...Movie Review: Equilibrium 1 Movie Review: Equilibrium The movie Equilibrium is an excellent movie to relate to our Introduction to Sociology class. Equilibrium follows the life of John Preston, an elite member of a military team used to locate and destroy all things considered “sensory stimulating”. In this society all citizens are forced to take drugs that suppress all feeling and emotion. The reason for this is the leader “father” of this society believes emotion is the cause of all conflicts such as crime and war. Anyone not taking the drug is considered a “sense offender” and is killed on the spot. John Preston is a firm believer in his government and its cause, until he misses a dose of his drugs. After realizing how wonderful emotion can be, he seeks out the “Underground”, a large hidden society of “sense offenders”, and eventually becomes the one to lead the revolution against the government. I think that this movie is a great example to relate to our Introduction to Sociology class because it incorporates key ideas such as culture, society, norms, deviance, and group conformity. The film follows several children on their quest to get accepted by different schools because if they continue down the path of public school they will fall behind and are far more likely to drop out. Problems in Education: One major problem that the film addresses quite thoroughly is the problem with school funding. Schools receive money from the state, and they are also funded by tax money from citizens who live in the communities. Typically in a neighborhood where the average home price is relatively high the school will often receive and spend more money per student than a school in a poor community. A school in a rich neighborhood will more often than not have newer and higher quality learning materials than a school in a low income community. This difference in income has a huge impact on the education students receive. For example, a “school in a poor neighborhood may be rundown, lack library and science facilities, have crowded classrooms, and be staffed with poorly trained teachers” (Macionis 350). Gender bias in children’s literature perpetuates this glass ceiling. Children’s books are dominated by male central characters from the Cat in the Hat to Babar, and from Peter Pan to Peter Rabbit. New research has found this causes a gender disparity sending children a message that “women and girls occupy a less important role in society than men or boys.” (“Gender in 20th Century” p. 2) In almost 6,000 children’s books published between 1900 and 2000, the study, led by Florida State University sociology professor Janice McCabe, found males are central characters in 57% of children’s books published each year, with only 31% having female central characters. Male animals are central characters in 23% of books per year, while female animals are central in only 7.5%. The Caldecott Award, given to the top children’s book each year, has had only one standalone female character since the award was established in 1938. The study also found books with male animals were more than two-and-a-half times more common. Starring as Mookie in his award-winning movie, Lee portrays a pizza delivery man trying to support his girlfriend and son. The pizzeria has been run for twenty-five years by an Italian-American named Sal, who has an older son named Pino who is incredibly racist towards African Americans. Pino and his brother Vito are suffering a rocky relationship due to Vito’s friendly demeanor towards Mookie, which Pino practically views as a crime. These separate racial groups set the discriminatory tone for Lee’s disturbing yet inspiring hit film. This intense drama captured racism in urban America using simple characters that were able to portray a huge amount of meaning and values. Tensions begin to rise on a hot summer day between Buggin’ out, Mookie’s close friend, and Sal at his pizzeria. Buggin’ Out takes it upon himself to directly ask Sal about the lack of black celebrities on his “Wall of Fame,” to which Sal states that he does not need to feature anyone who is not Italian in his restaurant.
