. In the formulation stage there is an input of ideas, information, and research from government officials, citizens, and special interest groups. The issue is framed and the purpose and outcome is defined. Finally strategies are chosen and the necessary resources are identified. In the legislative stage the policy must be discussed by congress, agreed on and signed into law. In the implementation stage the policy is put into effect, human resources and funding are allocated. After a new policy is implemented, advocates, opponents, or other “interested parties” begin to consider the consequences of the decision and its implementation (Cockrel, 2007). Abood (2007), “The overall health care system, including the public and private sectors, and the political forces that affect that system are shaped by the health care, policy-making process” (The Policy Process...

...and Medicaid, created by the Social Security Amendment Act 1965, added Title XVIII and XIX to the Social Security Act. President Lyndon B Johnson was responsible for bringing about this change. Social Security Program started during the Great Depression of 1930s because of the stock market crash and bank failure, which wiped away the retirement savings of the Americans. Poverty rate among senior citizen exceeded 50% during this time. Social Security Act was created in an attempt to limit the five dangers of modern American Society. The Social Security Act was signed by President Franklin D Roosevelt on August 14, 1935, thus becoming the first president to advocate federal assistance to the elderly. Edwin Witt, the executive director of the president committee on economic security is the father of Social Security. If the total benefit paid by social security in 1940 was $35 million, it was $247.8 billion in 1990, after 50 years. In 2009, about 51 million Americans received $650 billion benefits, under different social security programs like social security disability insurance (SSDI), supplemental security income (SSI), retirement insurance benefits (RIB), temporary assistance for the needy families, ticket to work and self-sufficiency program, unemployment benefit, State children’s health insurance program, and Medicare and Medicaid. Medicare Title XVIII of the Social Security Act deals with Medicare. It is the country’s health insurance program for the people aged 65...

...Homelessness in Fort Worth, Texas – specifically, in the East Lancaster Avenue area is where society has deemed homelessness to be acceptable and has even allocated certain streets and parks to the population. In other words, interstate I-35 West, serves as the geographical divider between the individuals/families experiencing homelessness, to the east of I-35 (East Lancaster Avenue), while the west (downtown Fort Worth) is thriving economically and in human and social capital. The difference can be noticed within a couple of miles and as little as 5 minutes when driving from downtown Fort Worth to East Lancaster Avenue. Sadly, the East Lancaster Avenue area has transitioned into a human homeless dumpsite, where local authorities and other members of society dump homeless individuals/families in order to keep them out of sight, out of mind. By ostracizing the homeless population and ignoring the importance of their wellbeing, makes it that much harder for the individual to overcome the barriers needed to become self-sufficient and productive citizens/members of...
