...Composition ENG 300 June 19, 2013 Music and Lyrics: Ruben Blades (Looking For America) I’m searching for you, America and fear that I will not find you your footprint has been lost in the dark. (Line 4) I’m calling you America but you are not answering me. You have been made to vanish by those who deny truth.(Line 8) Surrounded by shadows we deny all that’s true until there is justice we will never have peace.(Line 12) Living under Dictatorships I search for you and I cannot find you. Your body tortured is nowhere to be found. (Line 16) If one’s dream is everybody’s dream to break the chains and begin our journey Let’s be confident Let’s go ahead, my race, Let’s preserve time for those to come.(Line 24) You’ve been abducted, America Your mouth has been gagged and today it’s our turn to bring you freedom. I’m calling you America our future awaits us and before it dies on us we will find you.(Line 33) I’m searching for you America. I’m calling you America Oh, Oh Fighting for our race and our freedom And we will find you among the darkness, You’ve been vanished by those who’re afraid of your truth. Example | Although too little sleep is an effect of stress, too little sleep can cause stress. | | a. Although too little sleep is an effect of stress | | b. too little sleep can cause stress | | | Explanation | The answer is b. The most important thought the author wants readers to understand is that too little sleep can cause stress. The dependent clause, which is introduced by although, tells readers information the author considers less important, that too little sleep is an effect of stress (that is, people who are stressed may not sleep well). Notice that if you read the dependent clause aloud to someone and stopped there, the listener would expect you to add something more. The dependent clause does not make complete sense by itself. | | | | 1 | | Although we know the benefits of exercise, most of us don't know that a brisk after-dinner stroll can help with digestion. | | | A) | Although we know the benefits of exercise | | | B) | most of us don't know that a brisk after-dinner stroll can help with digestion | | | | | | | | 2 | | People need to be able to share their fears, frustrations, and joys, so it's important for us to develop a network of people we can share our feelings with. | | | A) | People need to be able to share their fears...

...Lyric Censorship: Language is Power Words create powerful emotions in all of us. They are used to express our feelings, thoughts and ideas, as well as communicate with one another. There are countless examples in history where we see language equating power. Within those examples we see people in the position of power, using this power of language to degrade their enemies and those they consider beneath them, and shape language in their favor. Music ties into language completely. The words of song lyrics convey powerful messages. As language is power, those in control seek to repress the power of this language in music, attempting to keep the power in their favor. But this attempt at censorship only gives those words even more influence and any attempt to infringe our right to free speech should be fought for to prevent its loss. The censorship of lyrics has occurred globally and can be dated back as far as music and poetry can be traced. Let’s take Asia as an example. Under the ruling of the Taliban in Afghanistan, music became a crime (Korpe, 2004). Instruments were burned, and people were severely punished for singing or creating any kind of music that was not deemed acceptable by the government. In Kabal, President Rabbani went as far as to create an Office for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, which was used to regulate the lyric of song in the favor of the government, and punish those who spoke ill towards those in power. In Pakistan...

Children leading others is a very powerful re-inforcer and motivator. 2) Injecting backing tracks into lessons at key points • allows you ‘pick up’ or ‘calm down’ a lesson depending upon the mood. • allows you to overlay any lyrical content that you want to highlight from your lesson. • You can use songs from Sing Up website but you can also simply use the backing tracks of some key songs Example Let’s Dance backing track from Sing Up website Suggest some lyrics to practise to this track from any work you have done today. How would engaging children creatively in the song help them to learn the content of your lessons? How would it affect their attention and involvement? What other ‘support’ might you need to give then to help them come up with some lyrical ideas? How could you build this in to the work you do on a topic so that this support is already there before you play the track? eg: Key word...

...Candice Prestel Historical Foundations DB 2 Dr. Kimberly Roff September 1, 2012 A class of medieval lyric poets, called troubadours, flourished principally in southern France, eastern Spain and northern Italy from the 11th to 13th centuries (Dictionary.com, 2012). They wrote songs and poems of a complex metrical form in langue d’oc, mainly about courtly love. In courtly love the lover sees his ability to resist these temptations and rise above his own base humanity as evidence of his spiritual purity (Syre, 2013). According to Syre (2013), “The smitten knight or nobleman must be willing to perform any deed to win his lady’s favor, the lady often being his lord’s wife”. The trobairitz is the female version of the troubadour but their poems were mainly focused on romantic love (Dictionary.com, 2012). The trobairitz used poetry to share stories of romantic longing and unattainable love, focusing on the feelings associated with romantic love such as longing, suffering, and a desire to do whatever possible to have the feeling of love reciprocated (Career Education Corporation, 2010). The troubadours are said to have “invented” romantic love as we know it today by the conventions and vocabulary that we use to describe it (Syre, 2013). According to Syre (2013), “to love is to suffer, to wander aimlessly, unable to concentrate on anything but the mental image of the beloved, to give up life for a dream”. While reducing women to barely more than objects of male desire...

...Musical Lyrics on the Lives of Graduate Counseling Students Taylor Swift, Ke$ha, Usher, Eminem, or Nicki Minaj these are popular artists or as some would consider them their favorite artist and we all have one. In my study I wanted to find out what people liked more in music the lyrics or the artist, and with that in mind I wanted to narrow my thoughts on to why do people hear certain songs and what does it mean to them? Song lyrics have more importance for some than for others as in the general populous (Buser, Flannery, Bentley & Gladding, 2005, p. 90). I want to know how important are those lyrics and its messages are to the general music hearing population. Buser, Flannery, Bentley & Gladding conducted a study by surveying 28 graduate students in counseling on the meaning of lyrical music in their lives. Their results showed that some songs were more popular or better remembered than others. Their data also showed that while some lyrics are personally meaningful and others conveyed important messages, a number of lyrics are just relaxing, joyful, and entertaining without a deeper level of significance to them. Although their data had its limitations with only surveying 28 graduate students in counseling, and the majority of those being female does limit the study’s findings. It still shows us what few people see in songs and the meaning that the lyrics are trying to convey onto their audience. 1. Does genre determine the depth of lyrics? ...
