Solutions Paper
As we all know, there are several issues concerning layoffs. Not only does it affect the person being laid off but also the company, since afterwards the company will be short the human capital. It is always difficult as a manager to have to make the tough call to let someone go. One solution that we have come up with is making it easier and less stressful for the manager to break the news to the employee. Our second solution is making sure that the candidates are qualified for the job so turnover can be prevented if at all possible.
When conducting layoffs, the stress that can be placed on managers is reasonably under-appreciated. However, by having to continually end individuals’ employment, leadership can be exposed to high levels of anxiety. There are numerous ways to mitigate this stress, starting with extending an offer to provide a good reference for the individual (Wall Street Journal, 2015). Assuming the person is being laid off for reasons other than discipline or substandard performance, offering to help him or her obtain future employment can de-stress the employee and the manager. Additionally, managers must ensure they fire people in person and in a quiet area. This can provide a chance for the individual to ask questions and get any assistance that is requested or necessary, and gives the manager the opportunity to assuage any fears the former employee may have.
With a lot of layoffs, the company has to spend money and time for the replacement employee and the unemployment that the ex-employee may claim. There should be a program to help struggling employees train in a company that needs help or find a place for the employee wherein he or she would thrive. Another solution could be the company have a list of programs that have training for the employees
