...The success stories of early North American industrialists were often characterized as being about conquest through resourcefulness and natural ability. John Rudolphus Booth and Frederick Weyerhaeuser both came from an agrarian lifestyle and yet managed to evolve into “lumber kings” that prospered in the lumber industry through amassing significant amounts of knowledge about the trade. They both enjoyed “outside” work more than dealing with managerial problems and they were described as being very private people. However, John R. Booth was much more reticent and self-sufficient than Frederick Weyerhaeuser when it came to business whereas, Weyerhaeuser was very reliant on relationships with other people throughout his career. Therefore, while both of their careers seem incredibly similar at times, it was their personal characteristics and individual modus operandi that accounted for the disparities in their vocations. For instance, Weyerhaeuser, from the very beginning showed a tendency to move forward in business through networking and connections whereas, John R. Booth preferred to be self-supporting and achieving through preserving. In 1856, after moving to the Coal Valley Township in Rock Island County, Illinois, Weyerhaeuser began working in a small lumberyard attached to the Rock Island and sawmill . This was where he met F.C.A Denkmann who was also a German born immigrant much like Weyerhaeuser himself. They formed a friendship that later on changed into a family relationship...

...The Beatles made sure to target the greedy as the corrupt businessmen and how unfair they were compared to the working class. A lyrics describe the classes as pigs, envisioning the working class as playing in the dirt meaning they were hard working and “…life always getting worse, always having dirt to play around in” (“The Beatles” 1). On the other hand, they describe the businessmen as bigger piggies, showing them to have a clean white shirt on; “Have you seen the bigger piggies in their starched white shirts? You will find the bigger piggies stirring up the dirt always have clean shirts to play around in” (“The Beatles” 1). They contrast the social classes and showing that the corrupt always have their dapper clothing and do not have a worry about getting dirty. Through the song they portray the piggies without a care, becoming blind to the corruption and unintentionally do harm to each other as shown in the lyrics “…you can see them out for diner, with their piggy wives clutching forks and knives to eat their bacon” (“The Beatles” 1). This shows how oblivious the working class has become to the corruption of the world and how they can take without care, and for such mindset nothing is ever enough, and something is always lacking. Martin Luther King Jr. changed the outlook of millions of Americans on the racial division in the country by using peaceful protests and eloquently delivered speeches. Benjamin Franklin and the founding fathers pioneered an idea that a country could be run by the people, which was in direct opposition to the rule they were under in Britain. When it comes to music icons that have changed the normalcy of music during their time, one would have to be Joan Jett. The music industry was changing during the 1960s in part to what Americans were experiencing; the British Invasion, the assassination of President Kennedy, the Vietnam War, and the Civil Rights Movement. Rock and Roll quickly made its way into the mainstream being a powerful voice for the cultural revolution. ...Dame Anita Roddick and The Body Shop: Getting Started The daughter of Italian immigrants born and raised in the UK, Anita Perella began developing her legendary work ethic and keen business sense at an early age as she and her siblings worked tirelessly in her parent’s café as children. It was very common in those days for immigrant children to labor as hard as (if not harder) than their adult counterparts and Anita was no exception. She was a hard worker but also garnered a reputation for being a “rebel” by challenging the ideas and concepts of those around her. It is undoubtedly these traits (among others)—her tireless work ethic, savvy business sense, and willingness to think outside the box—which led to the eventual creation and overwhelming success of Anita’s legacy: The Body Shop. By the mid-70’s Anita had already completed her college education and began to travel the world, drifting from one position to another—teaching in Israel, working for the United Nations in Geneva..etc—before deciding to become a student of the world by exploring other nations and cultures. In her own words: “(…) that's when I first understood the power of community and a world beyond our Western notion, and the role women could play in it. It was education through experience, and it was where I got the ideas for The Body Shop.” When she returned from her expedition Anita met and fell in love with her future husband and the father of her two daughters; Gordon Roddick. Together the couple owned...

...Modern cinema described both Staley Kubrick and Alfred Hitchcock as the pioneers of their genres and professions. Social culture on the other hand named Kubrick an undeniable genius, free-spirit and in a biography of Stanley Kubrick, a “talented shit” (Baxter) and Hitchcock “The Master of Suspense” and what I gather to be mainly just a sick, obsessive pervert. That all being said, these men faced the new world that was emerging in film. It was the early 1960’s and the Hollywood Studio System collapsed which led to an intense weakening on censorship rules. From fluffy tales of love, suggestive and symbolic vampires, and only whispers and innuendos to appease the audience need for guttural expose, rose the dawn of sex and violence. This concept of weakened censorship paved the way for two very disturbed, very brilliant people to move to the forefront of mainstream cinema. Stanley Kubrick was a targeted to resurrect “Spartacus” at the beginning of his career and it was an instant classic and quite a feat for someone as new as he was. Hitchcock on the other hand was riding on success after success with his films “Vertigo” and “North by “Northwest.” While they had many differences in genre and execution, they were both...
