Entry 1- Judgment and Retribution The guests of Soldier Island are all guilty of unpunished crimes, but when a recorded message accuses them of their wrongdoings and people start getting murdered, fear of judgment and retribution becomes prevalent. After the guests were treated to a satisfying dinner, a voice announces, “Ladies and Gentlemen! Silence Please!...You are charged with the following indictments:”(38), and proceeds to call each guest by name and state the crime for which each are responsible. Following the murder of the first three guests and the realization that these passings are not coincidental, they understand that for every two lines of the Ten Little Soldier Boys rhyme, one person will die. When “five frightened people”(173) …show more content…
After the gramophone discloses his secret, the guilt-ridden Dr. Armstrong has a haunting dream bringing him back to the time when he killed his patient while performing an operation under the influence of alcohol, “[e]asy to do a murder with a knife like that. And of course he was doing a murder...”(73). Emily Brent is writing her notebook when, in almost a trance, she inscribes, “THE MURDERER’S NAME IS BEATRICE TAYLOR...”(143). She then awakes with a clear mind and questions in a low voice, “‘Did I write that?...I must be going mad...’”(143). Vera Claythorne suffers from severe recurrent hallucinations that worsen over time. She remembers the death of Cyril and recalls him saying, “‘Miss Claythorne, why can’t I swim to the rocks?’”(72), and although she receives reassurances that “‘Miss Claythorne was wonderful-kept her head-started off swimming after Cyril at once’”(157), she knows the truth: that she allowed him to drown when she could have saved him. When a strand of seaweed is hung in her dark room, Vera recollects, “The sea...The smell of the sea at St. Tredennick....It was the smell there that had been on the beach that day”(178). When the seaweed “touche[s] her throat”, she hallucinates “a wet hand, smelling of the sea” and “[s]he screamed …show more content…
Nursery rhymes are childlike and innocent; at first, Vera Claythorne does not notice the haunting message behind the rhythmic swing when she recites the rhyme, “Ten little soldier boys went out to dine; One choked himself and then there were nine”(27). As guests of Soldier Island, they each have their own copy of Ten Little Soldier Boys which is framed in each room and at first glance, appears to be an innocent theme. After the second death occurs, Dr. Armstrong and Philip Lombard put forth several possible explanations for Mrs. Rogers’ passing. Through their discussion, the correlation between the rhyme, the deaths and the two missing china figures starts to unravel as Dr. Armstrong

Maritime Power of Chaina

...The Maritime Strategy of China in the Asia-Pacific Region Origins, Development and Impact HUANG, AN-HAO Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy August 2009 School of Social and Political Sciences Faculty of Arts The University of Melbourne Produced on archival quality paper ABSTRACT This thesis aims to examine how and why a continental-oriented China has shifted its maritime strategic orientation and naval force structure from its coast toward the far seas in an era of interdependent international system. Generally, China is an ancient continental land power with an incomplete oceanic awareness. With the transformation after the Cold War of China’s grand strategy from landward security to seaward security, maritime security interests have gradually become the most essential part of China’s strategic rationale. Undoubtedly, the quest for sea power and sea rights has become Beijing’s main maritime strategic issue. Given China’s escalating maritime politico-economic-military leverage in the Asia-Pacific region, its desire to become a leading sea power embodying global strategic thinking means that it must expand its maritime strategy by developing its navy and preparing for armed confrontation in terms of international relations realism. Conversely, Beijing’s maritime policy leads at the same time towards globalization, which involves multilateralism and strategic coexistence of a more pragmatic kind. This research...

...IGOROTS * Home * IGOROT SONGS * IGOROT DANCE * IGOROT TRADITIONS * MONEY ON THE MOUNTAIN IGOROT TRADITIONS IGOROT TRADITIONS When we talk about Igorot identity and culture, we also have to consider the time. My point is that: what I am going to share in this article concerning the Igorot culture might not be the same practiced by the Igorots of today. It has made variations by the passing of time, which is also normally happening to many other cultures, but the main core of respect and reverence to ancestors and to those who had just passed is still there. The Igorot culture that I like to share is about our practices and beliefs during the "time of Death". Death is part of the cycle of life. Igorots practice this part of life cycle with a great meaning and importance. Before the advent of Christianity in the Igorotlandia, the Igorots or the people of the Cordilleran region in the Philippines were animist or pagans. Our reverence or the importance of giving honor to our ancestors is a part of our daily activities. We consider our ancestors still to be with us, only that they exist in another world or dimension. Whenever we have some special feasts (e.g., occasions during death, wedding, family gathering, etc.), when we undertake something special (like going somewhere to look for a job or during thanksgiving), we perform some special offer. We call this "Menpalti/ Menkanyaw", an act of butchering and offering animals. During these times we call them...

PREFACE Rationale We agreed to produce the instructor’s manual for the sixth edition of A First Look at Communication Theory because it’s a first-rate book and because we enjoy talking and writing about pedagogy. Yet when we recall the discussions we’ve had with colleagues about instructor’s manuals over the years, two unnerving comments stick with us: “I don’t find them much help”; and (even worse) “I never look at them.” And, if the truth be told, we were often the people making such points! With these statements in mind, we have done some serious soul-searching about the texts that so many teachers—ourselves...

...Social Change and Modernity Edited By Hans Haferkamp and Neil J. Smelser UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA PRESS Berkeley Los Angeles Oxford © 1992 The Regents of the University of California INTRODUCTION Hans Haferkamp and Neil J. Smelser Haferkamp is grateful to Angelika Schade for her fruitful comments and her helpful assistance in editing this volume and to Geoff Hunter for translating the first German version of parts of the Introduction; Smelser has profited from the research assistance and critical analyses given by Joppke. 1. Social Change and Modernity Those who organized the conference on which this volume is based—including the editors— decided to use the terms "social change" and "modernity" as the organizing concepts for this project. Because these terms enjoy wide usage in contemporary sociology and are general and inclusive, they seem preferable to more specific terms such as "evolution" "progress," "differentiation," or even "development," many of which evoke more specific mechanisms, processes, and directions of change. Likewise, we have excluded historically specific terms such as "late capitalism" and "industrial society" even though these concepts figure prominently in many of the contributions to this volume. The conference strategy called for a general statement of a metaframework for the study of social change within which a variety of more specific theories could be identified. 2. Theories of Social Change Change is such an evident feature of...
