Hanging out/Soldering
Soldering as it is referred to by Americans and hanging out by the British is the greatest evil commonly faced universally in industrial establishment. Soldering which simply means under working, is the tactics used by workers whereby they deliberately work at a slow pace so they can avoid a full days’ work load. Soldering has a strong and direct effect on the wages, prosperity and life of every worker and consequentially affects the prosperity of the business organization at large. The elimination of soldering in most business organizations would lead to the solution of a whole lot of problems both for the organization and the nation at large. These problems that are most likely to be resolved are idle time, unemployment and poverty.
The highest level of prosperity in an organization can only be achieved if every worker determines to put in his or her maximum efforts/abilities into each day’s work load. This is rather not the case in most of today’s organization. Workers work below their ability and are most times very inefficient. The reason for this condition have been summarized into three (3) points
• Workers believe that a material increase in the output of each worker or each machine in the production process will in the end lead to displacing a large number of workers out of work because a few workers can do the job. Workers so much believe in this fallacy that if they put in their efforts and achieve a day’s work then organizations would see no need for a large number of workers and will in the end throw a lot of them out of work. But these workers do not understand that if they put in their best in achieving a days’ work, they would be able increase productivity and increase in productivity leads to a reduction in production cost and instead of displacing men out of work they in the end employ more workers because reduction in

Soldering Hazards

...Soldering Air Quality Hazards and Solutions William G. Nicholson U.S. Air Force Abstract Air quality has become questionable with recent increased production and soldering procedures conducted by the Avionics Intermediate Systems Shop at Charleston Air Force Base. With an unknown quality level of air within the soldering area there is a need for a sample to be taken and options to be considered to improve the working environment. Even though the air sample may reveal that levels are under threshold levels, the simple fact that employees are uncomfortable doing the task may warrant solutions as if the sample was above limits. Those changes would not be required by anyone outside of the Air Force, but would be considered based on employee well-being. This research paper will reveal the findings of the air quality sample, the methods of testing, and countermeasures intent on improving air quality. Most research has concluded that the soldering flux is the real contaminate and that the lead based solder does not become airborne during the process; which is exciting in the fact that expanded measures are not needed to account for lead. There are many solutions available to correct the air quality and this paper will assess the most applicable and cost effective. Keywords: soldering, flux, rosin-core, air quality, ventilation Soldering Air Quality Hazards and Solutions The current set-up for soldering avionics component parts has questionable ventilation to account...

Alloy

...[pic] • What is an alloy? An alloy is a mixture or metallic solid solution composed of two or more elements. Complete solid solution alloys give single solid phase microstructure, while partial solutions give two or more phases that may or may not be homogeneous in distribution, depending on thermal (heat treatment) history. Alloys usually have different properties from those of the component elements. Alloy constituents are usually measured by mass. Alloys are usually classified as substitutional or interstitial alloys, depending on the atomic arrangement that forms the alloy. They can be further classified as homogeneous, consisting of a single phase, heterogeneous, consisting of two or more phases, or intermetallic, where there is no distinct boundary between phases Examples: • Bronze (tin, aluminium or other element) • Aluminium bronze (aluminium) • Arsenical bronze • Florentine bronze (aluminium or tin) • Gunmetal (tin, zinc) • Glucydur • Phosphor bronze (tin and phosphorus) • Ormolu (Gilt Bronze) (zinc) • Speculum metal (tin) [pic] 1. ...Step 1: Materials Tools * Arduino * Processing * Wire cutters * Soldering iron * Box cutter Materials * (3) 270k resistors * (3) 10k resistors * Solder * Wire * Aluminum foil * Cardboard Optional: * Tape (e.g.: scotch) * Shielded wire (e.g.: coaxial cable, ~3') * (3) alligator clips * 3-pin header * Zip-tie * Shrink wrap tubing or hot glue Step 2: Make the Plates This sensor will work using simple RC circuits, with each circuit sensing distance in one dimension. I found that the easiest way to arrange three capacitive plates for this purpose is in the corner of a cube. I cut the corner of a cardboard box into an 8.5" cube, and then cut some aluminum foil to fit as slightly smaller squares. Tape on the corners keeps them in place. Don't tape down the entire perimeter, we'll need it later for attaching the alligator clips. Step 3: Make the Connectors To connect the Arduino to the plates we need some shielded wire. If the wire isn't shielded, the wires themselves act more obviously as part of the capacitor. Also, I've found that alligator clips make it really easy to connect things to aluminum -- but there are probably plenty of other ways, too. * Cut three equal lengths of shielded cable. I chose about 12". The shorter the better. Coaxial cable works, but the lighter/more flexible the better. * Strip the last half inch or so to reveal the shielding, and the last quarter inch to reveal...

Manufacturing Process Gold Chain

...Platinum Chain Making Tino Volpe • TIFFANY & CO. History The definition of chain is as simple as interlocking links of metal. If the metal happens to be precious metal, then we consider the chain jewelry. In preparing for this paper, I began my research with the understanding that finding information on chain making, especially historical information, would be a fairly simple task. However, after looking through old copies of jewelry history books, surfing the internet, and interviewing people with a long history in the industry, I arrived at the conclusion that the history of chain making is either a well kept secret or just not of much interest to anyone. Precious metal chain for jewelry has been around for a long time. Basically when man first began working extensively with gold back in Neolithic times he found that certain metals, most notably pure gold, were extremely ductile and could be hammered and stretched to a great degree. With the invention of wire, man could now take something rigid like metal and turn it into something flexible like chain. Chain making has always been, up until the middle of the 18th century, a labor-intensive time consuming hand operation. It was a well-versed art and most books on jewelry will demonstrate basic techniques on making chain by hand. Before automated wire drawing machines, the craftsman had to hammer down and pull metal through succeeding smaller dies to form thin wire. Once the wire was pulled down to the needed diameter...

Lpg Gas Detector Using Gsm Module

...CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION LPG consists of mixture of propane and butane which is highly flammable chemical. It is odourless gas due to which Ethanethiol is added as powerful odorant, so that leakage can be easily detected. We can detect the presence of dangerous LPG leakage in the cars, industrial sectors and residential premises using an Ideal Gas Sensor. We can easily integrate the LPG gas leakage detector unit into a unit that can sound an alarm or give a visual suggestion of the LPG concentration. The sensor used in this Project will have both admirable sensitivity and rapid response time. This sensor can also be used to sense other gases like iso-butane, propane, LNG and even cigarette smoke. The output of the sensor goes LOW as soon as the LPG sensor senses any gas leakage. This is detected by the microcontroller and the LED & buzzer are turned ON. After a delay of few milliseconds, the exhaust fan is also turned ON for throwing the gas out and a “GAS LEAKAGE” message is sent to a pre-defined mobile number using GSM Module. MQ-5 Semiconductor Sensor for Combustible Gas Sensitive material of MQ-5 gas sensor is SnO2, which with lower conductivity in clean air. When the target combustible gas exist, the sensors conductivity is Higher along with the gas concentration rising. We use simple electro-circuit, convert change of conductivity to correspond output signal of gas concentration. MQ-5 gas sensor has high sensitivity...

The airborne concentration of any substance or mixture that is hazardous to health must be kept as low as reasonably practicable to minimise the risk to health, regardless of whether there is an exposure standard. Surveillance

...Build Your Own Micro RC Surveillance Robot HOW DO YOU BUILD YOUR OWN MICRO RC SURVEILLANCE ROBOT? Why don't I show you how?   Almost every roboticist has wanted to create a small Surveillance Robot at some point in their time. The biggest problem being the Receiver/Transmitter pairs are always too expensive. My solution: Extract the RC receiver from a small RC car and modify it for our purposes. By the end of this tutorial, you will create and modify an RC robot to do: 1. Direct Radio Control using the remote's joysticks. 2. Computer control via a microcontroller connected to the remote.   Later, I plan on making this base teleoperational. When I do, I'll be sure to document it and continue the tutorial for it!!!!!!!!!!    It will used the receiver from a $10 ZipZaps RC car purchased at a RadioShack (US) or a Microz GT car purchased at The Source (Canada). Any inexpensive RC car, though, will do. It will also use a wireless camera and 2 Solarbotics gear motors.  The main goal of this robot always remains the same; to be able to perform surveillance that you could watch on your television or on your computer (this depends on the camera used). I broke this tutorial into steps for simplicity and organization of categories (why should you put the construction of chassis with building the electronics? :P) Now for some general examples of the design for the robot (you don't have to follow my example exactly). The image at the top of the page shows an angled view of...

...requirements of the design brief. For my year 12 electronics major assignment I was set the task to design and make a low voltage regulator, the constraints of the task was that it needed to fit into a commercial manufactured housing that is 120mm x 65mm x 40 mm, Soldering must be used , Soldering iron will be used, Must work reliably and must be to a High quality soldering standard. I felt I had completed all these task to a high standard and had meet all the requirements needed of that of the design brief. I was set out to achieve a working low volatge regulator that would notify the vehicle driver if the battery is discharging and becoming flat. I felt that I have completed the requirements to a high standard. The evidence that I have to support my claims are that I had taken pictures regularly and also when testing the regulator the lights would turn on once the multimeter read 12 volts. The final product didnt come easy as I had some trouble when making the low voltage regulator when I first tried to test my regulator to see if it worked none of the lights were going on, this led to do some fault finding task to see where the problem is and try to fix it. Once I had found the problem it was an easy fix and when I tired testing it again it worked perfectly. If I were to make this low voltage regulator differently I would take more time tinning the solder on the PCB board making it smooth and shinny and take more care bending the components legs for a better fit...

Donner Company

...INtroduction The three-year old Donner Company has positioned itself well within both the small volume, customized (contract) printed circuit boards market as well as the large volume, generic (captive) printed circuit boards market. Large electronic firms (AT&T, IBM) produced their components in captive shops, while smaller sized companies, or when large and small quantities of simple technology or fast turn-around prototype boards were required, these requests usually are fulfilled by contract shops. With a company that is managed primarily by engineers, Donner’s core competency was, obviously, its engineering expertise, and it produced specialized circuit boards known as “soldermask over bare copper” (SMOBC) boards. Donner positioned itself to manufacture these boards to small and large electronic firms and management envisioned it as one of the industry leaders. With 750 competitors in the US alone, and a market that is volatile, Donner’s ability to anticipate and resolve design problems and prototype techniques enabled it to maintain its competitive edge. However, this competitive edge has been compromised by poor on-time delivery and high rate of product return, in addition to planning and manufacturing problems that caused bottlenecks, shifting bottlenecks and improper utilization of labor. These problems began to hamper the overall performance of the firm, and management started evaluating the company’s position and different strategic policies. 1....
