...Homework Assignment 2 Ronald Agee Park University SO208, Social Inequalities Professor: Mr. Keith R. Hankins Social Status When speaking of the types of social statuses, the definition depends on where you are from. If you have an achieved status of a doctor for example, most people might consider your lifestyle in the upper class. Your perception of the different class would be different from what other people think. For example, you would probably not see yourself as upper class but because you have worked so hard to get to where you are at, others would feel that you have earned your status as upper class and because of this, you would feel that you have a higher status in society as opposed to a manager at 7-Eleven. On the other hand if you were born into a poor socioeconomic status, then making it up to a managerial position is probably a big success. Another type of status is an ascribed status. These are the people who are born into a status group or forced into a group (Hurst, 2010). Some times this could mean growing up in a rich, upper class family. This could also mean growing up in a poor environment where everyone is struggling to survive. Homelessness is another situation where people often times have no control over the outcomes of life. You could be an upper middle classmen and have everything go wrong. The next thing you know you are begging for pennies just to survive. But no one really knows what it is like to struggle to survive unless...

...affects our actions, our behavior, and our lifestyle. Another aspect that strongly influences our lives is social class. Social class is the rank that an individual holds, with present rights, duties, and lifestyle, in a social hierarchy based upon honour or fame. Status may be ascribed, which is assigned to individuals at birth without reference to any innate abilities—or achieved, requiring special qualities and gained through competition and individual effort. There are many effects of social class and can be felt anywhere. Almost every aspect of society is influenced in some manner by social class. School, work, religion, and home lives are also linked to the influence of social classes. “A Devoted Son”, by Anita Desai is a moving story about a father-son relationship which strongly reflects on the effects of social class. It shows how people’s attitudes vary in different circumstances. Social status can affect an individual in society by gaining or losing the respect of a person. It can allow a person to be recognized and, yet, unrecognized. It depends on the status. Social status can be developed or achieved by education, family, or fame and fortune. In the story “A Devoted Son” by Anita Desai, the author uses education, family, and fame and fortune for a way to develop and achieve social status. Education can greatly impact the individual’s development as a social being. Having a good education means being more knowledgeable and respected among people in society. It allows...

...You can’t hide from social status. I feel like social status is where someone stands within society, Fitzgerald's definition of social status is a person’s standing or importance in comparison to other people in society. Where someone's importance or standing is in society is a huge part of this book. Both of our definitions talk about where someone is within society, I feel like people mention their relationship with others to show their social status in the situation that they are in, Or they will mention something big like the town they are from or have been to. ‘ “ We heard that you were engaged.” “ It’s a libel. I’m too poor.” (ch. 1 pg. 19) People also like to talk about the nice things they have done in nice places. ‘ “ I’ve done...

...Joseph Mulangaliro 02/23/15 Writing and Other Cultures Effect of Social Economic Status Social economic status is often broken down into three categories of class (high SES, middle SES, and low SES) to represent the income an individual’s family or a specific individual may fall into. When talking about putting a family or person into one of these status’, one must look at three variables; income, education, and occupation. These variables play a huge role in how an individual would develop in as an child, view their health, and how they would ultimately value education. The environment that most low SES children are in result to less direct speech from parents, little time spent on reading books, and not seeing the doctor often because of no healthcare. These environments are sometimes small cramped apartments where the parents usually aren’t around because they either have to work or just don’t have the time. When comparing it to the environment to high SES children, the infants of these families experience more directed speech which leads to learning more words. As well as doing better in school, this goes along with having a better relationship with their parents. Parental roles in addressing their children may be linked to their position of their respective groups within society. The hard working class of individuals often has low power, small positions in their workforce. This positioning of social hierarchy requires a certain lifestyle and livelihood that is stable...

...Speech Intro: What is Social Status based on? Probably the first thing that comes to our mind is the difference between financial status of these two groups. Upper class societies tend to be wealthier whereas lower class societies tend to have less money and may even face poverty at times. Another huge factor that is used to compare these two classes is character. What I mean by character is this: Upper class individuals are generally viewed as having a higher education, morals, and decorum than lower classes; lower class societies are generally expected to have more social problems. These characteristics lead our society into looking down on lower class people. Social status is an important factor that describes society which is shown through The Jungle, The Notebook, My personal Experience, and through Bill Gates. The Jungle: In the Jungle, Upton Sinclair clearly shows the contrast between upper class and lower class.Throughout the book, many immigrants are faced with the problem of poverty, especially Jurgis Rudkus. He travels to America alongside his family, in search of a better life. Later does he find out that America is not what he expected it to be. Jurgis is in constant struggle for money and being an immigrant does not make it any easier on him or his family. The Rudkus family comes to realize that the cycle of Poverty is carried out by the Capitalist owners of the packing plants as well as local politicians. The owners would purposefully keep wages really low so...

...PARENTS’ SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS AND STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE. CHAPTER ONE Background to the Study It is an undebatable fact that the home is the fulcrum around which the early years of a child revolves. The central figures are the parents. While child-bearing and child-rearing cannot be divorced one from the other, the type of child-rearing practiced in a family has a tremendous impact on the entire life of the child including his or her academic life. Generally, the social climate or environment in which an individual finds him or her self to a large extent determines his or her behaviour and personality development. Consequently, parental guidance and discipline usually influence the behaviour of the children and at the apex of this parental influence is the mother. According to Olayinka and Omoegun (2001), the word "family" has its origin in the Latin word which could be translated to mean "domestic group". A domestic group is a group of people who habitually share a common dwelling and common food supply. According to Murdoch (1965) family is a social group characterized by common residence, economic, cooperation and reproduction; it includes adults of both sexes, at least two of who maintains a socially approved sexual relationship and one more children, own or adopted by the sexually cohabiting adult. The family provides for the physical maintenance of the child, offers him his first and most continuing social contracts, and gives him affection and other emotional...

Now, if this happens in real life, how we’re going to react in this situation? What are going to be our decision if one of our loved ones got bitten by a walker? How does this situation will affect our lives? This paper will explain how the characters act around other people and the way they respond to the others which are social interaction. While, social structure is the framework of society. In this show, we’ve seen a lot of examples of social structure and interaction for each of the characters. Some of it is the master statuses, status symbols, role conflict, and role exit. First of all is the role conflict occurs when an individual is experiencing a dispute between two or more characters that involves because of the incapability: example, in episode two, when T-dog was torn between saving Merle and himself. At first, he tried to go back to save Merle, but he accidentally dropped the handcuff key into the drain. Merle thought he did it on purpose, but T-dog didn’t have a chance to save him, so he left Merle on the rooftop, but before he leaves, T-dog put a big chain then padlocked it. Made sure that the walkers wouldn't come in. In this case, T-dog doesn't have a choice. If he didn't leave Merle both...

...others in terms of their possessions, advertising takes advantage of this kind of thinking and manipulates our society into buying their product. Without advertising, these goods would have no variety or distinguishable characteristics and could not allow conspicuous consumption. In today's society, people are no longer afraid to put their lavishness and self indulgences on display. Advertising easily influences their target audience into buying their product because in doing so, they remind others that they have status, power, and wealth. Aesthetic trumps function when it comes to our possessions (Krahmer 22). Apple is constantly developing and releasing new technology when their current models suffice and unsurprisingly, the masses flock to these retail establishments in order to buy the latest model. It is not uncommon to see people camp outside of an Apple store days before the release of a new product. Due to their advertising campaigns, Apple has now become a status symbol for the wealthy. Although that iPhone has become a common sight in our society, it still seen as a luxury and emanates an air of prestige. Having the latest model of the iPhone or Macbook means that “we've made it.” Technology isn't the only area where consumers buy based on looks and brand. Profits on luxury cars tend to be higher than for other models. Fancy cars have always appealed to everyone, wether they belong to the lower, middle, or upper class. However, it is only the upper class that are...

The data were collected from 100 students through separate structured questionnaire from different departments of Islamia University of Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan Campus using the simple random sampling technique. For analysis, linear regression model, correlation analysis, and descriptive analysis were used. The findings revealed that age, father/guardian social economic status and daily study hours significantly contribute the academic performance of graduate students. ...Later Adulthood Development Report BSHS 325 04/22/2014 Later adulthood can be a struggle for some individuals. What we do here is try to ease the transition and provide a healthy way of living. This report will explain changes in role and social position, living accommodations (accessibility and health care needs), adjustment and transition from work to retirement, changes in marriage, family, and peer relationships, and our social policies. We strive to be the best at what is done here, which means being professional and building rapport within our clients. After reading this there will be a better understanding of how we value clients and their overall well-being. As individuals age, they face many obstacles that can put limits on their lives. For example: “When older adults lose the capacity to drive a vehicle, it severely restricts their social interactions, is an assault on their mental well-being, and lessens their independence.” (Biological Aspects of Later Adulthood, Chpt. 14, pg. 590) After losing the basic abilities that enabled them to venture on their own some begin to go into withdrawal and sometimes even depression. Their roles have been shortchanged and their knowledge is undervalued or seldom used. While getting older seems to get more and more discouraging, there are individuals out there that will take matters into their own hands. They are still working even after retirement fulfilling many positions in society...

... Medea in the Mirror The story Medea in the Mirror was written by Jose Triana in the early 60s during the period of the Cuban revolution. The play clearly explores some thoughts similarly to the Roman edition of Medea myth written by Euripides. Medea in the Mirror furthermore represents Latin American plays base on Greek novels, because they all contain a sequence of similar elements such as, the outline of both plot, the task of the characters and the intrusion of songs. It can therefore observed that Jose Triana wrote Medea in the Mirror to shed light on the racial, gender, social, spiritual and economic disparities during that era of Batista rule. Jose Triana main character known as Maria a black woman of high social class in pre- Revolution Cuba, is posed to accept discrimination imposed by her society, but fights against them with her status within her nuclear family. Maria faced eviction from Perico while her husband Julian was chasing after a newly a white woman as his new bride. All these circumstance in which Maria was going through made her feel alienated. However Maria is able to identify herself via her position within her nuclear family. Maria’s role in her society as well as her household makes her speak in commanding tone of voice to others in her environment making them feel less inferior to her. There is a scene in the play on (pg 134) in which Maria’s old mistress Erudina converse with each other; Maria...

...Heath disparities, Within the several studies applied by sociologists and economists in order to provide a general overview of the phenomenon related with the heath situation, a focus on the differences between the population in terms of health conditions is the component that mostly emerges and has to be deeply understood. Differences are to be classified as social advantages that an individual has in comparison to another one with a worse health situation. In this context many are the social economic variables influencing the individual’ s health level, such as education, income, occupation and race combined with the public health policy characterise the socioeconomic individual status (ses). Ses Definition: Robin Morris, 2000: “socio economic status refers to components of economic and social status that distinguish and characterize people”. The SES is the combination of socio-economical parameters which shows the individual’s position in the society in relation to the variables above mentioned. Before starting by plotting the relation within education and ses, it would be more useful to analyse the factors influencing the level of education and how these are effecting the quality and the expectancy of life. In particular lower ses affects negatively the student’s academic achievements because more educated individuals report better health and face lower mortality risk. Therefore a higher educational level causes better heath (Grossman 2006). Education...
