At the University of Arizona, Greek Life is incredibly large. It is one of the largest greek communities on the West Coast and over 5,000 students are involved in Greek Life. There are 55 fraternities and sororities at the University of Arizona today and they fall under 3 governing councils. Panhellenic governs and advises the fourteen social sororities at the U of A. The Interfraternity Council (IFC) is the governing body of the twenty-one social fraternities. USFC, or, the United Sorority and Fraternity Council is the governing body for six fraternities and eleven sororities that identify as ethnic or multicultural organizations. Each Fraternity and Sorority has a charity or cause that they rally behind nationwide, leading to millions of dollars being able to be raised through many fun events. Many of these charities acknowledge the greek system as a crucial part in being able to accomplish all the good work they can due to all the money that is raised. From domestic violence awareness, to supporting the troops, to raising money for St. Jude’s children’s hospital, Greek life students help millions of people all across the country from their philanthropies. Greek life also help many students feel as if they have a home away from home, provides a smaller feel to the large university, and provides countless opportunities for networking, character building, post grad jobs, and an overall sense of community. Greek life has been incredibly influential at the U of A with many of the University’s traditions being started by the Greeks. John "Button" Salmon, a Sigma Nu, told his coach, J.F. "Pop" McKale, another Sigma Nu, that inspirational phrase that Wildcats still yell today. Albert H. Condron, a Sigma Alpha Epsilon, persuaded his engineering professor and class to construct the giant white washed “A” on top on centennial mountain in 1916. E.C.
