...Ellen Williams History of the Soda Fountain 05/10/12 I chose to write about the history of the soda fountain and its correlation to the early pharmacy as it holds personal nostalgia. I grew up in a small, historical town; the birthplace of woman’s rights, in upstate New York called Seneca Falls. It was also home to one of my favorite lunch stops and pharmacy, Crayton Drugs. It’s no longer there today however about 25 years ago if you walked in and made your way past the pharmacy through the back was the deli and soda fountain. It was beautiful with marble countertop and red leather stools. They had the town’s best grilled cheese and creamiest milk shakes which I would enjoy while my mother was getting her prescriptions filled. It was a rare special treat. My mouth is watering as I reminisce about the trips there. I guess I have to thank Jacob Baur, the inventor of the soda fountain. I can see the “allure” and “intoxication” of the soda fountain experience so I could only imagine if there were addictive substances being added in the soft drinks!! Almost every individual consumes this type of drink thinking that it quenches their thirst because of its unique taste. But little do they know that this beverage subtly destroys them. The production and consumption of carbonated drinks should be minimized because it can lead to health problems or in worst case, death. Soft drinks are extremely acidic which may lead to certain health disorders. These sodas contain phosphoric and carbonic acids, two substances that can corrode almost anything when ingested in pure amounts. Phosphoric acid is diluted to become nontoxic and is usually mixed with carbonated drinks to give its characteristic sour taste. Scientific studies reveal that elevated levels of phosphates eliminate essential vitamins and minerals from the body, leading to an abnormality when life processes (digestion, respiration, etc) are carried out.
