Why the Soda Ban is Beneficial
“We’re not taking away anybody’s right to do things, we’re simply forcing you to understand that you have to make the conscious decision to go from one cup to another cup.” This quote is from the Mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg, after putting into into legislation a ban of the sale of sugary drinks that are greater than sixteen ounces from restaurants, movie theaters, food stands and other sellers of that sort. The idea of the ban is simple, if people have smaller portions they won’t consume as much and therefore will cut down on obesity. Some people may say this ban is going to be as useful as a lame horse, although it is clear that this ban and bans of this nature are going to impact obesity for the …show more content…
There is no doubt that the amount of soda that is becoming regular to consume in America and the rising obesity rates in America are closely related. According to researchers from Harvard, Americans consume more than 200 calories a day from sugary drinks alone, which is four times more than in 1965. They also claim that rising evidence shows that drinking sugary drinks increases the chances of getting heart disease, and is closely linked with diabetes and obesity. Some people might claim that while both the consumption of sugary drinks and obesity rates have both risen significantly there is no correlation between them, and therefore the sugary drink ban isn’t going to help. In reality this couldn’t be further from the truth. A study from the Center for Science in the Public Interest claims that more than seven percent of an American’s calories for the day come from sugary drinks. An additional study from the University of North Carolina with more than 10,000 children showed that the kids who consumed them had higher caloric intake and also that the kids who we’re drinking these sodas were also eating more unhealthy foods than normal. A poster made by Mike Bloomberg’s campaign supports this as well stating that a child’s odds of becoming obese increase by sixty percent with each sugary drink that they take in a day. This poster also claims that American’s consume 200 to 300 more calories a day than they did thirty years ago mostly due to sugary
