...Tonetta SOCIOLOGICAL PORTRAIT: MILESTONE 1 SOCIOLOGICAL PORTRAIT: MILESTONE 1 When we are born, we carry a huge cloud over our head. It stays with us our entire life until death, we all know it as socialization. Socialization is a term used by sociologist to refer to the lifelong process whereby people are made aware of the behavior that others expect of them as regards the norms, values, and culture of their society. In this paper I will talk about how my life has been affected due to socialization by my gender, race, religion and social class. I will also relate my personal experience to sociological research. As a child my life was very difficult. I was born to a young African American mother and a Trinidadian father in the heart of Brooklyn New York. My parents were only together for a short period of time before they separated due to my mother’s heavy drinking and drug use. I never experienced the traditional family that Cootzn (1997) spoke of. Even though my mother was part of my primary social group I didn’t learn many positive things from her. My mother wasn’t a bad person, but the circumstances of her environment turn her into a woman I strive my entire life not to be. Throughout my childhood, my mother tried to teach me her values for how a woman should behave. She would tell me that it’s a man’s job to take care of a woman, and all I needed to do was learn how to cook and clean. It was a concept that could...

...English 123 II – 2.2 Final Project Milestone One: Annotation Bibliography By Vincent Berry WHAT IS YOUR RESEARCH QUESTION? Are record labels racism and political in the music industry? What impact does racism and politics have on the artist and fan base? SUMMORIZE SOURCE INFORMATION FOR EACH ANNOTATION Suisman, David. "Co Workers in the Kingdom of Culture: Black Swan Records and the Political Economy of African American Music." Teaching the Journal of American History Vol. 90, No. 4.March 2004 (2004): 1295-1324. Web. 1 Mar. 2004. African American owned Record Company, which produced records for African American consumers, was faced with attempts by a large record corporation to force them into bankruptcy. Why would a large company do this for such a small African American owned company? How would it merit attention from African American people in this medium when you have more important subjects like voting rights and lynching? Moreover, why would it merit any attention at all, not to mention, selling records to black consumers. This article answers these questions and investigates the rise and fall of the small record company and explores the political economy in which it operated. Black Swan Records created by Henry H. Pace, who saw a way to respond to a hostile environment that African American people faced with, both in the entertainment industry and in American society. The protégé of W.E.B Du Bois, also saw that African Americans were not equally even when they...

...Portraits do not exist to simply show what a person looks like, portraits are meant to strip people their essence and convey the embodiment of a person, “Portraits should provide us with authentic insights into individual personalities and this means much more than simply recording physical impressions…the task of the portrait artist is no so much to produce a likeness as to capture the “reality” of a person”, (Neville Drury, 1992). A painted portrait possesses a life of its own that stems from deep within the painters’ soul and shows the raw soul of the sitter; portraits should allow you to see who the person truly is, its an embodiment. Vincent van Gogh’s 1889 conveys the essence of who van Gogh was, his state of mind and mood through visual...

...A portrait is a painting that shows and focuses on one or two people that often shows many things about who they are. Portraiture is a very interesting type of artwork because you can often make many observations from the little details in the painting that represent who the person is. From these small details, we can infer information about someone who lived hundreds of years ago. The piece that I am analyzing is a double portrait by Jan van Eyck called Giovanni Arnolfini and his Wife that was painted in the year 1434. This piece is oil on wood panel and can be found on page 562 in the textbook. I chose this piece because I feel that there are a lot of different details that are available to analyze and that this piece really represented many of the key aspects of 15th century art in Northern Europe. Van Eyck was extremely detailed and incorporated a lot of symbolism in the portrait that helps to be able to identify who the people in the painting are....

...English 11: Philosophy It’s All About You The Self-Portrait The Assignment: To create a mixed media self-portrait through which you reveal a “secret of your soul” -- an element of your identity such as a passion, a belief, a characteristic, or a value that you hold close to your “core” [or, in other words, that you believe plays a significant role in defining your true self]. Why a Self Portrait? A self-portrait allows you to see your beauty, understand your shadows, and express your feelings and reflections. It is a powerful tool that can help you to understand yourself on a deeper level, ultimately promoting inner peace, change, and personal growth. Where do I Start – and End? Obviously, attempting to understand yourself is a process that necessitates an introspective journey. • Begin by experimenting with some of the warm up techniques that are listed on the back of this page. These techniques should get you thinking in a reflective direction. • Once you have completed some of the warm up activities, log on to Moodle, and review the “It’s All About You” PowerPoint posted there. It contains examples of self–portraits from various professional artists (along with, in many cases, their statements of intent); some instructional tips on art techniques, terms, and materials you might use to create your own work; and sample projects from previous years’ philosophy students . • Draft your ideas, considering both the...

...A “selfie” is a self-portrait photograph, usually captured with a hand-held digital camera or camera phone. Selfies are frequently posted on social networking sites like Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, and Tumblr. They are usually random, and are commonly taken either with a camera held at arm’s length or a monopod, or in a mirror. The term “selfie” was explained by photographer Jim Krause in 2005, despite photos in the selfie type predate the extensive application of the word. Self –taken pictures were specifically common on MySpace before Facebook became popular online social network in the beginning of the year 2000. Nevertheless, writer Kate Losse depicts that between 2006 and 2009 (when Facebook became well-known than MySpace) the “MySpace pic” (mainly “an incompetent, flash-blinded self-portrait, regularly taken in front of a bathroom mirror”) became a hint of a bad taste for users of the newer Instagram and Facebook social network. A “self-portrait” is a description of an artist, drawn, painted, photographed, or sculpted by the artist. Even though self-portraits have been built by artists since the earliest times, it is not before the Early Renaissance in the mid-15th century that artists can be commonly recognized representing themselves as either the primary subject...

...artists in Minnesota. This particular exhibition held at MCAD showcases the works of five recipients of the $10,000.00 grant. These emerging artists are Susannah Bielak, Amanda Hankerson, Michael Hoyt, Melissa Loop and Lauren Roche. The exhibition includes video, drawings, and performed work by Bielak. Photographs by Hankerson, including a mobile drawing unit designed by Hoyt, mysterious landscapes by loop, and captivating abstracted portraits by Roche. The 2012/13 winners of the grant seem to have had a clear focus in terms of what they wanted to display and composed their pieces in a fascinating manner. The pieces are very diverse when it comes content as well as media; I would defiantly say that these are defiantly artists to look out for in the near future. The works that I feel are most representative of this show come from the landscape and portrait paintings composed by Melissa Loop and Lauren Roche. Both painters are considered traditional with their choice medium being oil on canvas. Loop has more of an affinity for painting portraits of amazon like landscapes. She acknowledges her former Hudson River school as being a source of inspiration for her works. Her reliefs inspire one to not only look at the serenity and beauty of the exotic landscapes, but also to realize that these lush lands may have inhabitants. She try’s to capture in her paintings, the inhabitants perspective in the form of the inhabitants looking at the viewer. Her trips to Mexico and Belize inspired...

...The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock With time poems may have lost their voice, but not their importance. Up to this day, poetry is still one of the greatest forms of artistic expression; Poems speak to emotions and capture feelings. There is no right format of a poem, but yet a world of possibilities. Instead being unchangeable poems are innately open to interpretation, they should be spoken out loud in order to be “heard”, convey truth and cause impact. The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock by T.S. Eliot is an extremely meaningful poem; it is one of Elliot’s best-known works and without a doubt a masterpiece (Hillis). T.S. Eliot introduces the poem with a quote from Dante's Inferno (XXVII.61-66), and with that sparks our curiosity. He then makes statements and questions that perhaps everyone has done, or will do at some point in life. The poem is a legitimate work of the modernist movement, the language used is contemporary; the verses are free and the rhythm flows naturally. All of the elements in the poem are in harmony and work together in order to set the tone making up a unique poetic style. “Let us go then, you and I, when the evening is spread out against the sky”. From its first lines, the poem is able to catch the reader’s attention by using very strong imagery. Eliot’s following verse says, “ Like patient etherized upon a table”. The reader is both amazed but also “shocked” by the author with the...

...learned so much about painting and sculptures that have never seen before. I think that the sculptures were more detailed and more presentable than the painting, but all the paintings were still good too. One of the first things that caught my eye when I first enter was a big man statue standing, and it was about 8 feet tall by an American artist named Gaston Lachaise and it was one of the biggest art craft in the museum that I saw. Another one was the best of the savior by Gianlorienzo Bermini and was made in Italy. The paintings were colorful, but some of the paintings in the museum that I didn’t like such as the zinc yellow by Franz Kline (American artist). It was white and yellow stroke but I thought that the style was poor. The portrait of Miles Sherbrook by American artist John Singleton Copley was the other painting. It shows Miles Sherbrook and his business and it looks reality to me. One of the arts that I really liked was the Wounded Indian, by Peter Stephenson. I liked it because of how its artwork and it was very well created. Saint John the Baptist was another one and it was made of wood and it seems very powerful and how it was presenting. The last one that I experienced was Ariedne which was created by Chavey Bradley. There were a lot of things to look at and learned from it but time is not enough. It was a really great experienced and I really enjoyed...

...All of us have some ambition or the other in life. Such a man has naturally a purpose in life and is always enthusiastic and makes sustained efforts to realise his ambition. He strives hard till he attains what he wishes. Nothing can deter him from the path he treads. But Ambition should be within one's reach. There is no fun for crying for the moon. My ambition is to be a great painter. My teachers have always appreciated my paintings and encouraged me to paint. I have painted various subjects varying from nature to portraits. My paintings have always found a place in our school exhibitions. My imagination is sharp and sense of colours good. This and my vivid imagination have made me a good painter. I have been practicing painting for a long time now and I realize that the more I paint, the better I get it. I know that I can bring a lot of joy to the people who view my paintings. I wish to have my paintings exhibited at various exhibitions and art galleries abroad. A painter creates an imaginary world for himself. I too can create such a world where I can feel comfortable and happy. It is my escape from the mundane reality that I face everyday. It will greatly satisfy my aesthetic sensibility to continue to paint. I hope to evolve my own style of paintings and set an example for the coming generations of painters. As a painter I can express my feelings on the canvas. I can project my sensibility about certain subjects I paint. I want to be a painter with a difference. My...

...poem; he used the word “portrait” eight times. This allowed the reader to develop his own thoughts and ideas of what the poem could be about. In this analysis Ashberry’s poem was created on the basics of derivative art; he portrays a situation where the artist’s creativity conflicted with the demands of the people (meaning the people from the “buildings”). They said to “try using the brush/as a means to an end. Select, for a portrait,/Something less angry and large, and more subject/to a painter’s moods, or perhaps, to a prayer (Lines 9-12).” In the poem, the author presents the struggle for the artist who wants to present the sea instead of just painting it. The author seemingly lionizes the painter’s struggle in finding the most creative and artistic way to display the sea. Quoting “nature, not art, might usurp the canvas (Line 14).” Summing up the poem, ultimately the author displays that the struggle would clash with what the community wanted. Art is a display of one’s self but viewed by that of the public. Interpreting this poem was very complicated. Summarizing the events of the poem, the author first identifies the painter, the buildings and the sea (as if they connect or have some time of relation). Then the painter positions himself between the symbolic pieces: the buildings and the sea. This sort of sets the tone and the assumption of the artist being torn between the two. The artist’s intention was to creatively produce an imitative portrait of the nature of the sea;...

...Haylie Jefferson Extra Credit Art Appreciation February 10, 2016 Mona Lisa is Missing August 11, 1911 was a dramatic day for Paris. One of the most famous paintiin the world, the Mona Lisa, was stolen from Louvre Museum. The man who stole the painting was named Vincenzo Peruggia. This is a large crime and no one would ever think that Peruggia would be able to do something like this. He is a small, uneducated, working man. Joe Medeiros, the director and writer of this film is trying to figure out exactly how this happened. Joe travels across the country to meet Peruggia’s daughter, Cheltiza to get some unanswered questions. After talking with her, he quickly finds out that she never even knew her father. Peruggia died on October 8, 1945 which is his birthday as well and his body was buried in France. She was very young when he passed away and her mother remarried her dead husbands brother. They hid the fact that her father was a theft for 18 years and never told her about anything. She only knew small things about the theft that she had heard. She says that the reason her father did it was for patriotism from his country and wanted to get revenge on his co-workers that would make fun of him and call him “macaroni” because he was from Italy and that’s all she really knew about him. Peruggia stole the Mona Lisa on August 11, 1911. He stole the painting in for two whole years. He got into the museum with his old work because they were cleaning the pictures glass. At the time he...

...Rome. From this came the discovery of new technologies, new continents through exploration, and the emergence of the arts of philosophy, literature, and art. From this time came some of the most world renowned pieces of art, many of which are still on display today, with two such pieces being “The Arnolfini Portrait” by Jan Van Eyck and “Giorgione” by Giorgio da Castelfranco. Renaissance Art From roughly 1400 to 1600 Europe experienced a rediscovery of ancient Greek and Roman culture and with this rediscovery came wealth, both in the monetary fashion and in the art sense. With increasing trade, the discovery of new continents, and new inventions such as the printing press, there was also an increase in the arts. This increase brought about some of the most well known literature, philosophy, and art that is still studied and admired today. Although there are more well known names in the field of art such as DaVinci and Michelangelo there were many more that still have their art on display today such as Jan Van Eyck and Giorgio da Castelfranco. Giorgio da Castelfranco created a painted entitled “Judith” in the year 1504 and is one of many portraits that depicts the scene of Judith of Holofernes from the Biblical legend of Judith. The tale states that the widow Judith makes herself appealing to an army general, Holofernes, and in the end beheads him with his own sword while he lies inebriated in his bed. With the death of their leader, the Assyrians are...
