Solomon’s Temple was one of the wonders of Ancient Jerusalem, the capital of Israel. It was one hundred and twenty cubits tall, and it was five hundred cubits squared in perimeter. Also, the temple was laid out in an east to west format. During the building of the temple, no hammer or chisel was used, but others were for different purposes. Construction took seven years, being built by Phoenician workers, who were skilled at building. The Temple had three stories of different sections and rooms. Some of these sections, the most significant ones, were the Ulam, the Hekhal, and the Debir. Windows stood high up on the walls, and below them were side rooms and chambers, that were used for storage and private praying. Walls of the middle floor were six cubits thick, so the temple was extremely sturdy. Inside of the main hall were the Ten Lavers, which held forty baths and was supported with holders made of brass. It also had wheels made of bronze, so it was portable. The floor of the main hall was made of fir-wood and had gold linings, but the doorposts and the doors were made of olive wood. Carvings of cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers filled with gold lined the doors. Surrounding the Hekhal were the walls. These walls were made of cedar wood. They also had carvings of cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers filled with gold. Further along in the main hall stood the Brazen Sea. Jews admired this because its significance in their culture. It was five cubits wide and ten cubits deep, being supported by twelve statues of oxen. There were two altars in Solomon’s Temple. The smaller one was the Sea of Bronze, which was used for offering incense, and it was inside of the Ulam. Standing ten cubits tall, the larger altar was for offering burnt offerings, and it was inside the Hekhal. An interesting fact about the larger altar was that a ditch surrounded it, so only priests could sacrifice from it.
