Homeless and Abandoned Everyone at some point has gone without at something in their lives. For some, it may be as simple as going without a cell phone or cable television. However, some people go without a place to call home. “In January 2014, 578,424 people were homeless on a given night. Most were staying in residential programs for homeless people, and the rest were found in unsheltered locations” (Henry, Cortes and Shivji). American author John Grisham wrote “Somewhere for Everyone” a story that depicts that homelessness is more of an inconvenience rather than exploring the underlying issue on how to eradicate the subject on hand. This happens when they start missing work, run out of paid time off and eventually are fired. Losing employment due to an illness or injury can lead to losing workplace benefits, such as insurance. With the lack of income coupled with the loss of insurance benefits, a person is quickly overwhelmed financially leading them to lose their housing, forcing the family on the street. After being forced to live in the streets, it becomes difficult to recover from the initial illness or injury and it can create new problems causing a domino effect making it impossible for one to recover fully. However, the loss of a job is not why families continue to live on the street. According to the National Coalition for the Homeless, 44 percent of the homeless have a job. “More than four decades ago in 1967, a year round worker earning the minimum wage was paid enough to raise a family of three above the poverty line” (Employment and Homelessness). However, since then minimum wage has not increased enough to cover inflation. “In today’s current market, a full-time minimum wage worker working 40 hours a week and 52 weeks per year would earn $13,624, nearly 25 percent below poverty level” (Employment and …show more content…
Both articles outlined the issues, outlined problems and showed ways to incorporate a change related to each issue. “It is every parent’s responsibility to remember when we look at the joy and privilege in our own children future, there are many, many children everywhere around us who have no one looking out for them. It is all of our responsibility to guarantee that every child has hope attached to their dreams” (Moulene). Prevention and education techniques will aid in both problems allowing for more stable home environments. Many people are left in limbo and forgotten each and every day, if more people step in to assist the homeless and abandoned children a more permanent solution can be met. Mother Teresa addressed it perfectly when she said “We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless.
